@Leaf Hey there - can you possibly add my clip to your reel? I was able to play the role of Quasimodo at my former high school , The King’s Academy, as an alumni. I certainly don’t think I’ll be the best on this reel, but I certainly am not the worst. th-cam.com/video/q3NERaUYmLU/w-d-xo.html
Caleb Adams hey i’m so late! but i’ve been obsessed w your school recently!! i would love to add ur clip but that involves me having to reupload and i don’t wanna do that. but if u ever have anything u want me to include dm me on instagram @strikefoul
Thank you everyone for your kind words on my performance! Its an honor just to be included with these other guys haha. I'll hold onto my "worlds only baritone Quasimodo" award though lol!
It's not just about the note it's about what is around it The voice in some of them is so flat and dissengaged that the note just feels impactless Arden for example has a whole acting technique behind his singing, so the note feels like an emotional climax Wanna know who else is amazing at it??Mark Mitriano, and he is pretty fucking young
MY 2 CENTS Agree, we are doing this play at our high school, and our Quasimodo is a college student, who is amazing, and bring lots of emotion to help the belch. It’s quite remarkable
My personal favorites, though everyone did awesome!!!! 0:00, 0:19 Michael Arden, the OG, best overall, best first lines, best acting 1:22, 1:42 Rich Giordano, really good "I" note 2:04, 2:20 F Michael Haynie, I really love the way he says "out there," great vibrato 2:41, 3:01 Brady Love, best "were made of stone" (3:08), and personal fave, other than Michael ofc 3:29, 3:42 Kyle Dalsimer, clearest "I" note, him and Rich sound very similar, I like it 4:57, 5:15 E.J. Cardona, really emotional and powerful, also love Joshua Castille's acting so much 7:08, 7:28 Bobby Cassell, grittiest "I" note 7:52, 8:08 Jack Cappadona, second best vibrato 9:04, 9:20 Julian Decker, best vibrato, also that C, Jesus 9:40, 9:56 Rick Desloge, second clearest "I" note, awesome C
@@anygameatanytimetime8995 Amen! OG! It is to laugh. Drew was there singing his heart out creating the theatrical role literally decades before any of the talented singers here even knew this specific song existed. And he sang the last note in the stratosphere where it belongs, sounding young and vulnerable (unlike Arden--who is extremely gifted as a singer but whose voice is not one of a sheltered, frightened, broken young man--more like a Phantom than Quasimodo). Drew also pours out his soul more than any of this batch (good though many of them were) even when we don't have the benefit of seeing him as clearly due to the poor video quality. Finally, the last note is meant to be a _cri de coeur_ for Quasi and Drew manages to sound both beautiful and ugly, pure and bitter, vulnerable and furious. It's a fantastic performance.
@@kirajlerner I just went and watched Drew's version. It's very good! However, I think as to whether he or Arden is better has to do with personal preference. Personally, I like Arden's rich, resonating voice. It makes it more believable when he says "I am very strong" to Frollo at the end. Quai is a big guy, and a bit of a deeper, fuller voice fits that to me. Again, personal preference, but I prefer the last "stone" to be the lower note instead of the soft, high one Drew did (which highlights, as you said, his youth and vulnerablity). However, imo to go from the high note to this low one is powerful because it sounds as if Quasimodo has given up his innocent, joyful way of viewing the world, and is resolutely "grounding" himself, resigning himself to the tragedy of life. And the almost guttural sound from this note fit Quasi's grief and despair imo.
Michael Arden is the first live Quasimodo I've ever heard. My heart says he wins the Quasi Crown. Everyone else is freaking phenomenal, so I can't consider them as runner-ups or losers. I sing Made of Stone many times a week because I love it so much, and my voice is *gone.*
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS Nobody can beat Michael Arden in my eyes, but some of these are pretty good!!! My other favorites: Brady Love, Kyle Dalsimer, Unnamed Quazi (love the ASL addition), Bendon McCray, David K Larson (reminds me a lot of Arden), Rick Desloge (BEST version of high note opt) HMs for Bobby Cassell and Julian Decker, those high notes were INSANITY.
@@willberger3873 I made the mistake of attempting the note straight-tone for the first time on our taped show, haha. Here's a better example where the note isn't flat: th-cam.com/video/EQEFg2DBzJo/w-d-xo.html I'm also a legit baritone so that Bb nearly killed me every night xD (joking)
@@heatherrockwell9012 You are absolutely right, he is a beast in musical theatre and owns almost every performance. I said mostly because I only watched records from stage performances where he used falsetto or light headvoice. However, there was one public event where he belted it deliciously.
quin1989 Ah, okay. I’ve mostly heard the soundtrack, where he starts in headvoice and does a fade-in thing, which I also find impressive because doing that smoothly is really hard
tbh, micheal arden's acting, jack reeves's voice, f micheal haynie's grit, brady love's power, unamed quazi's vibrato, EJ Cardonna and Josh Castille's emotion, Bendon Mccray's clarity, David K Larson's sustain, Bobby Cassell's belt, Jared Babuschak's hunch, Julian Decker's C, Rick Disolge's C as well
Michael Arden for me is the best of the best Quasimodo portrayals, but there are two that should be given a nod for outstanding portrayals as well: Christian Santiago of TKA’s Page Family Center for the Arts, West Palm Beach (believe it or not, a high school production, but watch and be amazed!) and an actor who first portrayed the character in a raw, complex style in the German version of Hunchback. I think his was the very first production of the live musical. I will link both in com boxes below. Watch for Chris Santiago to go places in the future. While in high school he won an award from society that works to preserve jazz. I have no doubts this young person is going to be a well known singer.
You should really check out the German singers of the contemporary version, especially Milan van Waardenburg. Almost all of them opt up to the high C at the end like Decker does, but in better vocal quality and control. The older version with Drew Sarich (he was on Broadway as well but started in Germany/Austria) also has a very nice ring to it with a very quiet high C in head voice at the end. Definitely worth checking out!
Oh my gosh, I WISH with my WHOLE being that there was a recording of it at the Fulton Theatre with Nathaniel Hackmann last year. His performance was absolutely breathtaking and I honestly preferred it to the best, Michael Arden.
Leaf I don’t! It makes me so sad! There’s a version (th-cam.com/video/3amDuWku7eU/w-d-xo.html ) of him singing it for a promo, but it’s nowhere near what it was for the performance. Here’s him singing for the sitzprobe: instagram.com/p/BlIu_q4jz9I/?igshid=1ar544547k933 . I still think the show version was better haha. Here’s him singing for the City Center Encores production of Paint Your Wagon: th-cam.com/video/IGbzPTeXPb0/w-d-xo.html . He was also the standby for Jean Valjean on Broadway! Here’s a little snippet: th-cam.com/video/V9CHzfnk9Xc/w-d-xo.html . He’s currently on tour with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as Veruca’s father! It was a great show!
personally, no one can beat michael arden, he's super! but i like the brady love version of quasimodo. seriously, he make quasimodo hot and cute in the same time! and his voice is heaven.
Julian Decker with that opt up?! Are you KIDDING me???? Best 5 were: Michael Arden, Brady Love, Jared Babuschak (sp?), Bobby Cassell, and Julian Decker.
I wish someone got a recording of the production I saw. It's usually always localish people, but MY GOD everyone was so good. Quasi sent me a recording of this song for my birthday :) I still haven't seen an equivalent to Hellfire. It hurts to say, but he was even better than Patrick Page.
even if the compsition was different i prefer that version because it fit the tone better and had more effect (to those reading this that dont know, they do the high note option but it starts quiet then builds up to a loud climatic end... which at that point in the musical fits perfectly, giving it a pretty dark and eerie tone.)
Only the last two performers were able to achieve the notes the way they were originally performed by Drew Sarich in 1999's Der Glockner von Notre Dame, the more superior version of the musical, imo. Watch the way he does the song. That's the ultimate performance. It feels like almost everyone in this compilation is singing at the song. They aren't really letting the audience absorb the words Quasimodo is saying in that moment. He is giving up. I also HATE how musicals nowadays make the accompaniment speed through the material at a particular tempo the entire way through. No time is given for true emotion the way they used to in songs like If I Can't Love Her and A Change in Me in BATB, and Music of the Night in Phantom. Or even Wicked, when it's on tour. It's all rushed. Everyone has to just sloooow down a little with some of these pieces
