  • This is from my ride on Santana on Friday, July 5, 2024. She has been out of consistent work for 6 months, and this is our second ride back. Because of her just getting back into work, the heat, and because she's currently barefoot, I did not ask her for any big stops or lead changes during this ride. I have other videos of these moves should you be interested!
Santana “Annie” is a 2009 AQHA/NRHA registered dun mare by Don Quintana and out of a Peppy San Badger mare. She is a very stocky 14.2. She has all of the bells and whistles of a reiner (stops, spins, lead changes and looks!) with the level headedness of a ranch horse. I have owned her for 5 years and known her since she was a yearling, and she has always been the most low maintenance one in the herd.
Annie is level-headed, brave and honest under saddle both in and out of the arena, but she needs a rider with a slow, learned hand (and leg!). She is responsive to gentle asks, forgiving, and the easiest ride when you know what you’re doing, but she is not the right fit for a beginner or a harsh rider. She has a lot of buttons, a big motor and an even bigger whoa. She is quick-minded, smarter than most, and will absolutely tell on you if you are too rough on her.
Annie has a couple of AQHA points, and carried me to a state championship and southeast regional top 15 in my last few years of 4-H, but she hasn’t been shown for a couple years. Everything about showing her is easy, from the moment you put her on the trailer till you’re posing with your ribbons, she’s in the zone. I have shown her in hunter, western, and ranch showmanship, reining, ranch riding, ranch trail, ranch horsemanship, and western horsemanship, but I’m sure she would just as happily go along in any rail or pattern class you please.
Annie loads, hauls, clips, bathes, stands for any farrier, cross-ties, ground ties, and will stand tied patiently, lunges, drags logs, pushes cows, sidepasses, doesn’t care about someone roping off of her, stands in clinics, trail rides, takes shots and wormer without batting an eye, and is an angel for the vet. She even lets you clip her ears! The biggest “spook” I have ever seen from her is stopping and snorting at a tarp blowing and snapping in the wind. She is my pocket pony - she always wants to be right beside you and is very affectionate (but in a very well-mannered, non-pushy kind of way).
Annie is trustworthy and used to dogs, kids and all of the other critters you may have running around your barn. She has cow sense, but hasn’t been worked around any for a few years. She’s easy to get along with in the pasture (to the point of getting bullied sometimes) and needs to be somewhere where she is turned out at least half of the day and allowed to be a horse and get her energy out!
I am looking for a new situation for Annie because I am headed to law school in the fall and will not be able to give her the attention she deserves. I will be picky with where she goes, and will be checking on her! I would prefer her to end up with someone who will be working with a trainer and riding regularly, because she is happiest when she has a job. I am asking in the low five figures, but will be negotiable in price and potentially a lease to the perfect home.
She is currently located in the Pungo area of Virginia Beach.
