"Carnival!" was the first Broadway musical I ever saw. My friend's mother took me along on his eleventh birthday outing - just the three of us. We came into Manhattan from the suburbs. We sat in the center of the front row of the orchestra - I was blown away - I can still remember the opening - a bear on a bicycle with a little ballerina sitting on the handlebars and the roustabouts setting up the tent in the center of the stage. Just writing this now, I'm amazed at how much I can recall from that performance. I bought the album and learned the lyrics to all of the songs. Have always felt a special feeling for Anna Maria Alberghetti, Kaye Ballard, Jerry Orbach and James Mitchell, ever since - and I've seen them so often in other productions. It was a wonderful experience. I still have my souvenir program! I'm 65 - I was probably 12, then.
She has many memories of her long career, but her heart will always go to her family, where she enjoyed her greatest happiness and deepest love. The interviewer needed to let her speak more, interrupted her too many times.
What was essential to making Carnival! work was a sensational singer, who could convey total innocence. You had to believe that the character had a child like nature. Hard to get that right. Impossible to get that today because the world in so different, and so cynical. She had it at that time.
