    i did record this video from Discovery with a TV card in my computer many years ago, this is why it so grainy. It was in the good old days when Discovery was good...

    The K 10,000 is an impressive tower crane. To bad it can't match a barge crane with over 1000 tons of lifting power. To lift big ships out of the water when they have wrecked

    I love the smaller tower crane on top of the big one.

    Tower cranes do fail and they can be blown over. We had one come down during a hurricane here in Halifax, Nova Scotia. A month later and they are still trying to get it off of the building it fell onto.

    09:18 An alternator is a generator. The terminology changes where it's used and whether the armature is a perm magnet but they are essentially the same thing.

    • @dennisleslie8962
      @dennisleslie8962 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      An Alternator is not a Generator. They are not the same thing.
      An Alternator produces Alternating Current (AC). A Generator produces Direct Current (DC).
      AC has to be rectified to give DC. DC has to be inverted to give AC.
      This is high school stuff. Google is a good teacher, though.

    • @salia2897
      @salia2897 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dennisleslie8962 Alternator seems just to be a more specific term, generator being the more general form. Not an English native speaker, but that is, what wikipedia says. DC generators and AC generators also work on the same principles, so would be strange to not have a general term for both of them.

    • @dennisleslie8962
      @dennisleslie8962 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@salia2897 like i said...Alternating current "generators" are called Alternators, and DC generators are simply known as Generators.
      I've been around much longer than Wikipedia, so I do not need them to define for me. Knowledge existed long before Wikipedia, as good as Wiki is for those lacking knowledge and seeking same.
      And, of course, a rose by any other name....
      But when one wants to write about technical things one must endeavour to use appropriate technical terms.
      Cheers.

    • @salia2897
      @salia2897 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dennisleslie8962 Well, you obviously "lack knowledge" as you do not even know everything that is in Wikipdia. The arrogance against the use of Wikipedia is just outdated stupidity.
      Encyclopaedia Britannica defines Generator the same way ( www.britannica.com/technology/electric-generator ). It is just the general term for a device turning mechanical into electrical energy. Nothing about only DC. DC/AC/Three-Phase whatever.

    That mobile Liebherr can lift 250 tons, yet the Kroll K10 000, being the world's biggest tower crane, can only lift 240 tons. Was that someones typo for this program, or does the Liebherr mobile crane be the world's heaviest lifter?

    • @4jp
      @4jp 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The numbers are correct, but misleading. The amount of lift is dependent on how far you want to go from the crane. Max lift is really close to the center. Neither is that impressive now. Mobile cranes can lift over 1000 tons now (both metric and imperial). The heaviest ever lift was completed by a gantry crane that lifted over 20,000 metric tons (44,000,000 pounds).

    Those are NOT "Jibs".
    Those are BOOMS, and cranes sometimes have a Jib attached to the tip of the boom.
    A Jib is a light extension added to a Boom to provide longer reach, but can only be used for very light loads.
    I wish the makers of these videos would research their subject and get it right.
    Stop calling Booms "Jibs"; stop calling Locomotives "Trains", etc. Remember that you are trying to educate and therefore must not spread ignorance.

    Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view!"
    Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam."
    Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!"
    Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..."
    Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!"
    Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky."
    Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction."
    Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment?"

      Really dumb to stand under a load, PERIOD! Tag line or not makes no difference.
      When handling tag lines you stand away from the load, not under it.
