I had the pleasure of lucking into a never ending double barrel shotgun (the one that doesn't need to be reloaded) in Fallout 4 the other day, renamed it "Boomstick"
The possessions work via open wounds. The Evil Dead: -Sheryl is cut up after being raped by the trees and becomes possessed. -Shelley is cut up via the window breaking on her and becomes possessed. -Linda is stabbed in the ankle with a pencil by possessed Sheryl and becomes possessed. -Scotty is cut up by the trees and becomes possessed. Evil Dead 2: -Ash after all the shit he went through in the first movie is possessed, but it was right at sun rise so the evil can't hold him. -Linda is cut up via the window breaking on her and becomes possessed. -Ed is cut via the glass picture frame he is thrown into by Henrietta and becomes possessed. -Ash being even more cut up than before gets possessed again but is able to fight it off because he is the chosen one. It's always been that way. The remake, the comics, video games, and even the new tv show all follow that rule still. It's not said, but it's pretty obvious when you look at what happens to each one right before they become possessed.
So Ash is able to cut his hand off without getting an open wound? Or is that just because he is the choosen one? Don't get me wrong, I ask honestly, I think the open wound explanation is the best I have heard. But if that's the case, Raimi just made a big miss with the unpossesion by amputation. Or Ash actually have some special "choosen one" powers.
@Carnivorus Exactly, he did get an open wound. Or do you mean there is a time limit, deadites can't posses someone until after a certain time after an open wound has been open? BTW, a burn wound is also an open wound, just not a bleeding wound. Still an open wound in the skin.
I actually have a different theory of why the continuity is a mess between each movie. I'd love to know what you think of it, Decker. So, here it is: each time the Necronomicon is defeated, it "retcons" reality to work better in it's favor and therefor alters the timeline - so while familiar, it also varies. This also explains the 2013 movie establishing it's impossible to burn the book - it's something it has been learning from the first movie. So, in other words? All the movies (and the show) are in canon. All inconsistensies can be excused due to the Necronomicon messing with the timeline to adapt and learn how to survive - it also explains why it changes it's appearance. So... what do you think of this theory? This will probably always be my own personal headcanon for it at least. XD
the new series has in a way confirmed your theory, even without material from "army of darkness" the book has a new way of being killed and can warp the whole world congrats on thinking ahead
when i saw this at a very young age.... Ash's reflection jumps out and grabs him... that scared the shit out of me as a kid. I DID NOT expect it at all.
I have a great memory of watching this on HBO in 1991. The best summer of my life. 16 years old and had like 3-4 girlfriends that summer. Man I miss the 90's. I knew after 5 minutes of watching this that it was something special. It being on cable I started watching it about 5-10 minutes after it started so I had no idea what it was about. This was my favorite movie for a long time.
I honestly consider this film to be the best of the Evil Dead franchise in my opinion. It had a perfectly balanced mix of horror and comedy, the practical effects were freaking awesome, the acting was entertainingly cheesy, and the action and suspense were on point. Of course, there is the glaring continuity difference in the beginning, as in the first film, there were five people in the car rather than just Ash and his girlfriend, and the first film also had a more creepy atmosphere as well. But considering this flick is both horror AND comedy, it's to be expected that the eeriness wouldn't be as potent. Other than that though, The Evil Dead 2 was still a really entertaining film with just enough enjoyable value to it that makes it a classic to me. If I were to give this movie a rating between 1 to 10, it would be a really solid 9.

@ 17:37 the chain of the pendant is shaped like a skull....not many people ever notice that little detail. I've been a fan of this film ever since it was released...my all time favourite! Good review btw!
Maybe some Evil Dead expert can clear these things up for me. When Ash and Annie are looking at the pages, and Ash gets a weird look on his face, and Annie asks him what's wrong, and he says he feels like someone just stepped over his grave, what was the signifigance of that? And what was the deal with the skeleton dressed like Ash in the cellar?
4 years late i know, but It's an old expression when people can expect death or can see their own death coming or are just feeling spooked by the situation they're in. The Skeleton in the celler was the remains of Jake when he gets dragged down there and eaten.
@@jrj3505 Ah ok thanks! Yea, come to think of it, Jake was wearing similar clothes, that makes a lot more sense than the crazy stuff I was coming up with, like bodies left from alternate timelines, etc.
@@PageofLegend No problem and well consideing the book can open up dimensions and portals to different timelines, you could even be correct about that. Not much is stated about the kandarian demons and such other than i heard they maybe from ancient Sumeria but not sure.
I love the idea that you can start evil dead 2 right when he gets attacked in the forest and it will line up perfectly with the ending of the first one.
They reversed the film for some reason. The cut on his cheek and wound on his eyebrow is on the right side of his face, but when he grabs the pages they are on the left side. But in the next scene they are on the right again.
I am very certain by this point that the possession simply works by willpower. Getting hurt or being knocked out by the force of the Hulk I'd imagine would lead to some weakness in the mind for a short bit at least. It would explain the inconsistencies as one with stronger will would have a more difficult time of being possessed after getting hurt. Dead people have no will to speak of to fight possession.
I hadn't even seen or heard of the first Evil Dead when I found this on the video shelves... It was 1987 or early 1988 when released on VHS and my father and I were looking for a good horror film. Well we definitely found it with this. My friends had never seen it and it was just straight up amazing. Not to mention hilarious. I was only 9 or 10 at the time... I miss the 80s so much.
The prologue always bothered me since it was just Ash and Linda, when in the first movie it was Ash, Linda, Cheryl, Shelly, and Scotty. For the sake of continuity, I'll have to assume that Scotty, Shelly, and Cheryl arrived sometime in the night after Linda's death and the events of their deaths, possession, and burning of the book transpired from there
I view the posession trigger as something like low willpower, not physical injury. Which is why Ash managed to fight off the posession, and why the spirits torment the living, to break their will.
I gave some thought to the Evil Dead possessions and I think it is just a matter of willpower when it comes to the characters. Whenever characters turn into deadites it's usually when they are wounded and are close to death or are emotionally stressed to the breaking point.
Did anyone think that Sam Raimi kind of paid homage to Mad Max 2 near the end of the movie with Ash's grey streak in his hair and shotgun. Well thats what I saw (at least) lol
I think that if you die in those woods you become possessed and with how hard Ed was thrown it may have killed him. Although I’m with you on the confusion of why the daemon eye in the mouth didn’t posses Bobbie Joe.
Hey Decker shadows I know this is an old video but lol I have to say your content is awesome. Also the possession thing that happens in Evil Dead happens because many of the events that happen would lead to the death of the person. For example in the beginning of the movie when Ash crashed into the tree that fall would have killed him if there was no puddle that made it easy for the demonic force to take control
The evil dead trilogy analysis:The evil dead 1981- an enjoyable flic with some great gore and stop-motion effects Evil dead 2: dead by dawn 1987- probably one of, if the, best horror comedies ever madeThe army of darkness a.k.a evil dead 3 1992- a cheesy action, comedy that never cesses to impress and humour me.
I think if you die in the woods then you are possessed, ergo the first guy thrown into the wall died, (probably via punctured organs by something sticking out of the wall.) Linda in this one also probably died the same way, the male friend from the first one also became possessed upon death. Bobby Joe and Ash’s sister were probably strangled by the trees in the woods. Now as for ash’s possession and that of the original Linda I believe that it also can work like an infection if you are actively wounded by them (preferably by a pice of wood or a part of themselves) but I suppose since they are still alive the possession is only temporary until they are touched by sunlight. (Because they are alive.)
It's funny that the evil force in the house can make things come to life, but it doesn't bother bringing the boomstick to life, or at least the shells when he fires them.
