As a Belgian I now understand how the Italians feel when a pizza gets mollested. Please find the corrected glass with the beers and pour it in more gentle to reduce the foam.
Btw can you guys give our greatest treasure back . I know the french dont claim fries to be yours but it would help if some french people would state its not theirs.
I always heard Belgium has great beer, I came here and... it's not only nothing special but also it's fairly hard to get any decent beer like Baltic Porter or Russian Imperial Stout! ;)
@@tomaszwota1465 one time I asked Dutch friends/colleagues which beer is the most popular beer in the Netherlands - and they were all basically saying a variant of "The one that's currently on OP=OP action/sale" 🤦♂
@@techcodenet yeah, well, that's most other countries too. The general public just drinks whatever affordable beer happens to not taste completely bad. That's normal, I wouldn't blame the Dutch for that. ;) For me, I just don't drink light beers anymore. I prefer the rich taste of stouts, the brown to black colour, the thick, almost oily consistence, the complex taste, the aftertaste, the aroma. Sure, there's also a lot of alcohol in them, sometimes 15%, but let's say Solaris or Risfactor (both Russian Imperial Stouts made in Polish microbreweries) are so rich in taste that you don't even get to taste the alcohol, while some cheaper beers with that high alcohol content will reek of that "spirit mixed with beer" taste. I mean, I tried different Belgian Dubbels and Trippels, Trappist and so on. Eh, they just don't taste good. Not to me anyway. They're comparable with average, some with above average Polish beer of similar type, but that's just not good enough for me. I need me some stouts, some porters. Guiness is about the lowest I can go. Still too watery, but I can suffer through it if there's nothing else. :P
Belgian here. Love your enthusiasm. Two remarks: please please pour the beers in their proprietary glasses, or at least glasses with a “foot”. If you can’t find them, the large Ikea wine glasses work fine. Just not in that barrel that you’re using there. These heavy beers are not brewed to be chugged away, they are to be sipped and enjoyed slowly. You’ll have a lot less foam (don’t let it “cluck” when you pour, take your time), which you shouldn’t drink by the way. Secondly: Leffe is considered the Walmart of stronger beers over here. It is made industrially and made to please the most people possible. The label says 1366 or something, but they just licensed the name of some random abbey to claim the beer is 800 years old. It’s not, it’s fake and made by the same company that owns/makes Bud. But anyway, love your interest in our beers. We’re a small country but we’re pretty good in a few things: beer, fries, chocolate and guns. Best not use those on the same day. Schol!
Can't agree more about Leffe, it's really like supermarket "strong" beer. Duvel is the limit. I personnally don't like Chouffe at all. I'm more into trappists, Rochefort 10 in particular but also Westmalle / Chimay. Otherwise, Quintine Ambrée > all 😎
A Belgian here. If you give these kinds of ratings to some of our more common beers, you'll probably need to change your rating scale when you're going to try out our truly exceptional Belgian beers, such as a Westmalle Double or Triple Trappist, Triple Karmeliet, Chimay Bleue, Delirium Tremens, Orval Trappist, Westvleteren Trappist, Pannepot Reserva 2008, Paix Dieu (only brewed during a full moon) or a Saison D’Erpe-Mere to name a few of the exceptional ones ;-)
My notes as a Belgian: - Do not pour great Belgian beers in such a bucket you call a glass ever again! Every Belgian beer has it's own glass which (so it's said) brings out its flavour and smell better. But you'll be fine with just a decent special beer glass for most of them ;) - You'll get the hang of pouring beers in a good glass after a few tries. - It's indeed Duvel ('Devil' in Flemish accent). Which is like the standard heavy beer if you're not feeling creative. That said, it will knock you out if you're not counting :D - 8% is heavy beer, but it's normal heavy Belgian beer. We have beers of 12% etc. - Please don't taste the foam :p - I don't think Leffe is that special in Belgium. I'm guessing it's a popular beer outside of Belgium because of it's reasonable alcohol level. - Got to repeat, don't ever pour a Belgian special beer like that again :D - Duvel and Leffe are Flemish. We would say 'schol!' - If you want to go deeper into special beers, look for Trappist beers. Those are beers brewed by monks and are generally considered to be with the best beers out there. - Also, you drank three blond beers which are quite accesible. We have all kind of colours. Dark beers we would joke are basically a meal because they are so heavy :D - Putting dark beers and trappist together, I have to recommend Chimay Blue. Which is, umh, something else! Edit: more smileys because people seem to think I'm genuinely hating for the glass :D
It's a bit harsh, demanding an american have speciality beer glasses when he was only able to get hands on three beers. Especially when said glasses were not described! I am all for educationing people, beer is not a subject I teach save that Belgian beer is likely the best in the world. A good critique points out errors and how to correct them. I was a bit surpriced though, that you didn't point out that he erred on the side of cold, when tasting the beers. But I am not a beer expert, so I don't know how much of a disservice he did the beers by serving them so cold.
@@incognitones5604 the glasses were mainly as a lighthearted but real frustration :D I don't expect everyone to have all the glasses which is why I said that just a 'standard special' glass would be fine. But a German liter glass just really isn't haha. I think most special beers mention they should be served at 6-9° but I've never heard anyone complain that they were too cold
A little tip for Pouring Beer, applies to all, Bottle, Can or Faucet. Keep the Glass at a flat angle and only tilt it up slowly when pouring in more Beer, that way you get a smooth pour and an even Balance of Beer and foam. When pouring at a steep angle, Beer Foams a lot more.
lol right? I'm Dutch and I was like "dude wtf are you doing?" I used to pour my dads beer and he'd smack me over the head if there was that much foam. "I'm not a dishwasher!" he used to say.
Watching you pour out the Duvel like that in that glass hurt my belgian soul 🤣but i understand getting both the beer and glass that comes with it, is probably not the easiest over there
I'm Belgian. I'll set aside comments about beers. You really seem to be a decent guy and a decent couple, with you heart and brain at the right place. I've seen a lot of your videos, you are curious, with no or little pre- and misconception about other countries and cultures. Keep up with you videos ! Ps: Santé !

As a belgian guy it was really fun to see you trying belgian beer. We basically have these in every bar, for us it seems casual. Usually we drink this kind of beer in a round glass, that way you have the perfect amount of foam. But hey, a long as you enjoy it, you're good ! La Chouffe is one of my favorite, and most people here will agree. When it comes to Leffe, I highly recommend you looking up the real stoy behind it. When they say "since 1240" they are not really honnest. She said all the names the right way, by the way. In Belium you would say " santé", at least in the french speaking part. The best beers in beligum are the ones made in small breweries, but I guess it's hard to find internationnaly. I really enjoyed the video, thank you !
Looking at this being a Belgian. I don't know much time it took to film this but when I saw you drinking it like that made me giggle a bit. When you drink these beers the same way you drink a regular american beer, you're going to have a real party in your head. It is best to take your time with it and enjoy the flavours.
I love seeing it happen. my US friend got his hands on a 4-pack of Duvel a while ago for the first time. he's an "adequate" drinker and has been comfy with Stella for years. he was perplexed that I gave him a warning to take it easy. and he was perplexed twice when it turned out there was reason behind said warning. "how tf do I drink more than you on average, yet this doesn't tickle you while it's flooring me?" lessons only experience can teach 😂
I was born and raised in Ghent, Belgium. Nice to see how someone is blown away the first time they taste Belgian beer. I am a local guide in the city. We offer tasting tours where we also talk about our rich history. Because as you could see on the Leffe bottle, it goes much further than the origins of your country. That is an abbey that you see on the bottle, so not just any company. Religion is also connected to this. For example, you could also make an episode about Belgian abbey beer. The best known is Westvleteren, which has been awarded the best beer in the world several times.
have you try the Duvel Tripel Hop Citra , its even stronger at 9.5% but it's also quite expensive (not sure where you are or how much you pay but these are not cheap) but has this mad citrus after tase hit
@@jenibond Had the trippel hop a few times. The 6.66 was also nice. But most times i prefer the 'natural' one. Tkx for the tip. The price on carrefoursite for citra: 4x for 8.75 that is a verry good price imo.
Yeah fellow Belgian here and I have to say that the three beers this guy chose are quite bland. He should try some Westmalle Dubbel & Tripel, Gouden Carolus, Orval or Tripel Karmeliet to name just a few actually good Belgian beers.
Next up to try from Bellgium 🇧🇪: tripple Karmeliet, Omer & Westmalle ( if available with right glass, it hurts my belgian heart to see you drink this from such a big pint) keep up the series
Ah! Strong Belgian beers... I assume you've not come across Trappist beers? Only 10 breweries are officially allowed to brew these beers - and they are all monasteries. So the beer must be brewed within the walls of a Trappist monastery, either by the monks themselves or under their supervision. And yes, it's strong. Trappistes Rochefort, for example, is 11.3%. I remember (many years ago) securing a contract job in Brussels and forging out on the first night with a friend. It was cold, windy and tipping with rain. But after three of these things, I didn't notice the weather at all!
the us tried to do a trappist, did it a few years and closed...so no more Spencer brewery ... luckely we have a few in the EU...I live nearby the Trappisten Abdij Koningshoeven..
Duvel is the beer that gets you on your ass without noticing. It's the perfect summer night with a bbq beer. La Chouffe is my favorite to drink on an average day when sitting around with friends. Leffe isn't my favorite, but the dark Leffe I use for cooking stew. There's a reason why our beers are considerd UNESCO world heritage. Germans and Czechs perfected a few types of beers, Belgians (and today American craft beers) threw the kitchen sink at it and ended up with wacky combinations that filtered through time to the point where you can't really go wrong. There's a special type of beer that goes from sweet to sour and are considered the ones that people who don't really like beer should try. They're Geuze, Kriek and Framboise. Some sour, some almost like lemonade.
I fear that if he would even find a Kriek, Framboise, Geuze or Lambiek in the US, it will be one of that lemonade ones and he would get the wrong idea. While he should have an old geuze, kriek or lambiek, those with champagne like corks. But those are even not that common over here in Belgium. If they have those old style kriek, geuze and/or lambiek, you know you are at a good place! Even better if they have vintage bottles, but that's on another level.
When they first made it, some local dude tried it and cried out "what a devil!" so they kept the name. And please don't put the stress on the second syllable;) greetings from Flanders, Belgium if you will
Belgian here, really cool to see people from abroad trying our beers and having a good time, we are really proud of our beer culture. Keep up the good work, thanks for the video!!
Back in August 2000 I had to do a software job in Belgum for a multinational, I got to site with two colleagues on Monday morning and had until 5pm Friday afternoon to get the work done and were not allowed to return to the UK until the consultant and clients had checked everything was completed satisfactorily on the Friday, we completed the work by lunch on the first day!! We spent the rest of the week relaxing by sitting outside pavement cafés enjoying the sunshine, eating fine food and sampling fantastic Belgum beers, One thing I remember with Duvel is after a few my legs would stop working, other than that I felt fine!! And best of all everything was paid to by the client…. …. Jobs like that don’t come along very often.
mate, lol, went to visit some friends in the UK a long time ago, and i promised them i would bring " some" beers. as to be expected, the lads were joking and laughing at me at first, as i only took out Lindemans "Kriek", wich is a very sweet cherry flavored beer. when i ran out of those, i brought out Duvel, one guy was enjoying that one so much he didnt want to taste the other brands i brought with me. now keep in mind that this was during the summer, it wasnt really hot though, but this one guy, sitting in a beach chair, kept joking about belgian beers... until he tryed to stand up to go to the toilet... a very painfull faceplant later, he told me:" take yer belgian shite, go back home and never allow me to drink it again!" we all laughed so hard at this guy. a year or two i got invited to his wedding, and as a gift i had littirally filled my whole trunk with all kinds of belgian beers. ehm... an hour or two into the party, every single person was standing at or near my car, sipping away them beers. at one point the DJ came outside, asking if we would mind to come back inside as more than half of the people were having a blast near my car jolly good memories of that night, and now more than 20 years later, the guys still tells me that i had given him the best wedding gift of all people lmao,
🎉 only 1,500 Belgian beers left for you to taste (each in its unique glass). FYI: we say "santé" in French and "gezond(heid)" in Flemish (meaning "to your health") for "cheers" then knock glasses so they spill on each other ( it used to be how to make sure we drink the same stuff and are not trying to poison our guests). And FYI2: Leffe is considered an "easy/tourist" beer in Belgium, as it's good but not as refined and complicated as other blonde beers. Anyway, thanks for the video and of you need a beer guide when you come in Belgium, I'd be happy to host you guys for the night (and late breakfast, because beer ^^)
I recommend reacting to "belgian beer culture" on youtube. I work for the duvel Moortgat company (i'm not a representative at all btw). Everyone working at the brewery, from someone who cleans the floors, to the sales team, is proud of the heavenly taste we deliver. In 1871 our brewery was established by Jan-Leonard Moortgat, a descendant from the brewers family in Steenhuffel. Today, our CEO is Michel Moortgat. The 4th generation. He actually made Duvel bigger than it used to be. Now we have the privilege to call people all over the world our colleagues. From different breweries in Belgium, the Netherlands, france, italy,... to breweries like, Ommegang, firestone walker and boulevard brewing i NY, CALI, and Kansas respectively. The trick is (as far as i see making sure to keep to each brewery what made it special in the first place. Also you can find a video on yt on how to pour a duvel correctly, and why we pour it like that. Also, chouffe is also part of our big family, and we have alot of love for them
You've got one one of the best jobs in the world, for sure! I came across Duvel beers in northern Germany last year, and boy they're great, especially the triple hop citra. And I have to say it: Belgian beers come in small bottles, but they pack a punch in the ABV league!
And if someone knows about beer drinking attitude, it has to be a Czech! Greetings from Germany 😉. We do have many nice beers here too, but there was never a Czech beer i didn't like!!

I'm a Belgian(Antwerp) bartender with over 25y expierence and enjoy your video's a lot! If you liked the beers ...when you ever get the chance to drink them from draft , that's even tastier! Every beer has its own glas and it takes some practise to pour them correctly! either do it real fast by tilting the glas 45° and turn the bottle upside down near the bottom of the glass and slowly come up or tilt it and do it very slow from the top! the speed equals the amount of foam! Enjoy!
Nice selection of excellent beers! Our southern neighbours really know what they are doing. Their beers are among the best in the world. Love the channel, greetings from The Netherlands!
Duvel is good beer. Regular Leffe is mediocre. Regular Chouffe is quite OK. Leffe IPA is much better; Chouffe IPA is really really good. Just don’t poor the whole bottle: there is ‘fond’ at the base of the bottle which is an excellent treatment for constipation.

Belgian beers are legendary and if you ever go there, you will be amazed at the wide variety of beers and most of them have their own glasses. I’d definitely recommend visiting Bruges.
Tilt the glass more or less to control how much of a head you want Ian - the more horizontal the glass is the less foam there'll be - and pour a little bit slower, try not to let the flow 'glug', keep it as laminar as you can by always leaving an air-hole above the outflow - let air in as the beer comes out, no glugging, smooth laminar flow gives a smooth, consistent foam.

Well my experience is otherwise my friend, witnessed best on a train travelling to Bruges and it was a jamboree - lots of kids and their minders, scouts and the like. The ticket checker came through the carriage and tried Flemish, then French, then Dutch and finally English - and that was train staff - not too many multilinguals this neck of the woods, so full marks from me. Im german and live right to the belgian border. So in my teenage years i discovered belgian beers and tasted all they had to offer. They are a complete different world to the stuff we have in taste, texture, colour, alcohol volume and bottle shapes. My personal taste for beers developed and changed within the years and now that i am in my 40s im very choosy but when i was young i preferred the belgian brand "Grimbergen Optimo Bruno". It comes in this little stubby bottles like Duvel with 11 Alc Volume and it has a rich malty and sweet taste almost like a german maltbeer or murican rootbeer. Its devious because you dont taste the alcohol and after a few bottles it hits you when you start to walk.
15:40 can are actually best.. no licht at all.bber deteriarates in light, that is why good beers have dark glass bottles..drafts come out giant beercans.. cans are closest to what brewer made
As for the 1240 date. The company brewing Leffe is not that old, but the history of the beer really goes back to the those times. In medieval Europe many (or even most?) breweries were controlled by monks in Abbeys. it was a method for the clergy to raise some money for the Abbey. the abbey of Leffe was founded in 1152, and the brewery came under their control in 1240. Over the centuries it switched ownership many times. Nowadays most of these ancient brands are controlled by the large multinationals. (But not all, some are still original run by monks)
I'm a Belgian and even felt a little proud being one watching this video. I love the enthousiasm of you both. We pour slowly and try to create about 2 fingers of foam. The Belgians have a history of winning awards for the best beer year after year. That used to be the case. Beer culture is very deeply rooted here. I am a big fan of the more sour Geuze beer. 'Oude Geuze Boon' or '3 fountains'. A whole world of its own within Belgian beers. Would it be an idea to organize a 'Belgian beer month' on your channel?!
Yes i love Geuze! Pretty hard to come by here in the Netherlands but so far i've had Boon, Mort Subite, Belle Vue and Lindemans. Would really love to try all the other brands so i keep searching. Will definitely be on the lookout for 3 fountains now!
Everyone hating on this video is completely missing the point of beer culture. Of course there are ‘rules’, but the most important thing is to enjoy the experience. I’m very happy to see that you are exploring and enjoying different beers! Keep it up and don’t let these entitled kids make you feel bad for learning and doing something that you like
In Europe during the Middle Ages, beer was drunk with meals instead of water. The reason is trivial and it is because cities polluted rivers, so people drank beer with their meals to avoid getting sick. There is the world's oldest written document on the production of vodka on an industrial scale, written in Poland. It dates back to 1405
Belgian here too.. proud of you having a selection of our beers. I’m not to first to say it but those beers deserve to be poured and consumed from their original glasses. Duvel means Devil and you’ll know why when you’ve had two. Next time also: Try to get your hands on Orval, well known and highly appreciated beer in Belgium!
The citrus flavor is because of the aroma hops they use + koriander is a strong herb taste amplifier . When brewing beer , they use 2 kinds of hops : 1 regular hops boiling from the beginning , mostly for the anti oxidation , to help preserve the beer 2 aroma hops are more delicate and more flavour , and are used for the subtle taste , and are added to the last 3 minutes of boiling . Sometimes hops are added in the fermenting stage too to have a high hops taste ( for ex la chouffe extra houblon )
There are imho too many excellent belgian beers and beer styles to pick a favorite. Pretty much all belgian beers excel in that the flavours are all in balance.
hi , Belgian here. My favorite Belgian beer is Tripple Karmeliet, you really have to taste it! you will be truly amazed!! a blond gold beer with an alcohol content of 8.5%!! litte sweet but strong ! love your video"s!
Hello, also a Belgian here, who enjoys specialty beers. Tripel Karmeliet is considered the classic among tripel beers. If someone has never tried a tripel, let alone a Belgian one, this is the perfect introduction. In fact, I believe that if someone doesn't enjoy Tripel Karmeliet, tripel beer might not be their style at all. I would even go as far as to say that specialty beer might not be their thing. Tripel Karmeliet stands out for its silky smooth taste. The beer also has a very distinctive flavor due to the addition of three different types of grains. Last year, I even tried a special edition brewed with four grains, especially for the holidays. The regular version is already top-notch, but this one was truly sublime. It's among the best Belgium has to offer in terms of beer. If someone like IWrocker had tried this, it would be really difficult to keep insisting that Leffe deserves a rating of 10. In fact, I don't even consider Leffe a worthy Belgian beer. In my opinion, Leffe is the Heineken of Belgium. And yes, I know that I might offend some Belgians with this comparison. Because tastes differ and Leffe is the only Belgian beer that, like Heineken, I can't stand. Moreover, it's not even brewed in Belgium, so it's not that Belgian after all.
As a Belgian person, I can also admit that The Netherlands are brewing better and better beers although more experimental! Love the Netherlands ❤️. Food, towns, open culture and a broad minded focus!
Hello there ! Little Belgian here ;) Happy to see you're enjoying good Belgian beers. There are so many of them ! You're in for a long journey ! xD Just some info, if you're interested, coming from a zythologist friend of mine. Your assumption about taped, bottled or canned is understandable... but not entirely correct. In fact, some beers are better bottled, others are better canned. It's all about the composition and the way the beer evolves after its conditioning out of the brewery. Best advice would be to get it straight from the brewery, and the fastest... of course... Which in your case might be a little complicated for Belgian product :D So while the "canned" solution might seem less "attractive" or "charming"... it can nevertheless in some cases still be the best solution. Also, "Cheers !" in French is "Santé !". Alors, à ta bonne santé mon ami !!!
As a Belgian who has tried almost every Belgian strong beer, i highly suggest you try out the tripel kamerliet and carolus triple! Gouden carolus was chosen in 2010 and 2012 for the best tripel in the world. They both strong ones with a lot of different flavors in contrast with Duvel and La chouffe, who don't have a lot of flavors in my opinion. Also, if i can give a tip, i recommend you to use for strong beers a glass on a leg or if that isn't possible a wine glass. You would taste the flavors more than in a regular beer glass. Hope to see you taste this one's in the future. Keep it up!
Dorn't forget that Belgium is bilingual, so while you're correct to try to pronounce La Chouffe in french, Duvel and Leffe are flemish which is essentially dutch minus the gargling. Thus Leffe does indeed voice the final E.
You shouldn't be drinking beer straight from the fridge. That is the hallmark of someone who doesn't really like the taste. The reason is that too cold beer dulls your taste. For stronger beers it should generally be around 55°F (13°C). I'd say it's fine to keep it in the fridge. But for the maximum enjoyment take it out at least 10-15 minutes before drinking it.
Haha! This was an excellent episode! My first wife is Belgian, and I was thoroughly educated in the culture and history of Belgian beer. They really know what they're doing, and they (quite rightly) take it just as seriously as the culture surrounding wine. In Belgium, each beer is served at the correct temperature, and in its' own specific glass, carefully designed to compliment the beer it contains. When choosing a beer, even the appropriate time of day, and the food it accompanies is often considered. One Belgian beer you really must try (actually, a range of beers) is by Chimay. I imagine they must be commonly available even in the States. Also, "kriek" beers - which are brewed with a particular type of cherry. It sounds a bit "novelty", but they've been brewing this type of beer for many years, and kriek is produced by a number of companies. (Your favourite, Leffe is pronounced, "Leff-er" in the North [Flemmish] - and in the South [French] it's pronounced "Leff"). Je pense que tu es un peu saoul, mon pote!
drinking in Belgium is dangerous. I tried three different beers (all served in their own unique glass) and then stumbled back to my airbnb completely wasted 🤣
Hi, Belgian here. Glad that you liked our beers. Those 3 are very common in Belgium so you had a good sample of what we may drink in our "everyday" life. Perhaps it would have been better to taste the Leffe first, as it has a lighter taste. The pronounciation by your wife was not bad by the way. Ha and about our version of "cheers", in French we usually say "santé" (=health, it may sound weird to say health while drinking alcohol but you wish it to your fellow drinkers) and in Dutch they say "gezonheid", which means health as well. Both languages are spoken here in case you didn't know.
I´ve never heard anyone say gezonheid 🤣🤣. But i fully agree, he did them in the wrong order, leffe is the worst out of the 3 and duvel is way too strong of a flavor to start with for a non duvel drinker... As for the pour of that duvel........ i`m still crying inside....
We Belgians are nice people and we understand it isn't easy to find those special glasses in a godforsaken place such as the USA. So we will not make any negative comments about it.
@@flitsertheo No, but it just isn't good for the taste and experience. Pooring at an angle is a huge improvement right away, and when I don't have the right class I take a big wine glass or something.

Msg from a Flamish speaking Belgian: lots of respect for your comments and appreciation for our beers. Here you can find them in every supermarket and bar. And many many more. Tips that were given about the glasses I do support, it’s like eating hotdogs with a knife and a fork. Even a large wine glass would be better. For Duvel (devil) put the glass in the freezer for 10 minutes and poor slowly while holding in an angle. Thanks 🙏
In Belgium all beers are served in their proper glasses. A small point to others but special to some. I have seen many people caught out by Belgian beers. As I, some time ago, worked for thirteen years as a barman in Luxembourg.
@@PatrickVandepitte-s3ithe hype about craft beers really raised that number in recent years. So much things to taste, but unfortunately, a lot of them went into the IPA style and it's quite boring.
That used to be the case. InBev bought many of them, forced them to use their formula or made them close the doors for not distributing and promoting them as they do with their ‘signature’ beers.
As a Belgian... glad you like them. FYI, we have about 1500 different beers in Belgium... just a few more to try! 😁 Also, I recommend looking at tutorials like 'how to pour Belgian beers' and what kind of glass to use. It's mainly to have less foam so you better enjoy the beer.
As a Belgian. I'm offcourse glad that you like our beer. Have a look into the glasses though. Like Duvel (translated Devil) has developed their own glass with an engraved D in the bottom of the chalice glass to keep the bubble forming so you have this constant layer of foam. Also if you draft it perfect it should have like 2 fingers of foam on top for that you would need to hold the glass a bit more sideways (around 45 degrees) . Also not that beer has a different flavour at different temperatures so 2 degrees C is a bit to cold and can make it taste more bitter. We have some really good brown pubs where they ask you do you want your beer in room temp/Basement temp or fridge temp. If you want a famous one look for the legendary 18th-century basement in the “Ilot Sacré”. In 2004 Delirium Café held the Guinness World Record for the most beers offered with 2004 different beers. Today they are getting close to 2500 beers on the counter!
Not with Duvel. If you fill its original glass with only two fingers of foam it will have 50cl in it instead of the 33cl that is in the bottle. The correct way to pour it is such that it fits the entire bottle content and the foam reaches the top of the glass, preferably arching slightly above it. In the case of Duvel this will get you about three fingers wide of foam.
As a Belgian, i consider these our more generic beers. Not bad, but normal. Also we say sante or gezondheid. But you should try some of our brown beers. A world will open up for you my friend. Sint Bernardus, Rochford, chimay. But likely, not easy to find
A number of people have made a big deal about the glass(es) IWrocker used. When we visited Belgium we were very impressed by Belgian beers and that the bars had a specific glass for every beer. Not brewery, beer. A different glass for each Duvel beer, etc. When we got back to the USA we were at a beer tasting at the Meddlesome Moth in Dallas hosted by one of the founders of La Choufe. He gave us glasses as souvenirs of the tasting. He said something like (it's been over 10 years, so I may not have the wording quite right), "People ask why we selected these glasses. Was it the shape? Was it the size, the glass, the lip? No, not so much. When we started the brewery we were very low on money and these were the cheapest glasses we could find." Boston Brewing asked some graduate students at MIT to design the perfect beer glass for them. Every week, a fresh keg of Sam Adams Lager was delivered to the students for their research. I suspect that this may have slowed the progress of the research. At some point, Boston Brewing stopped the project and began selling whatever the students had developed at that point. I am less concerned with the glass he used, though he could have used a better one, as the way he poured the beer and the serving temperature of the beer. American mass market beers are typically served just above their freezing point so you won't taste them. You can't taste much at those temperatures. Europeans tend to drink their beers at "cellar temperature" which Americans call "warm" but is actually around 55F. The beers are brewed to be best at that temperature, while American mass market beers at that temperature are less than pleasant. It is a shame IWrocker didn't get to really taste the wonderful Belgian beers.
....completly agree with your explanation about the temperature ..just above freezing point is really too cold, especially for the heavier beers (also for any lighter beers from 5/5.5°). If you drink these heavy (8.0/9.5°) beers too cold, you are certainly making concessions to the taste ..also, the alcohol effect will suddenly hit you more intensely afterwards (I think you could use a nap afterwards). A few of these heavy beers in a row will also affect your taste. You can discuss the shape of the glass ..but it is best to always be very clean. It is preferable not to put one beer in the same uncleaned glass as the previous beer. Hold your glass at an angle and then pour on that sloping side ...less foam itw. A lot of other Belgium beers to try! ..Omer, Karmeliet, Gruut, Kasteelbier, Chimay, Delirium Tremens, Verboden Vrucht, Mort Subite (brewery), Gouden Carolus (Het Anker - brewery)... ...also lighter ones, Vedett, Vedett IPA, Cornet, Palm, Kriek, Geuze, Hoegaarden (Celis?) ...and so much much more, too many to mention...
Many Belgian beers are served in a specific glass for that particular beer, they're not often served in a generic beer glass with the possible exceptions of Jupiler and Stella Artois. Most bars in Belgium have their beers listed in a menu at each table.
duvel is a speciality beer which was created to produce same style beer which UK soliders brought to belgium in WW1. Named victory ale also and was released when WW1 was over. One of the best beers i have tried..
I'm not trying to poke fun at anyone here but years ago my local pub was near a RAF base that trained helicopter pilots, from time to time they'd have some pilots over from the USA. Many a time they would come unstuck drinking european beer for the first time, we'd try and tell them. "Hey buddy we'll drink you lot under the table any day of the week", well five pints later and under the table they learned a valuable lesson, we don't do light beer over here.
Great content, I love seeing people try Leffe for the first time. We only get the watered down version in the uk now 😬. Defo needs a chalice glass though, the Duvel bottle tells you how to pour it on the bottle😆.
Trappist Westvletteren 12 is a hearty Belgian beer which has a warming caramel-type taste and a scent of raisins. Being 10.2 volume alcohol, it has a long aftertaste. Just remember that three 33cl glasses of this beer has the same alcohol as a bottle of Bordeaux or Rioja wine!! I learned that the hard way about 55 yrs ago. 🥴
Getting a hold of Westvleteren can be pretty difficult. We used to sell all variants at the place I worked at.. needed like a whole smuggling operation
@@jnm92I heard they were going to sell limited batches online to the Netherlands to put a stop to that, as they weren't getting back the bottles for recycling/refilling
As a Belgian, i'm almost getting a heart attack seeing you not using the approprate glasses for each beer. 😂 Also poring the beer in the glas is an art to get the right amount of foam on the beer.
its not beer you can drink regularly, its too complex. Its a young person's beer who like to experiment. If I just need a beer on a summer's day, give me a Peroni.
We Belgians (atleast for me here in Limburg) we say usually schol, but we have loads of different accents, immigrants from different cultures, languages... Glad you like our beers, come here on a holiday some time!

I always heard Belgium has great beer, I came here and... it's not only nothing special but also it's fairly hard to get any decent beer like Baltic Porter or Russian Imperial Stout! ;)
@@tomaszwota1465Bad taste then. Taste buds destroyed by vodka and trash russian beer 😂
@@VlerkeDamne dude. RIS, despite the name, isn't Russian. You would know that if you knew anything about beer beyond "it's 2 euro per bottle".
That's normal, I wouldn't blame the Dutch for that. ;)
For me, I just don't drink light beers anymore.
Schol!
Chalice glasses or tulip glasses rather than beer mugs for Belgian beers.
Can't agree more about Leffe, it's really like supermarket "strong" beer. Duvel is the limit.
I personnally don't like Chouffe at all. I'm more into trappists, Rochefort 10 in particular but also Westmalle / Chimay. Otherwise, Quintine Ambrée > all 😎
To be fair, a lot of beers use that age trick. Also a lot of bars that claim to be hundreds of years old
Jup Leffe sucks😂😂
Thirdly: don't massacre a Duvel (Devil) like that! Treat it lightly and pour it even more lightly.

@@koenleijnen1900 Actually you could drink a different Belgian beer each day for 4.3 years before you need to taste another one twice ;-)
My notes as a Belgian:
- Do not pour great Belgian beers in such a bucket you call a glass ever again! Every Belgian beer has it's own glass which (so it's said) brings out its flavour and smell better. But you'll be fine with just a decent special beer glass for most of them ;)
- You'll get the hang of pouring beers in a good glass after a few tries.
- It's indeed Duvel ('Devil' in Flemish accent). Which is like the standard heavy beer if you're not feeling creative. That said, it will knock you out if you're not counting :D
- 8% is heavy beer, but it's normal heavy Belgian beer. We have beers of 12% etc.
- Please don't taste the foam :p
- I don't think Leffe is that special in Belgium. I'm guessing it's a popular beer outside of Belgium because of it's reasonable alcohol level.
- Got to repeat, don't ever pour a Belgian special beer like that again :D
- Duvel and Leffe are Flemish. We would say 'schol!'
- If you want to go deeper into special beers, look for Trappist beers. Those are beers brewed by monks and are generally considered to be with the best beers out there.
- Also, you drank three blond beers which are quite accesible. We have all kind of colours. Dark beers we would joke are basically a meal because they are so heavy :D
- Putting dark beers and trappist together, I have to recommend Chimay Blue. Which is, umh, something else!
Edit: more smileys because people seem to think I'm genuinely hating for the glass :D
Sweds/Norwegians has FAXE, damn its heavy....

Chimay is indeed a good entry into the Trappist world. Sounds like a topic for a next episode. 🍻 (wrong glasses, I know 😂)
It's a bit harsh, demanding an american have speciality beer glasses when he was only able to get hands on three beers.

Orval is my favourite
You have some great beers, but I haven't found a Kriek yet that I liked
The Germans lack imagination (nothing new there) and then there is their "Reinheitsgebot".
I tried the Leffe Bruin and it's almost an analogue to Guinness, another base for a good beef stew or pie.
Or you could try the precursor to Geueze, the Lambiek. Probably at La Bécasse, in Brussels

Enjoy!
Can't believe people requested Leffe blonde 💀

Nice selection of excellent beers! Our southern neighbours really know what they are doing. Their beers are among the best in the world. Love the channel, greetings from The Netherlands!
Duvel is good beer. Regular Leffe is mediocre. Regular Chouffe is quite OK. Leffe IPA is much better; Chouffe IPA is really really good. Just don’t poor the whole bottle: there is ‘fond’ at the base of the bottle which is an excellent treatment for constipation.
Somebody needed a nap after drinking these.

Germany has way better pilsners than Belgium🍻
Try "Kerel's Kaishaku" they sell that beer in the Albert Hein shops in Belgium it's 15alc and you'll be in for quite a surprise ;-)

Greetings to the World's Happiest American. Seen you laugh and smile a lot before, but those beers just made your smile about 3 feet wider! Cheers!

It dates back to 1405
But back then beer would contain 1- 2% alcohol.
Any beer made by celibate monks with a cork in it (mind the pun) is the best Belgium beer. For me it’s the La Trappe, Trappist. Isid’or 😉
@@Slippery_Pickle47.3 Quadruppel🤤
Orval is also my favourite but probably very hard to get outside Belgium
@@Slippery_Pickle47.3 La Trappe is a Trappist from The Netherlands 😅
Orval is SOOOOOOOO GOOD! I have 3 big cases of Orval at home 🤤❤
Duvel means devil in the old Flemisch language. It’s the perfect name for the beer because it hits like the devil
As a Belgian myself, Duvel is the best beer ever made imo

hi , Belgian here.
Leffe blond is one of my absolute favorites ever, as a dutch person im very grateful to our neighbours

You're in for a long journey ! xD
Just some info, if you're interested, coming from a zythologist friend of mine.
Which in your case might be a little complicated for Belgian product :D
So while the "canned" solution might seem less "attractive" or "charming"... it can nevertheless in some cases still be the best solution.
Put your glass 45° and pour slow and steady. Turn the glass back straight up if you want to add more foam
YES!!!! Good beer should be between 47°F and 57°F, or you are missing out on the flavor.

In Flemish we say “Schol”, “gezondheid”’is what you find in text books. Very formal and almost never used :)

@@elinys2843AB InBev is really a pain in the ass.
As a Belgian... glad you like them.
FYI, we have about 1500 different beers in Belgium... just a few more to try! 😁
Also, I recommend looking at tutorials like 'how to pour Belgian beers' and what kind of glass to use.
Good advise! Chimay is my favorite, their Grande Réserve just hits the right spot!
Qui boit trop de Duve, tombe dans la cuve
Qui boit trop de geuze, tombe dans la Meuse
I blacked out when you poured the duvel in THAT glass.. So that in Belgium and you'd be the center of (unwanted) attention 😂.
When we started the brewery we were very low on money and these were the cheapest glasses we could find."
Boston Brewing asked some graduate students at MIT to design the perfect beer glass for them.
