Great video. Stone picker story is interesting… considering the wet year you did well to get 3/4 of the repayments needed. Hopefully you’ll make that extra bit next season or soon enough. Can’t beat having a few income streams to balance the books. Keep up the good work.
Fair play , that was an honest acount of a contractor, I remember my own father buying the first round baler in the laois area in the 80s, few years later every farmer had 1
Good man Phil, great video, very upfront and honest as always. Please God next year will be a better one and you get plenty of work with your stone picker 👌
Good video Phil, you give a very honest picture of the machinery payment, you should invest in a shed over the trailers etc would pay for it self in the long run.
Hey Phil brilliant video, most interesting. I don't know of anyone having a stone picker around us on the cotswold hill. Keep up the good work, really looking forward to watching your videos in the new year. 👍
We find you very interesting Farmer Phil. The in’s and out of a life of a farmer 👩🌾.Our is your house getting on that would make a interesting video. So so good luck 😉.
We gave years at stone picking and burying with various machines, packed it in 7 or 8 years ago. In a wet year the machines might never come out of the shed, in a normal year stone picking would be clashing with other dry weather work like sowing or baling, the only chance you'd get to make a few quid at it would be in a dry year when there's no pressure on anyone. A tricky enterprise to make money at with expensive repayments to contend with but the best of luck with it.
U made a good point about its not just a case of go out and buy a baler and people will get u ,, contracting is one sort of work that the contractors themselves are the only ones that truly will understand wat its like , unfortunately it's all about weather and luck tbh
Here in the states I run custom hay and forage harvesting and in my area I'm 1 of 4 in a 400 mile radius and it's cut throat and I've took business away from people and wanna grow to different jobs but that takes finding the right equipment and knowing it'll pay for itself
When some contractors are asked by the farmer for their bill they might not get back to you for weeks their owm fault in some cases not getting paid on a monthly basis like every other work . Good honest video.
Ya may build a folding tine harrow for the front of the 99 to run ahead of the picker. Be more efficient again with every run and might help you with blockages
@@FARMERPHIL3690 like everything, advantages and disadvantages. Saw a video where a lad had a similar picker and had lower pickup bars widened to leave smallish stones and a second machine coming with a stone mulcher busting them up. Looked an expensive bit of kit and I'd say the consumables on it would be a serious regular bill. Ya might need a few more years under your belt getting the customers built up before that. Good investment for tillage farmers long term though as would improve ground and save on machinery wear.
Great Video Phil. Very much follow your situation with just buying a grassland direct drill this season and very pleased that it half paid for the repayments in only 6 weeks due to getting it late in the season. Certainly helps getting something new in the area and just takes time for it to set away.
Superb video. Very informative and well explained. A dry year and it all changes so let’s hope next year for less of the wet stuff. I hope it also shows why farming TH-camrs shouldn’t be afraid to make similar videos every year as it’s great to see the differences each year brings. Thank you.
Great 👌 video Phil. I had my days. Dumped on a Fendt 722 and Case big baler. Got shown the ropes. Hated working for the guy. Lasted 3 weeks. But a best mate out of work.
Good video as always ( a hard video ) a contractor where i live outside Tuam bales silage for customers the payment is take the bales to cover the cost, the contractor then has to sell the bales during the winter months to cover his expenses, good luck.
Used to be on hire with one of the older ones. Gave it up in the end. Main issues were fellas didnt have ground prepped right/ didnt have it harrowed right or have the big stones picked. Flat stones used block the rotor aswell. Crow bar and sledge were always on board. Also had lads complaining of the price per hour😂
Thank you so much for that explanation of contracting. I want to get into cutting and handling silage. I'm always seeing videos of people that have more business than they can handle or people that need their silage cut but they're waiting for their contractors to have time for them. So far I'm thinking an older tractor that's easy to afford, some kind of cutter/blower combo and a wagon. Shouldn't be too expensive to start out with but it'll get the job done. I'd be just fine with picking up the extra jobs that others can't get to. Only thing stopping me? I don't even have the money for the cheap stuff. Time to start saving up.
saw a stone picker in use in Scandinavia a few years ago, was the 1st time i saw one in action. contractor was clearing old forest ground. He also had a triple K and towed it on a trailer behind the picker when going from job to job. He would run the harrow over the field 1st then put on the stone picker.
Very good video your right about the baler their is plenty of them around Hopefully you will get that job next year and not easy to get paid going out the gate some people will leave you waiting good job
I don't know you're situation Phil, but I think you need to look into the finances of contracting in a bit more depth. You're judging against if you can meet repayments and pay diesel, but not counting any wage for the driver or depreciation on the tractor. If you don't count those things then you just end up tricking yourself into thinking you're making profit when you're actually just subsidising the contracting business with money from yourself that you weren't paid or the farm through tractor costs that weren't paid through contracting. Maybe reach out to a professional or whoever does your accounts
Very interesting, informative and honest account of your year in contracting, on wards and up wards for next year, hopefully a drier year than this cause every farmer needs it badly 👍
Your videos are good and right to the point and that's why I follow you you tell the story like it is and not the bull#@t most try and tell you great video keep them coming 👌👌
If you going to use the 99 again on the stone picker id say get your self a hydraulic toplink for the stone fork, other wise you might need to get another GPS for the 6488 and use the loader for digging out the big stones.
I’d be quite tempted to fit out the 6480 with auto steer for the job but I want to try her out on the job 1st to see if she has the weight and traction to work it
@@FARMERPHIL3690 yeah worth doing as a test alright, id be surprised if it couldn't handle it. would give you more options as well. sure you could take it off 6290 once the slurry is done.
Take apart your bill hooks on the cd knotter it might be holding. I had a 128 mf little baler with the similar knotter. U need a mf tool to take apart to clean the spring inside...... I've made thousands same problem had to use my new hollow 68 that cuts and strips..... yours holds an the next bale strips strings
best thing to do with the area where the water is coming up in the new yard is to dig it out again and fill it with the big stones you got from the filed. don't bother putting in the fine stuff to bind it as the water will flow through the gaps the stones. The weight of the machinery passing over that area probably compresses everything too much to allow the water to flow.
@michaelhanley8425 I'm sure he did which makes everything he says false because there is no allowance for the cost of buying a tractor just he said the machine and diesel.
Great video Phil that’s what I love about you is your honesty there’s no bull you don’t hide anything you say it as it is

Tip silage trailers let water out
That's the joys of farming and contracting Phil, no 2 years are the same, twill come good yet 👍
