    Did you put zip ties around the BIC lighters to prevent accidental release of butane?
    A Victorinox Climber (with scissors) or Huntsman (with wood saw) would be a better choice than the Mora Eldris. It is more versatile, has more tools, and more traditional. A Mora Companion would also be better than the Eldris because it has a larger handle, which is easier to hold, and can also be used for food prep.
    A compact folding umbrella (in addition to the poncho) would be good because it is easier to deploy, especially for short periods.
    2 Dollar Tree plastic toolbox (weighs about 1 ounce, keeps things together and protects them): I use them to hold things under the car seats.
    2 Dollar Tree headlamp (high, low, and flash, uses 3 AAA batteries, cheap extra light source)
    It should also include:
    1 pair sun glasses (cheap plastic ones from Harbor Freight are great)
    1 book of matches (for redundancy and weighs almost nothing)
    1 tealight candle
    1 small notebook and pencil
    1 compass
    1 signalling whistle
    1 small basic travel sewing kit
    2 N95 dust masks
    50' paracord (for tying up or securing anything)
    1 roll Gorilla Tape-To-Go (for a quick temporary mend or to secure things, also can be used for fire starter)
    1 cell phone charger and cable
    1 car cigarette-lighter USB adapter
    1 battery bank charger for cell phone
    1 small bag of hard candy (for a slow sugar boost)
    1 small container of cough drops
    2 1-liter bottles of water (because it is quicker and easier than finding and filtering water)
    1 crank radio (to listen for emergency announcements or entertainment)
    8 plastic grocery bags (for trash, dirty clothes, shoes, carrying things, etc.)
    plastic zipper bags to contain and protect various items
    2 hand towels
    1 wash cloth
    1 double clip clothes hanger (to hang clothes or cloths for use or to dry)
    1 or 2 changes of clothes
    1 pair of slip-on shoes (to have extra and be more comfortable)
    1 pair shower shoes (to protect feet and prevent picking up foot diseases)
    a hygiene kit (hair comb/brush, tooth brush, tooth paste, small pack of tissues, tampons (can also be used for fire tinder), small bottle of hand sanitizer (can also be used for cleaning or fire starter), small bar of soap or bottle of liquid soap, deodorant, lip balm stick, tweezers, small scissors, etc.)

      @@corleyoutdoors2887 I thought of several more items.
      Walmart sells cheap ($0.98, or they used to be) kitchen knives that come in a scabbard.
      Several years ago, Dollar Tree sold a nice knife in a scabbard, but not now.
      Walmart also sells The Pioneer Woman Pioneer Signature Stainless Steel Paring Knife, 3.5 inch, Teal ($8.44). It was highly regarded in a military/survival video as being a tough knife. Unfortunately, it doesn't come with a scabbard, and it only comes in teal.
      Dollar Tree Scrub Buddies Heavy Duty Long-Cuff Large Reusable Pink Latex Gloves
      These gloves are good to either keep hands clean when doing dirty tasks or can be kept clean for food prep.

    Nicely put together kit. I would make a couple of suggestions: 1. When you held up the bandana, you said she can also use it for signaling, I would suggest to add a whistle, 2. I would recommend a checklist for her to look at before leaving. In the checklist put in a reminder for prescription medications. I have a 76 y.o. Mother, she has prescription medications. 😊

    Thank you I just added hearing aid batteries and denture cream for Mom, she needs to add old pair of Rx glasses. Added a cooling towel since it so hot here and elderly overheat easily. Really grateful for sharing your set up. Mom would never be able to handle the sawyer so having the right size water bottle for 1 water purification tablet is very smart. I am going to label them in large print so she can easily read the instructions.

      Thoughtfully put together kit....I would consider a few other things;
      • Diddy/Ditty bag - micro towel, wet wipes, toothbrush, toothpaste, liquid soap, comb, signal mirror, medication like Anti histamine, Immodium, Panadol, Probiotic (... water purification tabs also effect your stomach biome), insect repellent.
      • Flip Flops
      • Head sock/buff and ear plug in string (it can be difficult to sleep in distressed conditions - eyes and ear covers can help shut out the chaos)
      • Emergency whistle
      • BIC lighters - all orange, remove the child safety, distribute them in different places (1 with the cook set, I with the Diddy bag, 1 in top pouch?)
      • Laminated contacts card, local map
      • A change of clothes
      • Coffee, Tea, Hot chocolate, Electrolight, Sugar satchels....whatever she prefers drinking
      • Vasoline soaked cotton works great but is very messy....stuff them into short sections of plastic straws heat sealed at both ends...or better still make your own fire plugs (wax infused cotton dental swaps)
      • Personally if you can afford it I find the light weight folding (accordian style) foam sleep pads are better than the rolled foam
      • Also check that the silcock key works on the public secure water spigots....In my country they use a multitooth socket style key (you can find it at irrigation supply stores)
      Sounds like a lot but most are small changes/additions, Just food for thought....

    Nice job mate, looking after mom is a priority for sure, when we're away from them it pulls at the old heart strings wondering if their ok, ya got most short term things covered in that kit, and I'm sure your mom will add those little necessary items that she can't do whithout, lol. I'm 75 next month whith some health issues, so if shtf comes, bugging out for me is a last resort I'm afraid, unless it's a life or death situation. Although I think I could manage the 13lbs ya have there, but not for very far. Thanks for the video, it's given us food for thought, stay safe, best wishe's to you and your's, Stuart UK.

    One suggestion I would make is to take the plastic tab to lift the lid off the Stanley cook pot and replace it with a key ring. The plastic piece on the lid is known to melt while the pot is heating up. You mom can use a stick to lift the lid off whatever she is cooking or boiling water.

    Nice setup. I wold like to critique two of your systems… 1. I would go with the thermarest accordion style sleep mat. she’s going to have a heck of a time fighting with that roll up mat. I’ve used them in the past and I’ve had to fight with them to keep them flat and prevent rolling up on me. 2. Ditch the Nalgene bottle and life straw and switch to a 1L smart water and a sawyer squeeze or sawyer mini. That will save her several ounces of weight and the filter is way more reliable.

    • @corleyoutdoors2887
      @corleyoutdoors2887  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great suggestions! Those roll up thermarest are hard to deal with and filtering water like thru-hikers is the lightest way to go. Thanks for watching.

    Outstanding bag. Honestly, this is also pretty solid for most kids and teens, anyone with mobility injuries, or just anyone who isnt into preparedness.
    The only (constructive) criticism i have is that if she is in an urban area (like i am) its entirely possible for water sources to get some form of chemical contamination.
    So instead of the Life Straw, possibly switch it our for a Survivor Filter, a Hydroblu Sidekick, etc.
    Their activated charcoal elements will absolutely help with chemical and heavy metal contamination for about the same size and weight.

    • @corleyoutdoors2887
      @corleyoutdoors2887  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for watching. You’re right about chemicals, I thought she wasn’t strong enough to press a Grayl Geopress, but she proved me wrong. I’ll have to send her one.

    That package of chlorine dioxide has me questioning my choices. I have my kit with iodine tablets, to be used in conjunction with boiling and sawyer filters, but it looks like those, while a bit more spendy, and taking longer (4 hours vs. 30 minutes treatment and 3 minutes for taste neutralizing), it might be a better option, as it will kill more bad things in the water, and not need a taste neutralizing agent.
    I would also suggest cracking open and trying out the emergency ration bars. Some versions are less palatable than others. My preference is for the SOS cinnamon flavored ones, but I also haven't tried the multi flavors of Millennium bars.
    Also, depending on dietary restrictions and/or preferences, those squeeze peanut butter packets have lots of calories for cheap. Skippy has 1009 calories/pouch, and Jif has 2124 calories/pouch. But peanut butter only lasts about 2 years, compared to 5 for the ration bars.

    • @corleyoutdoors2887
      @corleyoutdoors2887  ปีที่แล้ว

      You’re right about those rations I tried them in their garbage. The SOS rations are the best tasting ones and they’re wrapped better.

    I was watching your video again, and I thought I would recommend the Sawyer Water Bottle. It's not metal , but the Sawyer mini is contained in the bottle, and it's 32 oz. It takes the guesswork out of how much water you have. Even with the filter removed, it's easy to add water tablets as needed. Just fill up and go. I've included these in my car kit and my teenage boys' backpacks for school. Best Regards.

    Good for you for looking after your mom. And that's a well rounded kit. I still say to add a small tarp, never know when she might have a situation where she could use a little extra cover element, also a 100' hank of paracord. And lastly, that Mora Eldris is a great little crafting knife(I have one), but I suggest getting a SAK Victorinox Huntsman pocket knife/multi-tool to add to the kit. Again because you never know when she might want or need a pair of scissors, a screwdriver, a can or bottle opener, tweezers, toothpick. These 3 items combined will weigh maybe just over 1lb. and could be very helpful if she were to need them. JMHO!!!
    I shared links for these items.

    • @corleyoutdoors2887
      @corleyoutdoors2887  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. I don’t feel comfortable promoting gear because what works for my mom in Texas may not work for another person’s needs or location. If you cover shelter, water, fire and food, this works no matter the gear or location. My advice is always research your needs and make careful choices on Amazon. All the gear for my mom was purchased on Amazon. I’m not an Amazon affiliate.

    You could spray that bag with some silicone spray or use bees wax to treat it so it don't get wet and heavy if it gets wet from rain or gets damp from moisture, canvas is nice but it does absorb humidity and maybe some over shoe rain boots would be good and head wear with a scarf.

    • @corleyoutdoors2887

    Awesome video. As a new EDC'er I had a question regarding the purification tablets. If the water is filtered through the bandana and purified with the tablet but still murky and brown, is it safe to drink? Or should you still go life straw

    • @corleyoutdoors2887
      @corleyoutdoors2887  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You want the water to be relatively clear by straining it through the bandana for the tablets to be effective. If you strain the water through the bandanna properly you want have to use the lifestraw. Even if you’re boiling water you want to pre- filter it so that there’s no debris in it before you boil. Boiling is #1 and the safest. I gave her the other 2 methods to cover her if she couldn’t boil. All 3 methods can be used separately depending on your water source. Running water is always your best bet, springs, creeks and rivers. The lifestraw would be my last choice in a urban environment because it doesn’t kill viruses, but if systems we depend on crash, something is better than nothing. If you’re looking for a filter that kills viruses, research the Grayl Geopress.
