First let me say that I have been looking for this type of comparison for months. Your layout and test are spot on. ONE HUGE PROBLEM. Like other reviewers you picked the one of the WORST lenses that Canon makes. It can't even compete with the plastic $99 50mm 1:8 in sharpness.
He's using the 1.4 version on the Canon, which is ~$300. Still not a fair comparison at all. He should be using something like the Zeiss Otus 55 1.4 for the Canon and Sony.
Did you use the zoom on the Canon while using primes on the medium format and Sony? If so, a waste of a test. High end primes on them all is an even comparison. And the 5dsr was never made to shoot high ISO. So not surprising about that outcome. Funny how everyone loves Canon color science over Sony and you somehow got it the other way around.
Thanks for the test. Very useful information. I think, however, that you might have mentioned image stabilisation. When your'e off a tripod, it's very helpful.
There's a big problem with the Sony A7RII - it can't track moving subjects to save it's life and before anyone comments, I own the A7RII and it's the greatest camera I have ever used - except when it comes to tracking. Sony G lenses suffer from focus shifting i.e. the focus acquired when the lens is wide open shifts when the aperture closes to a smaller preset aperture. So they "solved" this issue, via a firmware update, by changing the focusing system. It now acquires a basic lock wide open, then closes to the preset aperture, refocuses and then tries to track. Unfortunately at f8 the awesome phase detection AF disables and the camera hunts like you wouldn't believe! I was using a 200mm lens at a fashion show and at under 30 feet the area of focus is less than 3 feet using f8. So to ensure I got the clothing sharp I set the aperture at f8 and my lens hunted and missed the focus time and time again! Remember, the models were walking at less than 5mph and it could even track that speed. I switched to my other telephotos, all top lenses and it happened with each and every one of them. Sony are aware of the problem and have been for over a year since they have been inundated with compaints about this.The majority of owners have requested a firmware update allowing a choice of focusing either wide open or closed - and they've done nothing. Don't believe me, try it and see what happens or if you haven't the time go on the net and look it up, you'll find lots of complaints on the subject. So if you want an awesome camera for motionless subjects get the A7RII but if you shoot subjects that move, forget it and buy a DSLR. One last thought... I was considering buying the new A9 and then I realised if Sony have wrecked the A7RII with this via the firmware what's to stop them doing it with the A9? Be wary buying either of them. In the meantime I and many thousands of others are stuck with a camera that's fine as long as what we shoot is basically dead and not moving until Sony get their finger out and fix the problem. One unhappy A7RII owner...
Thank you for your insightful comparison! BTW the smaller the pixel, the more pronounced the diffraction. SO, I suggest if you shoot Credo 50 @f10, do f8 on 35mm cameras.
OK this test is done with, how relevant will all this be once printed? Can you make a test where you make prints from all 3 to see how each file translates not prints from crops but from the full image ? The print is everything. My 2 cents, thank you
F10. FFS! I have had Rawon Sony A7Rii’s and a Canon 5DSr. The Sony is NOT sharper than the Canon, does not resolve as well and it’s colour is nowhere near as good, greens sometimes barely rescuable. That’s why they were traded out. High iso is better, true. BTW how much does a my system and lenses cost?! Seemed like a very biased and botched review.

mount the Zeiss Otus 85mm on all 3 and have exact same pose. but in all good quick comparison. the Sony A7Rii is truly amazing as its even matching and exceeding Sony's own medium format sensors and there aren't many medium format sensors out that could surpass it and justify the price tag to match. Canon is just terrible when compared to anything but it's self.
Sony hands down!!! And I wonder why you emphasize so much on the pressing of the wrong button... It's far more preferable to be more carefull, than paying 20 grands... Nice video though!!!
They are equivalent lenses. Standard 'normal' fixed focal on all of them. A lot of commenters have overlooked the fact you CANNOT mount a 35mm FF lens on a medium format.
@@Calibrepics No. It's not the fact you're not using the same lens. In the video I believe you're using either a zoom lens (which rarely, if ever, are as sharp as primes) or what appears to be a Canon 50 1.4, which also is not a sharp lens. You should have at least been using the Sigma 50 Art.
I'm going to have to disagree with you when it comes to these comparisons. MF lenses simply cannot compete with the best that is available for full frame. I've tested them extensively and there isn't a single lens from MF that beats the best from Full frame.

Remember that ISO 3200 becomes equal to 6400 when you add +1 with the exposure slider.
