I like the thinning shears between the eyes because it gives a more natural blend line than if I make cuts with straight shears. Nothing wrong at all with doing it with straights, though, if you like the result!
Yes, with experience, particularly professionally in a salon, that's true. I find that novices get better, less all-or-nothing results with thinners. Also, when doing show dog eyebrows, tweaking little by little with thinners can give the best result for the specific dogs, depending on head conformation and the desired effect.

That cut on the brows could be done in 5 seconds with straights without the thinning
