One of my favorite memories as a child was playing Pinball with my dad if I was ever home from school. He worked so much that I didn’t see him much at all. But those were such fun times. I actually bought it again a few years ago so we could play it again. That’s why it means so much to me. Great memories! Thank so much for the video!
Unfortunately I wasn't playing any of these in 1985 as it was launched solely in New York. The rest of the US got it later- mid to late 1986 for the Chicago area. As this time was pre-internet, I would speculate most of us didn't even know about it until it launched in our areas. SMB was definitely the killer app on its release and that was why I wanted it (and indeed received the Control Deck for Christmas- no Zapper here).
+Qun Mang You know, I thought I remembered getting the NES for Christmas of 1986, but I wasn't sure, because it was so long ago. Being a Minnesotan, it makes sense that it wasn't until 1986.
Played a ton of golf back in the day, and yo be honest it’s still a lot of fun today. But even if you don’t like golf, here’s a game worked on by Miyamoto, Iwata and Koji Kondo. Worth having for that reason alone.
Amongst my peers the NES hype peaked around 1988/89 in Germany. So there were already a lot of games available for the system. Guess the most popular games within my clique were SMB 2, Mega Man 2, Zelda, Spike V‘Ball, Ballon Fight, Turtles 1/2, Burai Fighter, Battle of Olympus, Snake Rattle n Roll, RC Pro Am, Hyper Soccer, Chip & Chap, Metroid, Kid Ikarus, Double Dragon 2. Oh my god, all those great multiplayer sessions. And then came Street Fighter 2 on SNES… 😳
As a little league baseball player along with my brother, I have a special place in my heart for the original Baseball on the NES. Almost four decades later, I bet my bro and I would still enjoy a game against eachother.
From my own research asking friends and family in California, most people don't seem to remember much, if anything, about the Nintendo until 1987-1988. I think very few people had it in the home in 1985, in fact even at it's height in 1988-90 it was only in 27-30% of American homes, even less in Great Britain and Europe, obviously these figures are approximate and some sources have different percentages but there all close. I remember getting an NES in 1990 and then a year later my mom being mad we were asking for a super Nintendo the very next year lol have a great day everyone
Got my NES in Xmas of 1987. Until then, I think I was still an Atari kid. Saw a Mike Tyson’s Punchout commercial and was OBSESSED with getting a Nintendo after that. Bugged my parents for months to make sure I got it for Xmas. Was not disappointed at all. Great memories. BTW, you just went right past golf. It was, and still is, a solid game. Little League Baseball was probably my all time favorite. Maybe Punchout is tied with it.
We got the NES with both the zapper and the robot at the time back in 1985. I’ve played a lot of Kung Fu, was laughed at by the dog and built crazy tracks on Excite Bike. My brother played that baseball game a lot as well. But, Super Mario Bro was the juggernaut of an instant classic that made us all moving the controller along with Mario. 😂😂😂
I didn't get a NES until Christmas of 1987. I played the crap out of SMB. It is hard, but I beat it when I was 8 or 9. Played it again on the Switch this year and it is tough, but not too bad thanks to Save States.
I broke out the NES recently and cleaned the pins and my cartridges. Played some StarTropics, Double Dragon II, and Dr Mario. Then I threw in Wild Gunman as I’d never played it before. I actually really enjoyed that!
!!!!Nostalgia at its finest!!!! When you showed the pic of the PogoBall, coincidentally, someone in my neighborhood was cutting a ton of onions.. 😢😭😿 ... love love love your "the year was" series. So many memories 😊 Each video makes me more proud to be a gamer of that time (back when being in "nerd culture" was not celebrated as it is now). Eagerly awaiting the next one!!!
It is interesting to see how fast games on the NES evolved. But SMB and the gimmick games (Light gun/ROB) aside, the release slate of games makes the NES feel like "a more powerful Atari". NES came a long way once developers figured out how to use it.
Where I live, the Family Computer arrived in 1984. Played a few games at a rental shop or when my cousin brought his FamiCom over to my house. The NES became available in 1986 and one year later, I received one as a gift plus a box of 32 games (most of them second-hand). Those games were Super Mario Bros, Double Dribble, Gradius, Castlevania, Mega Man, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Rygar, Top Gun, Ghosts 'n Goblins, Pro Wrestling, Kung Fu, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, Contra, Kid Icarus, Renegade, 1942, Section Z, Elevator Action, Rad Racer, Excitebike, Kid Niki, Karnov, Wizards & Warriors, Athena, Commando, Ikari Warriors, The Legend of Kage, Arkanoid, Spy Hunter, Jaws, and Popeye. My NES (and many more games) kept me entertained until 1994 when it went to video game heaven. My next console would be the PS1 in 1997.
1:47 Those are Zelda sprites from BEFORE Zelda (1986 in Japan). The rupees are obvious, but the less obvious are the snout-less octoroks with a palate swap. Kinda neat how these are both considered long time staples in Zelda whilst their origins are actually from an earlier, obscure NES title.
Great video, The NES is the one console I have never owned but those games look great. I live in the UK so at that time it was the home computer golden age. I had a BBC Micro at that time. Then an Amiga.
All these different games you mentioned brings me back to having to trade titles with other kids at school and in my neighborhood because I damn sure was not able to get all the games myself. Do kids still do that now? Is that even possible now? My kid plays games on the computer. Just another way we had to be more socially connected back then I guess.
Naw they dont trade games no more. Most buy their games digitally and download them straight to their systems. Trading games was one of the best thing about video games growing up lol
Nothing can beat Wrecking Crew in my book. Scratching that destructive itch while letting you create your own levels? Sign me up. Can't forget to mention that music too so much goodness in that one. Enjoyed the video as always John!
I really want to like Clu Clu Land, but it's just so awkward to control. However, I do like Ice Climber, even with those controls. It feels so fun to collect those vegetables at the end of each level.
I was born in 81 and got my nes when i was 10 but i played super Mario bros duck hunt after a bit of playing it my gun stopped working golf was fun I had a small collection of games for my system and enjoyed it for a very long time
Gotta get that WiiMote hooked up to the MiSTer! A real zapper works, too. But the WiiMote means the display doesn't matter. We just beat Yoshi's Safari a while ago with WiiMote. Though, the feel of the SMS light phaser makes it worth getting a SNAC for sure.
I had thought about picking up a real zapper for my mister but figured I’d be playing it mainly on my gaming monitor, the WiiMote works perfectly fine for my kiddos lol
Robot Block/Stack-Up is not a tech demo, it's just unplayable without R.O.B. There is a set of colored pucks that start in a certain order and need to be re-arranged. The way this works is that you input commands to R.O.B. through the game (that jumping screen you showed) and he opens/closes his hands, moves them left or right etc.
I didn’t have an NES, as my family couldn’t afford it, but my mom bought a HiTex Famiclone with 3 multicart. It had Baseball, Ice Climber (the music is fantastic), Video Pin Ball. In addition I had Load Runner, Road Fighter, Balloon Fight, Donkey Kong. Sadly when my mom moved at a point she threw it away not knowing how rare of a system it actually is. I have found one reference with a picture on the internet.
When I saw my Nintendo under the tree for chrismas back in 1985 i went nuts. That memory i will never forget. It's just a great feeling to reminisce about.
The earliest memories I have of the NES are of playing Clu Clu Land and Ice Climber at a kiosk in "American", a Milwaukee big box electronics store. I think I had already played Super Mario in arcades so it was a given that I needed this thing badly. Got mine for Christmas of 1987, one of the greatest gifts of all time.
Two interesting things to note: 1. You didn't mention Gyromite game B! Game B was my favorite as a kid. It's "sleepwalk mode," where you ONLY control the pillars, while the professor endlessly walks to the right and you need to guide him safely to his bed. You can play game B entirely with controller 2, since you never control the professor directly, and it's really a nice puzzle challenge -- also with really great music that differs from game A's. 2. There is actually meaning in the name "Clu Clu Land." Clu Clu is a fancy way of rendering the Japanese word "kurukuru," which is an onomatopoeia for spinning. So if they wanted to fully translate the title, they could've called the game "Round and Round Land" or something -- but there was no reason not to just leave it as Clu Clu, so that's what they did.
I was 2 years old in 85 but my dad loved the NES and got all these games. In 87 I started playing these games and crazy enough I still have most of these games.
In 1985 I was still playing Atari 2600 and maybe in 1987 I knew about the NES from a classmate in high school. I think I bought my NES in 1989 when I was studying in college and working. I began buying the arcade classics:Popeye, Gauntlet, Galaga, Gyruss, Elevator Action, Contra, etc. And of course rpjs beginning with Zelda. The NES is my favorite cartridge system. Disc is the PS2. Well I still have most of my collection. Great video John!👍
That was a real nostalgia trip. I didn't have an NES until 1989 or 1990, but I did rent a few of these when I got my NES. Especially the zapper games. I liked going after the bad cowboys when I was a kid. lol
I remember loving the atari 2600 pinball back in the day. I lost interest in atari around the ET phase. One day around 85-86 a friend got the nes for his birthday and played super Mario for the first time and I was hooked again. My teens I skipped the snes phase . Then one day went to a friend's house he had the new ps1 and re1 I played for 15 minutes left and bought a ps1 that day. Re series still my favorite.
2 things about clu clu Land. 1 - the name Clu Clu comes from a Japanese onomatopoeia, but I can't remember what sound it represents. 2 - The coins you spoke of are actually the same sprites as the rupees in the first legend of Zelda game. They simply went from orange to blue.
Excitebike is an absolute blast, and Hogan's Alley and Wrecking Crew have a great atmosphere, but I think I have to pick the most default choice possible: Super Mario Bros. It's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of video games, but that usually doesn't go far beyond 1-1; there is SO much to explore, and there are so many secrets and oddities to discover. My personal favorites are the mushroom platforms in 4-3 (and 4-2, technically), the gray void of 6-3, and that pink pipe in 8-4.
Fun fact: Duck Hunt and Gyromite were the first pack-in titles (the original system came with the Zapper and R.O.B. since Nintendo was trying to market it as more of a toy, natch). R.O.B. was surely on the way out by the time most of us even knew it existed.
Played sooo much Soccer and Baseball way back when, but Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt were easily the most played at our house. Love all the black label NES games, though, always makes me happy knowing I've got the full set in my NES library.
I worked at Toys r us for 3 years between 87 and 89. I remember we went thru so many Action Sets. They flew off the shelves as fast as we could stock them. Its insane how many we sold.
I remember my dad buying this for me and my brother for Christmas and we had 10-Yard Fight, Kung Fu, Tennis, Gyromite, Baseball, and Duck Hunt. Game we played the most was probably 1942, loved that game.
Nintendo at its greatest is when they create fascinatingly unique things. The Power Pad. Super Nintendo's audio effects processor to give games reverb. The 3DS. Labo. These things, and many more are Nintendo at its core, and I hope it never stops.
I wish you actually showed Golf. That game has the most soothing, satisying sound effects I have ever heard in a videogame. The out of bounds sound might be my favorite basic/simplistic/primitive (however you wanna word it) sound effect I have ever heard.
I got my NES in '88 and played until 93 ... we had a lot of Famicom and bootlegs games from Asia and we used an adapter that had a string to pull the cartridge out. Awesome memories 🥰
So of course the big titles got played a ton. Excitebike, Mario, Duck Hunt. But Kung Fu Master was one that my friends from my youth and I played a ridiculous amount of time/times. Now at 43 and my two best friends both at 42 years of age STILL throw Kung Fu Master in just to mess with each other as we try and run through it. So many amazing moments of "smack talk" came from that game.
I remember playing Baseball and thinking "Man, this is awesome." Then Baseball Stars came out, and that was a wrap. I still play Baseball Stars to this day.
My sister and I got our NES Action Set on Christmas 1988. I was 3, she was 10. I used to ask her to help me fight Boom Boom in the first castle in SMB3 because he freaked me out! Of course it's been years since I've fought him because I always get the second warp whistle and bypass him entirely lol Edit: We didn't get SMB3 until much later, but just thought it was a funny story
I didn’t get the NES at launch but had a Deluxe set the following Christmas of 86, as my first games were Pinball, Gyro/Duckhunt Legends of Zelda and Castlevania
I was born in '91 and my dad got an NES in 92 or 93. Of the launch titles, I played a lot of Baseball! But obviously Super Mario Bros got the most playtime. Also ended up playing a lot of Tennis on Animal Crossing when that came out.
Loved Tennis and Baseball. I still play them today. Ice Climber was super tough but like you said I had to go back to it. Kung Fu is still one of my all time favorite games. (Even though I am terrible at it) and I've never played Wrecking Crew, I will definitely have to give it a try!! Thanks for the review!
1:41 to quote Wikipedia: Although "Clu Clu Land" is the official English title for the game, "Clu Clu" is actually an anglicization of "Kuru Kuru"; a Japanese onomatopoeia that refers to something going "around and around". In order for Bubbles to move around the mazes, she must grab onto poles with her hands. When she holds on to a pole without letting go, she spins "around and around". The same phrase is also the basis for the title of the Game Boy Advance game Kuru Kuru Kururin.
'85 we were playing on Colecovision. Didn't start seeing the NES making its mark until mid '86 at the earliest. Of these, the only ones I recall playing a bunch are Super Mario (obviously), Duck Hunt, Excite Bike, and for some reason Golf. Seriously, I don't give a toss about golf and don't think I ever played another videogame version, but somehow played a lot of the original on NES.
I still play the Golf game to this day on my NES classic mini. Kung Fu was also available on the Atari 2600. It was called Kung Fu Masters and released by Activision on the Atari VCS/2600.
Here's just some of the games you played for NES in 1986 th-cam.com/video/_lCbz6AgtBQ/w-d-xo.html
Super Mario Bros probably the one for me but we didn't get a NES until 92.
My gaming journey didn't start till 95
Wrecking crew will be partially adapted in the upcoming Illumination-produced Super Mario movie seeing how Foreman Spike is part of the cast and all.
That's a great story, Jeremy.

Yeah i remember getting one for Xmas 87. I always hear 85...im like nope. not for a lot of us.
I'm sure I was 8 and must have got it in 89 UK
Chicagoan, well region rat, checking in. I do remember my uncle (4 years older than me) had gotten this in 87 or 88 and I gotten mine in 89.

You know, I thought I remembered getting the NES for Christmas of 1986, but I wasn't sure, because it was so long ago. Being a Minnesotan, it makes sense that it wasn't until 1986.
Nah. We knew and were waiting here in Cali
Played a ton of golf back in the day, and yo be honest it’s still a lot of fun today. But even if you don’t like golf, here’s a game worked on by Miyamoto, Iwata and Koji Kondo. Worth having for that reason alone.
whats ur handicap?
Me samesies. I got that with the ROB set for Xmas. My dad wanted the golf game
NES open is better!
I was only 4 in 1985 but I used to play my sister's old atari.. I didn't get my nes until 1987 but I ended up playing all these games. Good times
Me too
1987 the family got the NES. But I remember excite bike and super Mario played by other kids.
I bought an Nes when I was in College. There was a store right next door that sold Nes, Genesis, & Turbo-Grafx systems and games. This was in 1987😀
I was playing my Atari 5200 until Christmas of 86 - when I got that sweet NES!
I just commented then scrolled down and read yours.Maybe 'good times' is just a natural go to?It was a sitcom in the seventies as well.
As a little league baseball player along with my brother, I have a special place in my heart for the original Baseball on the NES. Almost four decades later, I bet my bro and I would still enjoy a game against eachother.

3:36 - "We had Golf. Yep, it's Golf! Ice Climber came out..." 😂
I'm likely in the minority but I actually liked NES Golf quite a bit.
I like how Golf was only on the screen for like 4 seconds. 🤣🤣
I enjoyed Baseball on the Gameboy. It looks like it's based on the NES version.
I broke out the NES recently and cleaned the pins and my cartridges. Played some StarTropics, Double Dragon II, and Dr Mario. Then I threw in Wild Gunman as I’d never played it before. I actually really enjoyed that!
Nice set of games right there!!!!💯💯💯
I had the Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt combo (that was my favorite game - both of them), Golf, Excite Bike, and Hogans Alley in 1985.
!!!!Nostalgia at its finest!!!!

and to think in those days, those launch titles were actually arcade perfect. i remember the NES coin-ops that had like 5 games in them.
I wonder if that's where SNK got the idea for the Neo Geo. I never thought bout that until now.
1:47 Those are Zelda sprites from BEFORE Zelda (1986 in Japan).
The rupees are obvious, but the less obvious are the snout-less octoroks with a palate swap.

Didn't get an NES till 1988 and got Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt and Tetris. I still have both cartridges along with several other games if course.
I remember my day-care having an NES and most of these titles.
Smb, hogan's alley and a ton of Kung fu.
Let’s see
1. Excite Bike
2. Ice Climbers
3. Duck Hunt
4. Gyromite
5. Kung-Fu
6. Super Mario Bros
7. 1942
I really want to like Clu Clu Land, but it's just so awkward to control. However, I do like Ice Climber, even with those controls. It feels so fun to collect those vegetables at the end of each level.
Am i the only one that teleports back to late 80/early 90s just hearing nes music? ie. Just let the Predator demo play..
When I was a kid I wasn’t aware of the NES until Christmas of 88. The kids of a friend of the family got one and we played it for 2 days straight.
I was born in 81 and got my nes when i was 10 but i played super Mario bros duck hunt after a bit of playing it my gun stopped working golf was fun I had a small collection of games for my system and enjoyed it for a very long time

Wow sour patch kids have been out since 1985! I had no clue!

I always played goonies 1 and gradius 1 in famicom when i was fifth and sixth grade in 1986.that year also the fall of marcos regime.
LOVE these games by year breakdowns !!!

thank you sir always informative please keep going with these bite sized memories of nostalgia
Golf and Excitebike. I just played Golf yesterday as a matter of fact. True classic.
I was a little late to the party but in 1990 I had one, from this list I had Mario, duck hunt, Kung Fu, excite bike. Kung Fu was surprisingly fun.
Jesus... Exitebike, Ice Climber, Kung Fu, Tennis and Wrecking Crew. That just opend some Doors in my Brain lol.
Some of the best times in gaming
Baseball: Royals and Cardinals in the 1985 World Series!!!! Go Royals!!!!
For me it would be a toss up between Excite Bike and Golf for 1985 releases.....other than Mario Bros.
Excitebike is an absolute blast, and Hogan's Alley and Wrecking Crew have a great atmosphere, but I think I have to pick the most default choice possible: Super Mario Bros.
The whole suite of gadgets was the "Entertainment System", and the main console itself is merely the "Control Deck"
Thanks John!! Always a pleasure to watch your videos. It's my weekly does or nostalgia and when things weren't so heavy. Keep up the great work.
I didn't even see an NES until 1990 🤣 but this is a great resource for me to check out it's history now my friend 😎👍
Loved the video! 1993 and 94 for the NES would be fun videos too
Reflecting on Wild Gunman in 2015 (er, 2022):
"You mean you have to use your hands? That's like a baby's toy!"
Ahh, pogo-bals, my ankles have scars for life because of you...
Love these dose-of-nostalgia type of videos. Keep'm coming.
This series rocks, thanks for keeping up with the great work!
It’s crazy to me how far above the rest Super Mario Bros is
Wild Gunman! Had so much fun with my dad playing this game. It was the only game he would play.
8:43 You have to use your hands? That's a babies toy!
aaaah pinball whas my favorite back in the 80´s played the heck out of it
I remember playing the Kung-Fu arcade having to tippy toe to reach. That's the epitome of nostalgia for me. Great vid!
U Can Beat Videogames showed that you could shoot the dog in a bonus level. I never knew that but I watched it and you can
Got so good Mario bros I beat it every time I play 😊
I remember playing Baseball and thinking "Man, this is awesome." Then Baseball Stars came out, and that was a wrap. I still play Baseball Stars to this day.
I had Super Mario Bros, Duck Hunt, Excite Bike, Ice Climber, Kung Fu, Base Ball, Pinball. Those are my favourites on your list
In wild gunman you have to use your hands? It's like a baby's toy!
There's an improvement patch for gyromite to let you play it on one controller
I remember renting gyromite a lot. Had no idea I was supposed to use a robot. I love that music.
i begged and begged my mom for a NES so i got it xmas of 1985 super mario and kung fu was in heavy rotation great vid 😎
My sister and I got our NES Action Set on Christmas 1988. I was 3, she was 10. I used to ask her to help me fight Boom Boom in the first castle in SMB3 because he freaked me out! Of course it's been years since I've fought him because I always get the second warp whistle and bypass him entirely lol
Edit: We didn't get SMB3 until much later, but just thought it was a funny story
I played soooooo much Kung-Fu and Excitebike back in the day. Still love them from time to time. 😊😊
I didn’t get the NES at launch but had a Deluxe set the following Christmas of 86, as my first games were Pinball, Gyro/Duckhunt Legends of Zelda and Castlevania
Super mario bros. is, hands down, still the best launch title for the NES.
Super Mario and Baseball, but my first NES game was Twinbee in 1990.
1:41 to quote Wikipedia:
Although "Clu Clu Land" is the official English title for the game, "Clu Clu" is actually an anglicization of "Kuru Kuru"; a Japanese onomatopoeia that refers to something going "around and around".
Always enjoy your content, good sir !
Considering my parents didn’t even meet until 1986, I don’t think I played these games in 1985. The title is false advertising
Bet-100, I was a 6yr old in 85 I can run any1 at 10 yards fight or E-Bike
I was only 2 days shy of being 5 months old when the NES released in NA... but I still got one before the SNES came out!
John Riggs is a part of the Canadian Convoy!! Love you dude. Hold that line
I still play the Golf game to this day on my NES classic mini. Kung Fu was also available on the Atari 2600. It was called Kung Fu Masters and released by Activision on the Atari VCS/2600.
"Yep, it's golf."
That just made me laugh.
