  • “A KIWI AT AN AUSSIE BAR | Australian Beer Sizes” is a short comedy sketch about Australia’s unique and confusing system for beer measurements.
    If you’re ordering a beer in Australia, you may need to decide between a pot and a pony, a middy and a schmiddy, or a schooner and a pint… Just remember that the names and sizes change per state so if you’re in South Australia a schmiddy is a schooner and a pint isn’t a pint…
    Pretty straightforward really!
    Meanwhile, if you’re in New Zealand, just ask for “a beer” and see what you get.
    She’ll be right!
    Thank you to the legends at Young Henrys for hosting me at their brewery and for serving the best damn thimble of IPA in town! Go ahead and pay them a visit: / younghenrysbrewing

    In NZ, we can order by the Jug. But there are different sized jugs. There is the 750, 1l, 1.25 and 1.5. Hence, the first question you need to ask a barmaid is “What size are your jugs”.

    I asked a barmaid in the U.S. for "a STUBBIE of your local beer". Her expression changed to anger and I knew there was an uppercut coming. So I quickly added "No, no. It's a 375 mil bottle. The bar tender lady thought my kiwi accent had asked for a 'pot' of beer and gave me a teeny 7 oz glass. WTF - is with that??? Post international incident: advice was that I should have asked for a midi (apparently pronounced Meedee - like needy) and if I was feeling lucky I could have asked for a schooner, but to this day I am not sure what I would have got.

    This is a true story.
    Sitting in the railway hotel in townsville, early eighties,
    2 tasmanians walked in.
    Both asked for a beer. The barmaid, playing it safe gave them a 10oz. Along the bar were stubbies coolers. One of the tasmanians asked what they were, the barmaid answered, you put your beer in them to keep them cold.
    They looked at each other and one of them actually poured his beer into it. Naturally it went all over the bar.
    The barmaid gave him another beer and explained to him that they were for stubbies.

    • @ImFieldy
      @ImFieldy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      true but u can/could (1980) only order a pony ( i think 7oz) if u sat/stood up at the bar. Personally fresh off the boat from Pomland I thought it was superb - u got a fresh chilled beer (not over 2 or was it 4 deg C) in a glass from the freezer cabinet every time. Talk about civilised :) Good onya Oz. A midi was 10oz and a schooner 15oz. if memory serrves me well.

    • @nuklhed5478
      @nuklhed5478 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends where you are but a pony is either 5oz (half a pot/midi), or 6oz. Schooner in Vic is 15oz and pint 20.
