This band still has special place in my heart. I bought Icon because I was going to see them opening for Sepultura back in 1993 @ Palasesto, Milano... I was 14 years old btw, my father was waiting for us outside the venue lol. To keep it short, I ended up falling in love with Icon and I was more excited to see them than Sepu. During the following years I quit entirely listening to metal, except for them. In late 1995 i saw them for the second and last time, also in Milan - on the Draconian Times tour and they were headliners... it was mind-blowing, me and my mates were singing along almost every song. It was also my last metal concert, my tastes changed from gothic metal to 80s goth and then again postpunk/industrial and everything new wave related - which are still my main musical obsessions almost 30 years after...and guess who introduced me to The Sisters Of Mercy? Again PL with their cover of Walk Away on the Ep that came out along with Draconian Times. And I agree, this one might be their best song.
My guess is it was standing out too much and would not be fitting the album. So it shared the same fate as many other PL b-side songs. I am glad they did not do the same with "Pity the sadness".
Who decides which of their songs are going to be b-sides? This should rather have been the freaking single. The same goes for As I Die, Another Desire, Sway, A Side You'll Never Know, most recently Shrines and other songs I don't remember spot on. The Hour was awesome, too. Also Cardinal Zero and I am certain I am missing a bunch of other great b-sides they've published over the years. Kinda like Katatonia.
I completely agree. I've been a die hard PL fan all my life, have all the albums etc and 'Sweetness' is up there with my favourite PL songs. If they pushed this as their main single it could have been one of the biggest metal songs around....Greg's lead guitar melody in the chorus is infectious!
You have a history of holding back A certain sweetness that I lack Sensitive till the day of the final strike Hatred coming on from greater heights Won't you stay away I'll pass away a different day Won't you stay away Don't hold it against me Looking down on a rogue this lonely frame It's predictable the killing game The sickness knows not what feels right You gotta hold on to what feels right Won't you stay away I'll pass away a different day Won't you stay away Together it's impossible Together it's impossible I see blood on the robe Cold hearts will still haunt you

This is probably, the best of their songs.
One of my all time favorite songs by Paradise Lost…
I guess I'll never going to understand how ingenious Sweetness ended up as a lowly b-side. It deserved being a leading single of 'Icon'.

Cold hearts will still haunt you
You have a history of holding back
A certain sweetness that I lack
Sensitive till the day of the final strike
Hatred coming on from greater heights
Won't you stay away
I'll pass away a different day
Won't you stay away
Don't hold it against me
Looking down on a rogue this lonely frame
It's predictable the killing game
The sickness knows not what feels right
You gotta hold on to what feels right
Won't you stay away
I'll pass away a different day
Won't you stay away
Together it's impossible
Together it's impossible
I see blood on the robe
