That in itself is tricky to do but stick with it & you can do it. Thanks for your message & good luck with your project. If you have more electrical questions you can always go to my main TH-cam channel page then click on playlists & scroll down to electrical as I have a ton of videos there to learn from. Thanks!
Joe, thank you for this video. I borrowed a fish tape from my buddy and it reminded me of when my father in law taught me how to fish electrical cable through the walls and ceilings - he also used electrical tape in this way and have done it that way ever since.
So glad you found my video! I have lots more DIY electrical videos if you want to see & learn & save more. Just go to my main TH-cam channel page then click on playlists & scroll down to electrical. Try it. Thanks for stopping by!
Needed fish tape yesterday and didn't have one so I just used a plumbing snake wire (the flat kind, not the spring shaped kind) to pull romex from my attic yesterday. Comes wound similar to fish tape, without the plastic case. Worked perfectly. I tape from the tip of the wire all the way past the romex sheath to keep from snagging anything with the edge of the sheathing during the pull. That way there is a smooth transition as the romex passes thru the wall and box.
I've seen those grip things at the end of a pull wire, but I've really never needed one before, since I just use electrical tape. I saw my electrician do this years ago. He always used electrical tape so I got into the habit of using it too. It's never failed me yet. Thanks for commenting. Joe :0
This is what I exactly what I need to know. I picked up some southwire 25 steel fish tape. This video has helped so much. Thanks Mr joe for refreshing my knowledge on this.
Thank you so much for the kind words! I have a ton of DIY videos on my channel just to let you know. Go to my main TH-cam channel page then click on playlists then scroll down to see all kinds of ways to save money around the house. Take care!
Thanks for your comments & suggestions. I never really had good results with the longer fish tapes but I do have a suggestion that might help. Whenever my fish tape seems to go in hard, the best way I found to remedy this was to unwind the entire tape (or almost all of it) then rewind it & the tape should fall back into place easier in the reel, if you do this. There's nothing worse than a tape that's hard to pull out &/or hard to wind back up. Thanks again for commenting. Joe :0
I liked the episode when you came down from the attic and needed a drink you were sweatin bad! It reminded me of some jobs I did around the house...but you at least know what youre doing. I was sweaty trying to figure things out :)
Awesome well then I'm your guy since I say lots of times "I'm just an average Joe so if I can do it then you can do it". Most of my videos are like this one where I am showing & explaining to beginners/intermediates with showing them (you) how to save money around the house. In fact I have a ton of videos that will help! Just go to my main TH-cam channel page then click on playlists then scroll down to whatever topic you want to see & have at it. You will save money for sure!
@VideoJoeKnows I can get in the attic, but there are firewalls everywhere so im screwed. I dont know how to remove the recessed cannister either. I'll have to see if the Joe made a video yet
Well the fish tape has a loop at the end. If you fish down the wall, you could possibly get the loop caught on something inside the wall. you could tape the end of loop though. I have never gotten the loop caught yet. Just be aware of that. Try not to ever kink your tape or you will have issues when rolling back up. I don't know what I would do if I didn't have a tape like this cause when you need it....you need it! Thanks for your question. Joe :0
Ha! I will tell you all kinds of things to do on my channel! Just go to my main TH-cam channel page then click on playlists then scroll down & you will see all the DIY topics I have on my channel.....electrical too! Thanks for your message....made me laugh!
Now that's THE most useful video on youtube out there. I was looking for how to use a Fish Tape to fish a coax cable down to my basement...this is exactly what I need. AWESOME
hey joe did you know that they also make wire pulling grips for if you do alot of wire pulling you dont use electrical tape and you dont need to strip the wire so they save money?
Hey building man you are welcome! I have a ton of other DIY electrical videos that could & will assist you further when working on electrical around the house. Just go to my main TH-cam channel page then click on playlists & scroll down to electrical & have at it. Thanks for stopping by!
I would not recommend cutting the fish tape. I think it's made of case hardened steel but if all else fails then yes you can cut it if you can. I would try to do what you intend without cutting it but if you really have it made up in your mind then I guess you have to do what you have to do! Let me know how it goes...
@VideoJoeKnows Thing is my project requires a strong square connection, which the wire can provide, I haven't found any other steel or strong wire that square shape, so cutting it will have to do. This project is a bit unusual to let you know, and I will update you.
Here’s something that can make life easier: Fishing from one small hole (like in a bottom or top plate in a stud wall) to another small hole (like in a knockout in an existing box) can try your patience when you’re trying to hook it and pull it out. This sometimes helps. Get some mason’s string. It’s cheap, dispensable and readily available. Unravel more than you’ll need for your wire run so that it’s loose. Tie it to the hook in your fish tape. Straighten out the first few feet of fish tape, and feed the tape into the wall, while it carries the string with it. Now when you go to your target like your box, hook the string instead of the fish tape. No need to worry about the fish tape being too far past the target. Pull the string into the box, and cut it. Now you can use your string to pull the wire.
Dude awesome to hear you were going to trade school for electrical. How did it go & are you now an electrician? I have lots of electrical DIY videos on my channel for more learning if you want to check out....just go to my main TH-cam channel page then click on playlists & scroll down to electrical & have at it! Thanks again for stopping by years ago!
How would you pull ethernet cable? I’m trying to either pull ethernet cable up from my basement to my living room , or down from the living room to the basement. I’m running it alongside coax cable that is already run there. The goal is to have ethernet in my living room since my cable modem and switch are in the basement, directly below the living room. I trying to think of a way to use the coax cable to guide the ethernet cable, but I still need something to push or pull the ethernet cable along its path.
I think the steel tape will help you. You may have to cut in & install a new cutin box here or there to assist you....? If your existing coaxial cables are stapled & attached to the studs then it makes it difficult to even consider using one of them as a pull wire per se but I think the steel tape will assist for sure. Sorry for not responding sooner. Did you get it taken care of?
You could also use a flexibit system for drilling the holes. You can go to my main TH-cam channel page then click on playlists then scroll down to electrical to find those videos....
@infringinator Don't think I've made a video on how to remove recessed light fixture cans. It is possible though. It gives you a little access for fishing wires, looking for leaks, etc.. A little confined quarters....but do-able.....depending on what type of can you have. I guess you'd have to get into one to see if yours are capable of being removed then reinstalled. Let me know of any concerns or what you are doing, for you to need to remove the can. Joe :0
I've never seen someone so excited about electrical tape! :-) Thanks for the how-to. I just bought a fish tape and wasn't totally sure about connecting wire to it.
Not sure about that. I would think if you go to a large box store you should be fine with whatever one they sell. If you have an electrical wholesale house around closer to where you live you might want to go there & see what they have. I would suspect that they might have a better one available there since all they do is sell to the pro contractors. Or at least you could ask them & they will have a better answer for you. Thanks for watching my videos! Joe :0
fishing down walls I recommend a mag pull tool. goes right through insulation vs fish tape just sits there winding up un insulation. 2nd best tool is glow rods aka push pull rods those are now sold at all big box hardware stores... the fish tape would be my last resort tool. happy fishing!
Shoot I've heard of that happening but luckily hasn't happened to me...yet! Some electrical dikes cutting really hard? or hacksaw? Pretty hard steel for sure. What did you end up doing?
FINALLY, someone who tells you how to get it done There are way too many ( 🤬insert angry cussing and swearing emoji here ) useless, verbose and drunk videos that explain the obvious but don’t explain the nitty gritty practical how-to-use thé hook tip end and tips & to use the electrical tape as a taper!!! SWEET ( 👍🏼 insert thumbs up emoji here)
Awesome comment! Speaking of awesome did you know I have almost 3500 DIY videos on my channel for all sorts of things that will save you money around the house? Just go to my main TH-cam channel page then click on playlists then scroll down & have at it! My gift to you...!
i work for dish and have to do many wall fish' and i hate it so much when i have to fish wires through a plastic box, sometimes you get lucky and they didnt staple the coax inside the wall and you can just hook your new one to the old one and pull it up or down which ever u prefer but most cases its stapled all through that fuckin wall so you have to go up top drill your hole next to the original hole and shove your fiberglass rods down in the wall or if you have this you could try it but im sure you would have the same issue. Your tryin to get your rod inside a little hole that you cant see so i usually just take my spade bit and destroy the plastic box haha make a hole be enough so i can find my rod and yank that bitch through after about 30 minutes of goin in and out the attic
Have you ever tried to remove an existing single gang plastic box so you could then easily fish your wire(s) down? It's easy to do then you can pull your wire where you need to go. Sometimes you can get your hand in the wall & feel for your wire & once you pull your wires out you can then install the existing & new wires into a new plastic cutin box in the wall & presto....you're done. Thanks for your comments! Joe :0
VideoJoeKnows I am rewiring a 1950 house with original rag wire I am just taking out some small metal boxes with a flat bar and hammer takes time BUT trying to get a wire in some it is impossible others behave .Then I replace with plastic box, I am a big fan of plastic some terminals on receptacles will touch metal boxes and short out. Strange as this sounds I am enjoying doing this is, it is my Uncles he is old disabled Vet, I am charging him no money .I work with his son in law both of us are in our 50s have done electrical work we work slow and smart talk a lot too, we have common sense know when to back off. I could never make money at this, I treat jobs like it is mine go the extra mile what a pro would hurry up and do ok job ,I will put the extra screw .I will not do panels I have one pro I use very happy with his work .
Man I've had my fair share of metal and plastic boxes with rg59 stapled to the dam stud so u can't pull ur new one with it I've never been able to remove one I just take a spade bit or auger and bust a hole in the top big enuff ro drop my rod down in it from the attic if I'm lucky enuff lol Ice wasted many hours making trips back and fourth to the attic tryin to get inside that box Its verry challenging and takes a lot of patients and water
Dude you shouldn't have to do that anymore. Remove the existing plastic gang outlet box & you will have plenty of room to fish your wires down & pull them out the hole. Then you can install a plastic cutin box & presto! You will save lots of time not to mention all that water you're going to be saving...! Joe :0
I've never had any luck removing them Most of the ones I run across are screwed or nailed to the side of a stud unless there is a trick to takin em out any time I can save a trip to the attic makes my day much better hahaa
If you're alone, it will take longer since you will be back & forth until you get it. You might want to then remove your electrical outlet junction box, then you will have more room, the install a cutin outlet box in its place. That's what I do. It works great. I have a video that shows you how to remove an existing outlet box. If you don't know how, then look for the video. Joe :0
I've never used a nylon fish tape. I would think the metal one is better since you can push it harder & it will stay stiff & find the hole more easily than a nylon one. Good luck with your project! Joe :0
You will wreck your fish tape if you dispense it the way you showed, by holding the handle and turning the reel housing. That will damage (bend) the tape that is inside the reel and cause it to tangle up internally. The proper way to dispense a fish tape is to hold the handle and pull on the tape. That will dispense tape without damaging it. Here's the drill: when dispensing the tape, hold the handle and pull the tape out. When rewinding the tape, hold the handle and turn the reel. Any other method will ruin the tape in short order. I suspect that the person who posted earlier about all the fish tapes being defective as his local source was likely trying tapes that had been returned by someone who abused them by improper dispensing. Read the directions that the manufacturer sends with the tapes and you'll be much wiser in the proper usage.
Where would I be without my trusty steel fish tape, I ask myself?!! I would not be able to do lots of jobs I would otherwise been able to do, had it only been for this! Joe :0
Awesome! Hey why not save my entire TH-cam channel VideoJoeKnows to your saved list too? I have tons of DIY videos & have then in different topic categories in the playlists area on my main TH-cam channel page so have at it & save yourself more money around the house. Yes YOU!

You don't have to tackle your projects alone anymore! I know you have it in you. & to save money along the way...what a bonus. Joe :0
Without "knocking" the use of steel tape, there is a stiff plastic product available in lengths of 3.6 metres which has several advantages. 1:- it is an insulator - could be advantageous in electrical situations. 2:- it is usually free at many building sites. It is the 'Yellow Tongue, used in particle board flooring. However, this flooring does not seem to be available in North America but only in Australia. So you would need to BUY from there - and pay the postage to get it.. Sorry! Try ebay!
@jjbeemer I've got to get you interested in the video somehow....don't I?!!....lol What can I say. I guess my passion shows, when I'm trying to show viewers how to save money on their howto/DIY projects. Hope it will keep you around. Joe :0
Dale Larsen Thanks so much for your vote of confidence! Good luck with your project. I would be interested in knowing how you do upon completion. Please send me a line later.... Joe :0

Thank you electric Joe… you’re one steel fish tape tugging Bro! Great clarification, details, step by step instructional video! The process seems simplistic for most laywomen/ men, so now it’s time to put me in for a test ride! Looking forward to get a move on & give it a GO…From an enthusiastic chick equipped, thick in the know... yet Not a Pro.
Ha! You don't have to be a pro! That's what my channel is all about. If I (an average joe) can do it....then you can too! Thanks for your message! Joe :0

Just go to my main TH-cam channel page then click on playlists & scroll down to see all the ways I have for you to save money around the house. YOU deserve it!
PS/FYI: Home Depot lowered the price of their 125' Klein Tools steel fish tape to $39.97, but two of the reviews on their site said it was very difficult to payout and rewind. I went to HD and attempted to use it prior to purchasing. There were two on the shelf and neither of them worked. (The wraps of tape get twisted up inside the case.) I didn't try their 250' tape, and the smaller sizes worked to my satisfaction, but the 125' tape appears to be a lemon. Test it before you buy!
@infringinator I had to laugh at that one. It's good to sweat all out, some times.....to appreciate your efforts. Did you ever make it to your attic area? I know you had issues up there, once upon a time. Joe :0
So this is for hollow walls? No wonder why this doesn't exist in europe, because we don't just let our wires hang loosely in walls, always use conduit.
The only wires that would be hanging loose are any wires that you may fish down a hollow wall. The rest of the existing wiring would 've been stapled to the sides of the wood studs. Joe :0
"You're not wasting electrical tape...you're getting the work done" THAT WAS GOLDEN!!!!!!
So awesome to have you stop by with your nice message. You rock for sure!!
I like your style Joe and I like how you are straight and to the point, yet thorough enough to completely explain the topic
Thanks for taking time out to let me know how I'm doing. Much appreciated! Joe :0
The only video that actually showed how to unravel the tape from the wheel 😂 thanks!
That in itself is tricky to do but stick with it & you can do it. Thanks for your message & good luck with your project. If you have more electrical questions you can always go to my main TH-cam channel page then click on playlists & scroll down to electrical as I have a ton of videos there to learn from. Thanks!

Bought myself a 25 ft fish tape. I intend to use the wire itself for a personal project. Is cutting the wire not recommended?

Man I've had my fair share of metal and plastic boxes with rg59 stapled to the dam stud so u can't pull ur new one with it
I've never been able to remove one
I just take a spade bit or auger and bust a hole in the top big enuff ro drop my rod down in it from the attic if I'm lucky enuff lol
Ice wasted many hours making trips back and fourth to the attic tryin to get inside that box
Its verry challenging and takes a lot of patients and water
Dude you shouldn't have to do that anymore. Remove the existing plastic gang outlet box & you will have plenty of room to fish your wires down & pull them out the hole. Then you can install a plastic cutin box & presto! You will save lots of time not to mention all that water you're going to be saving...! Joe :0
I've never had any luck removing them
Most of the ones I run across are screwed or nailed to the side of a stud unless there is a trick to takin em out any time I can save a trip to the attic makes my day much better hahaa
Joe :0
which is better nylon or steel Fish Tape?
Wow cool! Thanks for the tip. I will indeed do it the way you suggest, from now on! Have a great day! Joe :0
Thanks Don glad i read this first just purchased one did wonder how it returns - thought it spring loaded done exactly what you said perfect.
Where would I be without my trusty steel fish tape, I ask myself?!! I would not be able to do lots of jobs I would otherwise been able to do, had it only been for this! Joe :0
Are there any disadvantages to using fish tape
Not really. I always try this when I think nothing else will work for sure.....
I thought that was Joel Osteen
It's not?

Without "knocking" the use of steel tape, there is a stiff plastic product available in lengths of 3.6 metres which has several advantages.
1:- it is an insulator - could be advantageous in electrical situations.
2:- it is usually free at many building sites.
It is the 'Yellow Tongue, used in particle board flooring.
However, this flooring does not seem to be available in North America but only in Australia.
So you would need to BUY from there - and pay the postage to get it..
Sorry!
Try ebay!

Thank you electric Joe… you’re one steel fish tape tugging Bro! Great clarification, details, step by step instructional video! Looking forward to get a move on & give it a GO…From an enthusiastic chick equipped, thick in the know... yet Not a Pro.

@jenzeppelin Well how do you like that? & all this time I've been wearing a hat to try to cover the mop up!!....lol Joe :0
@infringinator I had to laugh at that one. It's good to sweat all out, some times.....to appreciate your efforts. Did you ever make it to your attic area? I know you had issues up there, once upon a time. Joe :0
Awesome.
So glad you watched this video! I have more!
So this is for hollow walls? No wonder why this doesn't exist in europe, because we don't just let our wires hang loosely in walls, always use conduit.
So what exactly is your procedure for rewiring a home...ripping all the walls down first so you can run conduit inside them? I seriously doubt it.
The only wires that would be hanging loose are any wires that you may fish down a hollow wall. The rest of the existing wiring would 've been stapled to the sides of the wood studs. Joe :0
