The problem with this boss is that everything is so random. That shitty charge attack sometimes even oneshotted me at 60 vigor with 58% phisical reduction. And there is no reliable way of dodging it. I had to try like twenty times and had literally zero fun

I actually enjoyed him! It may be that it's just the deflect tear making any boss fun. His charge is bonkers though, but the rest of his moveset I think is quite good
I was lucky because I have a Dex build but even with the ability of hitting fast combos it was a really tough fight but not in a cool way like Rellana or Messmer

Best way that I've found is to dodge at roughly 1 o'clock. It gets you through the head hitbox and can usually get you around the leg ones. Unless the game decides to not let you do that because this fight is shamefully bad.

This boss could've been an A tier, fun boss fight if it was just the commander himself. But no... they had to give him that stupid hog. This boss is dumb, probably the worst boss in the DLC next to the Elder Inquisitor with his holy magic spam bs. Greatsword + giant hunt saved me here
This fight is basically; Get lucky, and bring something over powered. Like, imagine willfully avoiding using Bleed weapons, or using a Ash that Isn't the mimic tear? I can. Cuz my current character is a Blackflame theme, using black flame weapons, incants, and Blackflame Monk Amon Ash. The Ash lasted all of about 40 seconds, either died or lost a significant portion of my health being animation locked summoning him. After about 15 attempts and only getting him halfway down, I decided to look up a cheese cuz fuck this guy and his shit balancing. They clearly wanted it to be a horseback battle, but Gaius is faster than Torrent, can turn on a dime, will either dismount you in one hit, or kill torrent in two, with an AoE the size of Caelid. A bullshit fight that clearly needs nerfed to at least be possible by builds other than Light or Medium load, with Bleed or Frostbite.
My biggest issue with the boss so far is how useless Torrent is aside from dodging the big AOE from phase 2. It's seemingly impossible to get away from the hog charge with Torrent because of how good it tracks. On top of that Torrent gets knocked down really easily in phase 2, and I think it would've helped if they finally gave him some armor to tank a few more hits. I'm guessing the "solution" to this is to heal Torrent with berries, but you'll probably also need to heal yourself if Torrent got hit. I found it cheap that Gaius gets this hog with sick armor while we're stuck using a naked Torrent lol. Even Tree Sentinels get armor! I feel like this is an oversight...
As a bonk STR build( also tried on my dex build) , I even found this guy annoying. besides Radahn Laser light show. Gauis definately takes the cake for most shittiest boss in this DLC.
You have to roll directly into him??? Why is it you can't dodge AWAY from his charge. Like to the side. Instead you have to phase through him? god thats dumb.
you can jump to the side over him and roll to the sides if u time it right but in general i feel like there is barely enough s to even roll through him 100% consistently this fight is dumb as hell
@@Ahrths I beat him but I had to be almost frame perfect on that charge. The key was to stay close to him and he won’t charge anymore than the opening one, once you can dodge his ten hit combo reliably and punish him when he does any of the gravity attacks you got him easily. I did it with a medium equip load using the two magma blade curved swords.
Took way more than 20 tries, using Tyrannicon’s cheese, a Minic with Maliketh’s Black Blade, me using Sacred Relic Sword, rotten breath, dragon ice and lots of suffering… and I finally beat it
For anyone who thinks the charge is undodheable: get on horseback and run backwards alongside Gaius, he will never reach you and its a guaranteed dodge + punish. Alterrnatively, you can use raptors of the shadows for some sick dodges
Nope, my game works differently, if i try to roll towards him he just omegastomps me. Anyway he gives me no break, i can't attack, i can't summon, i can't drink. Never. Moreover, he kills me in two hits when i'm lucky. It's impossible.

A boss that was probably made to use mounts in his fight, but there's one problem, the Elden ring's mounted battle system is some of the worst shit ever invented.

I found this boss pretty easy on horse back i think he is designed to be fought on torrent you can jump over attacks torrents dash is also fast enough to get out of the way of his faster attacks

And as you see at 0:14 it’s still not a completely reliable way to dodge him. The dodge looks perfectly timed yet he still gets hit.
