  • Loyola is the first academic medical center in northern Illinois to offer high dose rate (HDR) prostate brachytherapy, a precise radiation treatment for prostate cancer. The radiation dose is delivered in minutes and removed immediately after the treatment. HDR brachytherapy differs from the most common form of prostate brachytherapy, in which radioactive “seeds” are implanted in the prostate and remain radioactive for months. For more information, please visit www.loyolamedicine.org/find-a... or call 888-584-7888.

I had 4 sessions.......first insert tubes (under anaesthetic) then radioactive pins inserted then removed. Second session in the afternoon with pins inserted and removed. Third session next morning - same as second. Fourth session ditto but the tubes were then removed and that was it. Discharged the next day. Bowel and bladder movements almost normal. Little or no pain.

I came within 24 hours of chemical castration (which they euphemistically like to call "hormone therapy"). Neither my urologist nor my radiation oncologist ever suggested that brachytherapy might be an option. Via lots of research, I cancelled the hormone shot and now have an appointment to look at whether I'm a good candidate for brachytherapy. For those out there who have been told they need external beam with hormone suppression, I urge you to investigate the long term effects of chemical castration..... from what I can tell, you will never be the same. Logically, brachytherapy (either low dose permanent seeds which deliver a higher dose in the long run, or high dose which is a quick but very strong exposure) makes a lot of sense as it delivers radiation most directly to the location of the cancer. Please do your own research and do NOT just accept what the first doc says. A doctor is very likely to recommend the thing that they are specialized in, be it surgery, external beam radiation with castration, or brachytherapy. This is not like being treated for a broken leg.... YOU MUST DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH.

Containment inside the prostrate and probably Gleason score are probably two factors that determine if you are a good candidate for seedeing. Not sure if they automatically due a pet scan for lower grades. Its a hot mess for sure. My urologist says removal is the gold standard. Your right do your research

What danger am I in (if any), if sex occurred within a week of HDR Brachytherapy instead of two weeks? Thank you for your help with this.

I had a different procedure (In Australia) Where the seeds were implanted permanently and I had to pass my urine through a sieve in case one of the seeds come loose and if this happened I had to put the seed into a lead pot and return it to the cancer center. I had to use the lead pot for about 12 weeks. The first two weeks it was a bit painful passing urine but was helped with flomaxx. After 12 months the radiation subsides to minimum levels. I still occasionally get an erection but can't hold it. I had it done in Oct 2019 . And have regular PSA tests. The last test was 4 if that means anything.

I had to also have hormone injections every 3 months and tablets and after a series of 4 less than 0.01 PSA counts ,I experienced so far no sexual desires 8 months after the operations etc..

Congrats on the low PSA. Could you elaborate on your statement "I experienced so far no sexual desires 8 months after?" Was that worded correctly? in other words, has sexual function returned to normal now? and what is your current PSA? Thanks so much in advance !!!

@@nlerriorduno9772 I just had this completed in Phoenix on 12/21/20, just in time for Xmas. There is no pain before the procedure, since you are anesthetized. Afterwards, after you are awake comes the pain, when they cut the sutures and extract all 18 knitting needle-sized tubes at one time, after both procedures. It seems like an agonizing eternity, but probably is only a minute or two. They give anti-biotics and Flomax (urine flow enhancer). I had an expert, and have minimal side effects, so far. There is pain at the first bloody urination, but it rapidly gets much better. The burn lessens each time. I never took any of the pain meds. It didn't really hurt much after a couple hours. It seems to be improving, even after only a week. A few blood drops at night, but no incontinence. The "other" function is still there, and I think is improving, but I am an old guy and I can't expect to be 16 again. I hope this helps.

@@RH-xd3nx I'm shuffling papers. The best I can do from memory is : St. Joseph Cancer Center on Thomas St. in PHX. If I find my paperwork, I can give you a proper location. The surgeon was Dr. Patel. (There are two by that name, but only one does HR Brachytherapy).
