    Love the content but think some trunking and an isolator would do wonders here.

    • @dsesuk
      @dsesuk  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Have to agree with you there, and it's one job where I wasn't entirely happy with the physical appearance at the end (a rare case where trunking would actually look better). The scope of works was for one-off, one-on, but when the boots were on the ground I made the snap decision to relocate it to make it more accessible. That rather added to the work and the van hadn't been stocked with the necessary materials, but sometimes you make a call on-the-go for what seems the right reason only to stand back at the end and think it would have been better if...

    • @dannyboisparky
      @dannyboisparky 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for a reply David, I thought as much being the ledge that you are and totally agree with your decision to relocate for accessibility. It is in a garage after all and doesn’t need to look like a work of art, unless you’re attracting clients that enjoy staring at brick walls

      Yes trunking would have been much better - and a main isolator fitted. Trunking always makes a job look more professional looking. Customers are impressed. Also a quicker job overall. Just put the cables inside the trunking once the trunking is up with holes drilled in. Trunking could have gone down the right of the meter near the soil stack, then over the top of the CU. Trunking is quick to fit. Trunking looks more professional when you have an angle saw to get the nice snug fit 45 degree cuts.

      Surface work should always look good. Personally I would have considered removing the ugly old fashioned wooden board. The cable from the main DNOs mainfuse into trunking above it, with a main isolator and the meter's cables running in and out of trunking not seen, or little of it seen.

    Hi David and co. Regarding dual busbar boards, the French have been using them for years. 20 years ago I rewired my house in France and the board had dual busbars and double pole MCBs. The incoming supply had a 100mA RCD included and the board was protected with a 30mA RCD. The village was supplied from a 3 phase supply with the houses supplied from 2 phases giving 230V. This meant that the conductor used as the neutral wasn't really neutral! Single pole switched lights still had dangerous voltages on the "neutral" The village supply has all been changed now to something more sensible! I am a keen DIY / Electrical and Electronic Engineer and think your videos are great. I have learned a lot from guys like you on TH-cam. Keep up the good work, and the banter!!

    • @dsesuk
      @dsesuk  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I hear dual busbar is common on the continent so I'm not sure why manufacturers do it differently for the UK. Dual busbar makes a lot more sense to me!

    • @dsesuk
      @dsesuk  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Some decent trunking would have looked better, but originally it was just supposed to be a like-for-like swap rather than a relocation job. One of those on-the-fly ideas that maybe didn't work out as aesthetically as it could have.

      @@dsesuk so why did you not mount the db in place of the old instead of jointing all the cables and also why does the db have to be metal with a plastic adapter box above as a joint.

    • @dsesuk
      @dsesuk  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@scottsparky1 The whole plastic thing is a nonsense in my opinion Scott, but it only applies to switchgear and even then not to DNO equipment, so the DNO can install an isolator in a plastic box, but if I put one in it's supposed to be metal. My NIC assessor had me on that recently as I'd installed a KMF switch on a domestic property. It was inside the coal hole so not actually inside the property as such, but he did me for it not being metal. I don't know why I decided to make life more difficult by relocating it, I just felt it would be better for it to be more accessible.

    So the wiring there is presumably approaching 60 years of age? Any thoughts on when/if one should recommend a complete re-wire on the basis of future viable lifespan? Or do you feel the IR readings and/or any Earth-leakage tests is sufficient to gauge servicibility?

    • @dsesuk
      @dsesuk  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to take each installation on its merits of course and make an engineering determination. In this case, nobody had messed with the wiring since the original build, with the exception of the cooker circuit modified to a socket endpoint by the new owner, so it was all as-built and pretty solid. The endpoints need refreshing; new lights, new socket outlets, but the new owner doesn't have plans to make many modifications outside of the kitchen. We could rip out and start again, but it's good copper, the insulation is bearing out, no major changes are planned, so why go to the expense?

    SBS is *two* busbars Line and Neutral. The Continental makes like, LeGrande, Garo and Schneider have _twin_ busbars where the L & N are all in one unit. Schneider call it a comb. Any good reason for putting the garage on a B16 rather than a B20?
    I feel you missed a trick with moving the board; when I'm doing that sort of upgrade I get it mounted, connect up all the extension pieces and get as much as possible sorted before having the juice off. Saves half of the working by torchlight and the customer asking when they can have a cuppa etc
    I like the SBS dual busbar concept but am yet to be converted, mainly because you can only get it from one place and if it's not me who's there next somebody's gonna have trouble adding another circuit if they haven't prepared properly

    • @dsesuk
      @dsesuk  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Usually, we perform all the mechanicals first and only pull the plug at the last minute, but here the homeowner was away. No real reason for the garage being on a 16 instead of a 20; the demand in use there is unlikely to really tickle either. The one-source issue could be a risk, but SBS have been around for a few years and the gear is made by DL who produce other brands such as LIVE. If they go belly-up, there'll be a few pointing and laughing at me, but I don't see them being any worse risk than other manufacturers such as CP Fusebox.

    We have had similar single mod rcbo's with a dual bus-bar connection in Ireland for a while but because of the small connections in the bus-bar the biggest cable that fits into the bus-bar is 6mm panel flex with bootlace ferrules so you can only fit a few rcbo's rated at 20 amp or smaller on one dual bus-bar not to overload the 6mm, that does not seem to be a problem with the SBS board the pictures or the SBS board are never clear enough to see how the bus-bar connects to the main switch, they do not sell the single mod rcbo's with the blue neutral lead in Ireland which is a pity they seem a good idea

    As a consumer the last thing I would want would be a CU which in practice is sourced by only a few electricians. I have just had a new gas boiler fitted and I insisted that the plumber installed a Baxi purely because I know that in 10 years time I will be able to get spares for it from a variety of sources whereas it might be a lot more difficulot for the European unit he was offering as being better value.

Cannot see your logic which does not accept this when you can still run a single 2.5 t&e from ANYWHERE IN THE RING which I am sure you have done BEFORE on many occasions. I have left comments before all good may I add but another video springs to mind where you had difficulty grasping the guy which used for want a better word the leap frog method of wiring the ring and branded the guy an antiquated old sparky when in fact this is a very common method and even e-fix on u-tube say this is the best method for load sharing .I served the Full Apprenticeship inclusive of the CITB Training.

    • @dsesuk
      @dsesuk  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'm not saying it's wrong jj, simply that it's not in the spirit of Appendix 15. In this case, it's a 2.5mm on a 30A fuse serving multiple sockets which doesn't meet what Appendix 15 allows. A spur is a spur, whereas a new circuit serving multiple outlets in 2.5mm on a 30/32A supply is not a spur, it's a break against the design criteria we're supposed to apply. There's no difficulty grasping anything at this end, it's all listed in black and white in BS7671.

      This installation is on the same estate as my gaff John so I'm familiar with when it went in. This land was bought from the brewery that owned it (curiously enough) in the mid-Sixties and these properties were thrown up at the end of that decade. Some still only have three circuits, cooker, lights and sockets and 60A supplies. My own den-of-shame is stuck at 60A which is why I had to install the Garo priority unit to load share between my shower and EV charger.

      HMG wants us to all go all electric. Who pays to upgrade the electrical supplies. 60A is way too low a limit. Third world.
      A gas combi boiler, just a small box on the wall, pushes out the kW for DHW delivery. W Bosch have a *50kW* model! This is 217 amps if it was electric. A domestic gas meter can supply approx 62kW.
      To get say 35kW of instant electrical DHW, you need 152 amps. So a three phase supply is really needed. The max on single phase is 11.5 kW, which will give less than half of a small gas combi in litres/min DHW delivery. Although you could double them up then draw 98 amps, to get decent DHW flow rates
      Looks like electrical DHW will be stored hot water, which takes up space. Space not available in flats. Progress they say.
      But SunAmp make small thermal stores giving instant mains pressure hot water. They are _smallish,_ they store heat in a gell not water. A DHW take off coil is inside. Also aerated Raindance shower heads only draw 9 litres/min mixed. An excellent advance. Expensive but they help.
      The point is the electrical systems are too small for modern homes, even flats. Minimum of 150 amps is needed.
      Who pays to update the supply to your meter, because HMG are forcing this on us?

      A year on. AFDDs are now here, _mandatory_ in some situations. The three circuits Dave mentioned came to mind - and hence the good old reliable final ring circuit popped up.
      A guy I know was renovating his two bedroomed flat, that needs an AFDD on any circuit with a socket on it, as per regs. He was talking to me about it. His budget was not big so had to keep expenses to a minimum when pushed. He has a gas combi so heating and hot water is not an issue. The cost of a number of expensive AFDDs was troubling him. so I made suggestions.
      *1)* Have all the flat on one final 32A ring circuit;
      *2)* Lights on one 3A DP RCBO;
      *3)* Buy the Bosch hob model that has a 13A plug on it (their specs confusingly say it is 16A), on a 4mm cable from the CU;
      *4)* The 3kW (13A) oven taken off the same 4mm cable as the hob;
      *5)* Oven and hob have 20A isolator switches in adjacent cupboard hard wired in (no socket so no AFDD).
      *6)* The oven & hob cable is on a 32A DP RCBO;
      So, *three circuits:*
      *i)* Sockets on a 32A AFDD;
      *ii)* Lights on a 3A DP RCBO;
      *iii)* Oven & hob on a 32A DP RCBO.
      So, if there is a problem on any circuit, overcurrent, fault, or earth leakage, only that circuit trips out. Sockets have the added arc protection.
      This also means a cheap smaller CU unit, that takes up little space. I told him the ring may be unbalanced when high current white appliances in the kitchen are all drawing current. I suggested having the ring in 4mm, the oven & hob on 4mm and the lights 1.00mm. This meant it was cheaper for cable as big drums of 4mm cable are cheaper per metre. But he needed a small amount of flex 2.5mm cable.
      I told him to have 32A Wagos at the back of the socket boxes that take the rings 4mm cable load, not using the sockets terminals as junction boxes. So from the Wagos, the 4 inch long flex 2.5mm cable is taken to the sockets making each socket a spur, and easy to push into the backbox. The 4mm is now static. The socket then only draws current when it is switched on and no more than 13 amps on the terminals at the rear. Even if the ring is cut in half, the 4mm will not overheat.
      Look at the Continental setup. There will be a plethora of breakers in the large CU and expensive cable all over the flat serving the radials.
      This works a treat. Very safe as well. All due to the ingenious simplicity of the final ring circuit, which creates a cable busbar around the flat. We do not need circuits for the sake of circuits.

      I used 25mm Flexi-tails on the SBS board I installed the prior week and even then couldn't get them through the clamp. The bend radius from the knockout through the clamp is too tight for 16mm tails or 25mm flexi-tails. It *is* physically possible to do, but hard work to no advantage, and one generally has to employ pliers to make the bends which risks damaging the insulation. For me, the tails clamp is bin-fodder every time. The design simply doesn't work as-is.

      I don't think he's dead, although I do suspect he may be in prison. This 'holiday' followed by sick leave just sounds like he's been sent down for something and is trying to cover himself until his parole comes up.

    Great video regards diy and not selling to public as a safety concern that's brilliant, so let's also stop the Sunday DIY mechanics from buying steering racks and brake components unless they are qualified mechanics, all my electrician m8s will love that one as they love cars.

    • @dsesuk
      @dsesuk  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Personally, I'm not one of those who calls for the likes of B&Q to be unable to sell CUs to the great unwashed, but there are some out there who want to see that happen. For them SBS provide what they want - a trade-only option that you really can't shonk another brand's wares into.

    • @gino2465
      @gino2465 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dsesuk that's fair, but I know many electricians who work on their 4 wheeled vehicles, and do mechanics think they should not work on crucial vehicle systems. Many electricians are well capable of doing any jobs, what people forget I suppose is a vehicle could wipe out a coach load of people on a motorway. Do i think brake and steering parts should be banned from sale unless you join the mechanic club.

      It's a fine line Henry, and I say that as someone who volunteers at a repair cafe where I, along with others, attempt to bumble through repairs of various toys, furniture and appliances. As someone who learned a lot from pulling things apart as a kid, I don't think DIY should be discouraged or that all DIY is bad, but I've just seen so much that is iffy to the point where blind luck has often been the only thing that's saved the day. I don't want to stop anyone from having a go, but I do want to highlight the potential implications. And make it awkward for them, as that's just good for business!
