One of my favourite things about Karate is how Virtua Fighter took about 10+ years to add a "pure" Karate practitioner, while Tekken never had a game without karate users, even if that specific karate is "fictional"

To answer the question as to why Karate is the most common in fighting games, for Street Fighter specifically, the devs at Capcom took influence from the manga "Karate Baka Ichidai."
The manga is loosley based on the life of Masatatsu Oyama, the founder of Kyokushin, and features a lot of the extreme training tropes. Ryu was modeled after the main character, and Sagat was modeled after one of the manga's villains.
The series kickstarted a Karate boom in Japan shortly after it began running, which naturally led to an influx of Karate movies, manga, and the like.
In addition to an anime, it also had a trilogy of live action films starring Sonny Chiba, who was a student of Oyama himself.

As a Kyokushin Karateka myself, Jin was my inspiration in training in Kyokushin. It is a style I forever cherish as a martial artist.

The Kyokugen characters in Art of Fighting/King of Fighters [Ryo, Takuma, Robert, Yuri and Marco] are also Kyokushin.

Fun fact about Goju Ryu: the founder’s name is Chojun Miyagi. If you watch martial arts movies you can see where Mr.Miyagi from the Karate Kid series gets his name from plus in Cobra Kai season 2 you can see a picture of Chojun Miyagi

Personally I think Lidia is by far the best version of Karate implementation in a fighting game. She also does multiple styles, represented for example using neko-ashi-dachi in many stances in a shito-ryu way, where shotokan does not (also her notebook in her victory outro says she trained at Okinawa, and the devs said she does something close to Okinawan karate). Easily the best animations too.
Great video, 1st dan in shukokai here :)

Hi! I am very glad that there is someone who knows karate well because I would really like to ask about Lidia's style. Almost everyone says that Lidia uses shotokan, but I saw a video comparing Lidia with Rika Usami using Shito Ryu on one of the TH-cam channels, but I don't remember the name, the creator talked about combining Shotokn and Shito Ryu, Bandami Namaco writes on her website that Lidia fights traditional karate, not Shotokan, although Mr. Tatsuya Naka himself does it Lidia in Motion capture is a shootokan master. Lidia's old kick from T7, "repture", is also used by Howarang, one of her kicks, I don't remember the name, it's basically the "disappearing body technique from Taido", I saw it on "Kuro obi word". In T8, she also uses a new kick from Howarang. Therefore, I would like to ask whether Lidia's style is pure shotokan or maybe with additions, and whether these additions are sparse or small. Can we also risk saying that Lidia's style is a new version of Shotokan? If it is possible and you have time, please answer me because I like Lidia very much. Kind regards.

@piterkl566 I would say in my opinion she's a really good shotokan representation, with small additions added, some schools/organizations are going to vary with what their teachings will be regarding how they go about shotokan, so you will have to also take in consideration with that.

Love the video! Just minor things! Shukokai is not so much a style of Karate but more of the organisation. It's a Shito-Ryu organisation that follows a lineage much like other organisations.
Just like how Ashihara Karate is more of a Kyokushin offshoot that breaks some traditional aspects of traditional Kyokushin due to the lineage. But is ultimately Kyokushin at core.
Probably would've helped to have more insight on the school but not the organisations as they're more representatives OF a school.
I also would've liked to see Uechi-Ryu as it is one of the popular styles used in Okinawa and is part of the big 3 in Okinawa. Maybe even Shorei-Ryu alongside Shorin-Ryu (since it was a system that eventually birthed Goju-Ryu)
Overall, enjoyed the video! Great start to the New Year!🥋

Ahhh ok I see, I kept getting conflicting info whether it is an organization or an actual form. Seen so many articles and videos separating the two.

    • @PhinTheShoto
      @PhinTheShoto 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

@ it does happen sometimes where organisations split lineages and chooses to have different approaches. It's not so much styles, but preferred teaching methods.
Different masters can teach the same style in a different way. But doesn't always mean it's a different style all together. Which is why it's far better to look more into the "Ryu" of a school, than an organisation.
Hitomi would be a Kyokushin-based school with a different approach to Kyokushin. But is still ultimately Kyokushin.

As a Kyokushin practitioner, i gotta say Jin kazama is the best representative for Kyokushin karate in my opinion, the kata he was doing is Yantsu, also I never understood why Ryu and the others were called Shotos which their fighting style has little to nothing to do with Shotokan, Ryu is actually based on Kyokushin founder Mas oyama, and I do agree that Makoto is the best representative for Shotokan, her stances and techniques are more real Shotokan than Ryu, ken, Akuma etc.

    • @Blackmore2323

I feel with Ryu's case and the other shotos, it was heavily due to mistranslation errors. I do remember as a kid so much in magazines being told he was shotokan for some strange reason.
