12:52 oh there is some historical context that explains this because there is nothing physical that causes the direction change, back a long time ago there was a stabling yard next to the MCG called Jolimont Yards and basically the idea was that in the morning trains from the suburbs would come in to the city, drop off as many people at the loop stations then terminate at flinders st then go to the yard, in the evening peak they would then go from the yard to flingers street, go around the loop in the opposite way they came (via the loop)so they can pick up as many people as possiable then head back out to the suburbs and till this day they haven't been bothered to change it however the Hurstbridge and mernda lines have been changed to stay in one direction for the whole day because of a crossover that would mean trains would cross over eachother, restricting thr frequencies, the cranbourne and packenham lines also changed to stay in one direction because the new trains (HCMTs) that where designed for the metro tunnel are to long for the city loop meaning they cant see the signal so they only moved the signal further back in one direction. Anyways, great video, would love to see you come back for the metro tunnel and hope this helps!!
16:22 this is a mueseum, behind the shop called rm williams there is a small museum, go into rm williams, then walk to the back of the shop and see a grey factory noise, and there a sign called "watch your head"
At 15:30 that's the Shot Tower, it was used to make shotgun shot. Molten lead would be dropped in the top and would fall through the water-filled tower.
I have fond memories of that pocket watch in melbourne central shopping centre. It plays a wonderful rendition of Waltzing Matilda. And I agree - an arcade is not complete without pinball machines! Fishtales, The Getaway - High Speed II and Terminator are my favourites.
That tall indoor building in Melbourne Central is the Coop's Shot Tower, built in 1889. Currently has the Williams store in it (shoe store), which is what that 1932 date on the sign is.
Melbourne central opened in the early 90s and had daimaru which was a Japanese department store as it's major store and that old building the shopping centre was built around it
G'day mate fantastic video of the city loop which we call it here in Melbourne I do train station review across the suburbs of Melbourne and yeah I will get to the city loop at some point but yours excellent really enjoyed it yes pretty old stations compared to the rest of the network
It's definitely interesting that the RBTU allowed driver only operation in Victoria (even with 20yo camera technology) but has been totally against it in NSW.
Years ago my job was to refill and empty the cash on all those coke and snack vending machines on the underground stations. Each platform had a bunch of them and it was definitely not fun to do during peak hour.
You should have kept walking down past the Lego store, that would have taken you to the Swanston Street entrances. You didn’t walk out the Swanston street side of Melbourne Central which is arguably the main entrance to see how it connects to all the Swanston Street Tram lines (8 of them), new tram stops on LaTrobe Street (large and fully accessible) and the new State Library Station

Still a little hazy but great explainer! lol I’ll definitely be back for the new metro stations
It’s always great seeing a different perspective on our city
You should visit the Metro Tunnel stations when they open!
I most definitely will be! 😃
2:37 "MURL Emergency Trolley" - cool I've never noticed that before, looks like some kind of folded up trolley chained to a pole.
great video i love learning more about my city!

Definitely checking it out next time I’m in town
@ nice! if ur not able, my channel has got you

Twilight Zone, mediaeval madness, theatre of magic, they are my favourite 90’s games 😁

Thanks for clearing that up, wow the building is even older than I thought

Thanks mate! Appreciate the kind words. I’m definitely someone who enjoys watching train content on TH-cam, I’ll subscribe to your channel right now
Nice video and content. Not a metro system though - wish it was
It’s still more of a metro than what Brisbane has with their metro buses 😂👏🏻
Sydney does have screens but they are for the guard principally at wollstonecraft and sydenham for the tangaras.
Ha! Interesting I wasn’t aware

Coop's Shot Tower is a heritage listed site and when the redevelopment was completed at Melbourne central they incorporated the building into the site
Makes sense, and what a fantastic job they did!
That park on top of Flagstaff station used to be a cemetery and lookout over docklands for invading ships in tbe 1800s
Wow! Very interesting

the first metro tunnel opened in 1981 i thought it was 1991 but there you go

I did 😄 I just ended up cutting a bunch of footage. Cool place hey! I wish Sydney had more trams
We all think that is is about 30% of a system. It needs a major upgrade. Its no Barcelona, Madrid, London, Paris, Munich or Berlin
just so you know the city loop was opened in the 1980s and the 1st station was museum which is now known as Melbourne central
In the future I might be going to Melbourne
You should hey, It’s awesome!
There were underground toilets at central i cant remember when they were closed
Flagstaff is my fav
I hope they never chnage any of them
Need a major refurb, even if it doesn't change that much. Sydney's Wynyard and Town Hall are much improved after substantial refurbs
The second 'a' in Flagstaff is long
I don’t understand?
@@TallBoyGareth Flagst-ah-ff. Although I noticed all your a's are short. You've got a bit of a unique accent.
Egg!
Probably not the best idea to take cameras into public toilets.
No one’s face was shown, it’s all good 😉
