We raise pork and laying hens, we often have people come to the farm asking for chicken. So I bought your plans and will be building them soon. We are looking forward to our latest enterprise on the farm.

Run an internal 45° 2x4 bracket on the inside corners. If you set a plywood bottom in it, it could double as a triangular free-choice feeder area for grit, oyster shell, etc. or a dustbath.

Just bought your chicken tractor plans! I made a Salatin style tractor and quickly realized that was not going to be fun. Great design - I’m headed to Home Depot now to grab some supplies

I bought my plans last year and FINALLY was able to build it this year. I took a few shortcuts but I am satisfied. I will follow the original plans 100% when I build my next one.

A hacksaw, a drill, and some 2" angle iron from the home center, and you can make all the angle brackets you need. Those a nice Chicken Tractors. We're building a Salatin style tractor for our 39 broilers, but It may get modified with the conduit like yours...

I have bought the book and I am about to get on with building my first one. I have been reviewing as many of your chicken tractor builds as possible so I can make the best one I can for the geography I live in. Thank you for creating the videos and sharing your lessons learned and top tips.

That’s so inspiring to hear Anne. I can’t wait to see what you come up with. So many people have made small modifications to suit their needs. It’s not about the RIGHT design, it’s about the right design FOR YOU.

@@farmmarketing I am once again reviewing my choice of rain and sun covering. The chinook winds that blow up from Montana and the US here into Alberta can be brutally destructive. A work colleague has suggested that I stick with the tarp. The idea of wriggly sheet metal flying across the prairie and slicing through stuff is enough to make me think the tarp is a better idea for now. If I feel the frame is sturdy enough I can always upgrade. I don’t see many of your tractors on the acreages where I live, but that is not to say they are there. I do like the idea of the birds free ranging, but protected from migatory birds and the H5N1 avian flu. Thank you for your comments, I have to get to the building next.

I ended up putting 4 wheels on mine. I have a bad back and 4 wheels makes my Suscovich tractor sooooo much easier to move

I want that too, but my hills may not allow 4 wheels,,,unless I spike it to the ground in my windy area (15-35mph)!!!

Hey John...I am interested in getting your book & instructions to build your chicken tractor as i like the design over many others but had a question...about how much will it cost if I buy all the materials for it?

For some reason those gussets must be made out of gold, they are pretty expensive. I just used a 4 inch “L” bracket from your hardware store on each inside and outside corner, all for the price of 1 gusset.

    • @Cripples23
      @Cripples23 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Future note, home depot sells the gussets for $0.98 not sure if you have one around you

    Hi John,
I am curious as to how you mitigate loss to bad weather. We've recently experienced high wind and heavy rain this past week and I've lost several chicks. I ended up having to bring them inside to stop anymore loss but it's only a temporary solution. I sent you a message on your website with more details but your advice and help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you and God bless,
    -RC

Hey John, I ordered the print version of your stress free chicken tractor plans 2 months ago and never received it. 2 weeks ago I ordered the download version so I could start building my chicken tractor immediately but I never received the plans. I'm out $24, what should I do?? I have tried to contact you by email but not received any response.

Bought the book and they are ok at best ! They are not very clear on the build ! You could have went in depth a little more on assembling the coop! Instead of just saying follow the pictures for assembling it!

John, I disagree with your design approach. I've got a similar chicken tractor that I built for under $300 and it uses far less wood. My design is from Vermont farm and uses bent EMT tubes that run all the way to the base and are not fixed at only one upper point like yours. This provides 2 points of stability, which is important when a strong wind is blowing. No need for expensive chicken wire to cover the whole upper part, let the tarp give the protection. Sure a raccoon could slice through, but I run an electrical fence wire around the base. Plus, what's with spending most of your vid speaking about an angle brace? Come on, it's cheaper and simpler to screw in from the top a 1/2" strip of wood at each corner for racking. My tractor has worked fine for years. Finally, while I like your removable back wheels, I would use wheels on both ends so you can pull it in both dorections.

Absolutely correct. Any brace is stronger & cheaper than that. The longer: the stronger.
