I am a Filipino American born and raised in the Philippines and been living here in the USA for over 40 years. What I don't understand is why expats love Dumaguete so much? There are so many islands that offers a simple Philippine lifestyle. cheaper COL, simple women, quiet and peaceful. Dumaguete is the last place I will move to.
You are correct there is nothing special in Duma. What happened is the old geezer expats who got priced out from Cebu drifted down to Duma as Duma is a cheaper version of Cebu. And incessant YT promotion made it "famous" among expats. Another open secret - Duma is a college town lot of college girls looking for side line money.

I enjoyed Chiang Mai in Thailand. Pattaya was fun for a couple days, but it just wears on you. You’re a product there, not a person. All the best, look forward to hearing where you land.
There was an episode of the Andy Griffith Show ( later color tv seasons) where the town clerk, Howard Sprague, decides to retire to a tropical beach and escape the stress of Mayberry. When he excitedly arrives in his Hawaiian shirt, he encounters a bar full of catatonic ex-pats looking emptily into space. Before he becomes a "zombie" himself, he has a dream of being one of the bar ex-pats and awakens to return to Mayberry. I call that separation between expectation and reality, The Howard Sprague Syndrome. I think about this as I consider my own desire to retire in SE Asia.
LOL I think I remember that episode. Well Brent don't drink, but I do think short trips to check out places before you pull the trigger and move permanently is the way to go. Also, having a plan and finding out things to do in the area is very important. Keeping yourself busy will prevent that 'catatonic' state, even if you do drink, like I do. I've seen too many ex-pats crawl into a bar or bottle and never leave.
You can have an experience similar to the Philippines here in the small towns of the USA, or if you want the beach, it has to be along the poor small.towns of the Gulf Coast, living on less than $2,000 per month, you just don't get the opportunity to date 30-year-old women who look like they could be bikini models here in the USA, when you're over age 55 & not rich. The girls you can date here living off of 2,000 per month, often don't have all their teeth
Yes, the Phils can get on your nerves in time. The worst related mistake I ever made was trying to stay the full 59 days one year. After about 5 weeks, I just had it and needed to leave. I now stay the 30 days, but by about day 25, I am ready to return home. About Cambodia, it was great 25 years ago, and its infrastructure since then has improved significantly, but now, the Chinese have an outsized influence on the country. One destination, that used to be great, Sihanoukville (Snooky) now has a Chinese naval installation which has become a flashpoint with Thailand. I would hesitate living in a country dominated by the CCP, especially being an American.
If you get tired of where you're living after 5 months, need to take a break & recharge, it would be unwise to ever buy a property & settle down, unless of course your intention was to rent it out, but then you're tethering yourself to a risky but potentially profitable responsibility
atta boy you got the right idea. slow travel is the best. you sound like me. you know when its time to get up and go. Thai food looks amazing. i cant wait to get over there in November. hopefully we can meet up for a coffee and you can give some ideas for going to some new spots
Brent, while I have been with hundreds of women, I've literally only been in a handful of relationships over the years. Why? Because no matter how much I loved the women I was in relationships with (it's why I was in relationships with them), I always had a need for something different. I'm the same way in all of my life. I love traveling because it brings me new places, new sounds, new smells, new foods & new experiences. Otherwise, I get bored very easily. Sounds like you're suffering from the same "illness." Embrace it, my friend. Not all illnesses are that bad. Lol.
Decision made. Boom, done! Nice one and look forward to your next videos from new, fresh and exciting places! You've now got so much to look forward to! Up in northern Thailand it's cooler and less busy. Personally I'm targeting Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai as somewhere I wanna get to when I retire for the slow pace of life, cheap prices, food, mountains and scenery. Maybe after that I'll to Laos or even to India (if I'm feeling up for some hecticness). The world is our playground and awaits us...
Hi Brent! Keep on keeping on brother! Please keep up with your channel! IMO, you’ll probably end up net positive in viewership. I’ll keep watching! Hua hin isnt bad. Incredible food everywhere Thai and foreign cuisine at 40% of Phil prices. It's slightly hotter than the central visayas. Customer service is excellent and accommodations are excellent!! The beach is bounded by private condos, hotels etc and there isn't a boardwalk which is a shame. Overall it's a good experience. I don't do special massages but there are at least 500 massage parlors here and most sell sex. It's a stain on the culture here in my opinion. Thai generally drive aggressively and fast. That cheapass bottle of Phil water says "spring" of course it's not spring water it's just filtered (allegedly 😅). That's typical in the Philippines there are no health or safety trends that are picked up by the food companies and dishonest advertising is the norm.
If you were here last year it was a lot less crowded than it is this year. Last year had limited Russians and next to no Chinese and now its chock full of them.
I also like Thailand. The problem with Thailand is the short tourist visa if you want to rent a place they want 6 months to a year lease. You can't do that when you have such a short Visa. And to get a longer visa to stay more than a year just too expensive
If you find yourself in Hua Hin (Wa-Hin) look me up, I’ll buy you lunch! Still learning the ropes myself. From Corpus Christi Texas most recently via BGC Manila Bangkok now Hua Hin. I like it here!
Hey Brent, best wishes and safe travels. Can I ask your age? I'm 65 and you're probably younger. But do you have any advice or experience with managing healthcare costs while living abroad? That's my biggest area of uncertainty as I will travel to Asia, likely the Philippines, for the first time in January. I don't have any serious health issues, but an accident or illness could occur at any time. Thanks much, and I hope to catch up with you down the road.
Least you can get a good steak in Thailand, you being a good Oklahoma guy. Where I'm from good steak is king. Going to get yourself one of them a $140 pocket translators.
And the honeymoon is over but the Philippines has a way of growing on you 🤣 Slow travel is the way to go if you can do it . Safe travels Brent waiting for your next one
I give you credit as most of the old vloggers in Dumaguete maybe hit Bohol, Cebu and Siquior occasionally, but usually always home. I would be bored as heck to live like they do, but to each its own, yet somehow they make it sound exciting locked up at home. Love your channel but rambling a bit bro on this,,,, Take it to 15 minutes IMHO
Thanks for sharing you plans and learnings Brent. I'll follow you to Thailand. The Philippines isn't a perfect paradise it's just one of the better ones on earth.
I knew somebody that said if he ever stopped working he would die. Sounds like you're just trying to get used to retirement. Finding a purpose in retiring.
I would stay out of Pattaya city and stay in Jomtien or Pratumnak, Pattaya city is a sh*thole and during high season you will wish you didnt go. Get a cheap quiet place in Jomtien if you want to save some money on a lease otherwise youre going to pay a lot more. Get a place with a gym and a pool (for when you get bored). Drop me a line and Ill give you some decent tips on apartments in Jomtien if you plan to stay a while. Like anywhere else you will get tired of it, but it has more things to do than Hua Hin and Chiang Mai. Hua Hin is good for a few months and the beaches to the south and country are gorgeous, but Hua Hin gets absolutely mobbed now especially on the weekends and you cant always take a walk on the beach because the tide comes in and theres no walkway like there is in Pattaya.
Heh Brent , You know darn well if you start drinking, your Anxiety will be through the roof. You'll screw up your sleep, feel lazy and hungover and not to mention the depression with returning to the booze again. Your on the road to Life Buddy, don't screw that up. Not worth it. It's good visiting different places hope everything goes good in Thailand 🇹🇭 When visiting the Philippines 🇵🇭 again try some place different i have only visited Dumaguete 1 time i didn't find it to be anything special i wouldn't recommend it to anyone who is looking for a serious. relationship. I'll still follow your channel when your in Thailand.
If you’re retired in SE Asia there’s no particular place you need to be. My tip for Thailand would be jump in a “town car” (Camry) at the airport and head to Pattaya as it’s relatively close. Loads of affordable accommodation and great food. Then from there you could map out a more extensive itinerary.
Hey, you are retired! YAOU feel bored? That's great. Travel around my friend until you find what you are looking for. Be clear about what you are looking for and go for it. When it doesn’t work out, move again! Enjoy yourself. Address your health issues as well. Hats off to you.
checkout Cambo man. Bus to Siem Reap, then a bus to Phnom Phen, rent a bike, ride out to Kep. That's gonna be a route the next time i'm over that way :)
I respect you sharing the mundane aspects of your journey instead of portraying a utopia of low cost living and abundance of young hot women looking to fall in love with middle age or elderly men. Although, selling the dream will probably get you more subscribers and views.
I lived on Phuket before moving to the Philippines 15 years ago. It took me a long time to be happy in Cebu tbh, but I find that I travel to Thailand around 2-3 times a year to enjoy some of the qualities that are lacking in the PI. Enjoy your trip mate
I knew you would once you broke up with old girl lol you need a change of scenery, and there's nothing wrong with that. I kinda prefer the PI myself, but I do love to travel. Hua Hin is really nice be sure to download the language app it really does help.
China Bank in the Philippines will give you an account with just a passport. If they say NO, then just go to a different branch and they will give you one. All the other banks in PH are really picky.
Congratulations on 6 years, i celebrated 32 earlier this year. I’m hoping to retire in a few years, by 57. I’m planning some trips to south east Asia in the next couple of years, till then I’ll live vicariously through you. You’re living the dream brother!
I am coming back to the Phils in October sorry I will miss you. I have only been to Phuket. First time I ever paid for a 5 star because it was SO affordable. PLEASE go to Chiang Mai, I want to go there myself. There is a good expat community up there from what I understand. Looking forward to watching!
I’ve been to over 50 countries, enjoyed all of them, probably my favourites are Thailand and Colombia, though you gotta experience as much as you can at your own speed. Now I’m living in Thailand for the last 4 years, I just happened to enjoy my time with a Thai lady who looks after me and we get along real good. Yes Cambodia is ok, though a lot poorer and there are many tricksters including the women, nowhere is perfect! Kampot/Kep is a cool spot. Rent a motorbike and checkout Boker Mountain, it’s beautiful, visit a pepper farm, met some great people, restaurants are excellent. Good luck 😊
Hey Brent, I personally don't think it has anything to do with any country in particular, the boredom will set in after a while in any place after the " honeymoon period " of exploring and the same "type" of relationship you likely find. It's the mindset and lack of purpose that will make you doubt what it is you're actually seeking. Travel, to an extent, is exiting but not a life purpose, so eventually you need to channel it into something that gives more value to your life, retiring for the fact of "not having to work " anymore is a short sighted goal, and going around in circles in countries is not a long lasting fun yourney either but should be a means to an end as to find that purpose in life for oneself, re-kickstart the creativity that every human being has but got lost along the way of they have to " responsibility we get ourselves into when growing up....take time to reflect and don't chase the 2 second satisfaction that bores you after 3 seconds 🤘
You are doing great . We can see how excited you are now. I got to get to Thailand this winter . I was just going to go to Jamaca for a few months but it the same money to go to Thailand . I'm just afraid of the long flight . You are a inspiration. 😊 I'm looking forward to your videos . Thanks .
Brent, I wish you the best. You're kind of all over the map on this decision, but I'm sure you'll find your piece of heaven. I'm curious on how many of the 82 provinces have you been to? What are you chasing ( location, health care, pu**y, expat community) ? You mentioned boredom, you mentioned that you like to be spontaneous, you like to slow travel. What is it that makes you happy? If Money is not an issue, then why not slow travel the Philippines? I hope you find your happiness, but if you return, get out of the typical expat communities and see the country. There are many youtubers that complete the Philippines loop in 60-360 Days, so if finance is not an issue, then get off your ass and travel to the other provinces. Like I said, I think you're a good person, but maybe you just haven't found the right filipina.
If you can afford it, is the tricky questions. Most expats including vloggers are on a FIX budget . That's the problem, they can not go to all these destinations that you are saying to go to.
Good for you, Brent! Take advantage of all these different countries that are so close and do some exploring. Meet some new people and have some new experiences.
I've heard lots of good feedback about Pattaya. Cambodia needs more infrastructure before I'd live there. But a nice vacation spot. No offense but I'll leave Dumaguete to the old farts. Places with that many elderly expats turn me off. But I'm with you on doing the slow travel thing. As I said before, do what you think is right for you. Our opinions ultimately don't matter. Congrats on your sobriety, btw!
hi Brent. Good move, they say a rolling stone gathers no moss. It can get stale in one place for too long. Just a Question. How much weight in luggage do you travel with. ??
Brent Glad you made your choice , enjoy. See as much as you can, my philosophy is that it's people that make or break a place... Hey its your life, live it lol... Cheers Glenn
Chiang Mai is great and Pai 2 hrs away in the mountains is a special place. They're also a lot cooler than Pattaya, Phuket and other central and southerly cities.
It’s kinda like when you order take out at a Chinese restaurant here in the states. Can they understand your order? Yes. Do you understand them talking among themselves? No. Do they give a fuck about you? Nope

Congratulations on 6 years, i celebrated 32 earlier this year. I’m hoping to retire in a few years, by 57. I’m planning some trips to south east Asia in the next couple of years, till then I’ll live vicariously through you. You’re living the dream brother!
39 years and still crazy, flying to Philippines every year, been to Taiwan couple times. Feels good to keep movin'
Taxi are outside straight to Pattaya....2 hours...by yourself....not pushed in a little sardine van...for me it s freaking worthit man
Would like to know what an ACR card is. Also just heard Harley Davidson is moving production to Thailand.
Good luck 😊
Good luck and I hope you will find what you are looking for. I hope someone will take care of the orange and white cat.
Spent lots of time in both, Thai people have better culture, more smiles. Also use Grab for transportation
Wherever you go that’s where you are. All the best.
jusy keep blogging.
Travel, to an extent, is exiting but not a life purpose, so eventually you need to channel it into something that gives more value to your life, retiring for the fact of "not having to work " anymore is a short sighted goal, and going around in circles in countries is not a long lasting fun yourney either but should be a means to an end as to find that purpose in life for oneself, re-kickstart the creativity that every human being has but got lost along the way of they have to " responsibility we get ourselves into when growing up....take time to reflect and don't chase the 2 second satisfaction that bores you after 3 seconds 🤘
ive got $6000 a month.
they get nothing from me
im cheap
NOOOOOO,don’t go Brent.
Poo-get not foo-get 😊
We don't care.
go to danang
15 lbs is free so ive gotta trim some fat
Safe travels and hang in there. keep on the videos.
Brent
Glad you made your choice , enjoy.
See as much as you can, my philosophy is that it's people that make or break a place...
Hey its your life, live it lol...
Cheers
Glenn
Great choice. Keep us updated. Thanks
Good luck Sir. Best to you
Hey man are you going to stay the 60 max and move on..?
Not sure yet. Im just going to play it by ear
If you visit Siem Reap, let me know. The people are the nicest you've ever met in your life.
If your leaving to better your life smart choice but this just sounds like a vacation and back to 3rd world living
I heard changi mai was pretty good!
Chiang Mai is great and Pai 2 hrs away in the mountains is a special place. They're also a lot cooler than Pattaya, Phuket and other central and southerly cities.
Can you get by speaking only English in Thailand?
Yes, you'll find people who speak English everywhere in the world, especially in tourist areas.
English is spoken a lot more there nowdays
It’s kinda like when you order take out at a Chinese restaurant here in the states. Can they understand your order? Yes. Do you understand them talking among themselves? No. Do they give a fuck about you? Nope
May I ask are you supporting yourself from Social Security or just living off of savings?
Nosey🙄
