Selfish father blocks photo line during Conway Scenic 50th Anniversary Charter (read desc.)

  • Allow me to give the full story of this as there’s a decent amount of moving parts. So basically, this guy, his kid and his wife went to the Conway Scenic for their 50th Anniversary celebration on August 3rd. They attended the photo charter that was put on by the Conway Scenic and the 470 Club, with a bus that would follow the mock freight train to several film locations where photographers and railfans would get off and film/take pictures of the train passing by. During one of the stops, the dads’ shot was apparently blocked by someone. Several of my friends and I asked everyone on the charter if they had blocked his shot and all of them said no, and even if they did, they weren’t made aware of it. So, this guy decides that he is going to stand in the shots of literally the entire charter. After being asked nicely to move just out of frame, he didn’t budge. Even the charter director himself couldn’t get him to move and as a result, several of our shots were affected by his selfish behavior. After the charter director asked him to move, he walked back to the photo line defeated. We all applauded him for doing his best. That was when mama bear stepped in, saying “You all just made a mistake because I’m gonna stand right here!” “Here” being the edge of the platform and practically right next to the rail. The charter director walked back and asked her to kindly get back on the bus, which I believe she did. The charter tried for a second attempt at a runby but junior and his asshole father stood right in the same spot, now almost fully blocking our shots. It’s a real shame, the mother seemed to be quite nice beforehand. She was very polite and even when a friend of mine accidentally took her seat on the bus, she made no big deal about it and simply moved to a different seat. Apart from this little moment, the rest of my trip went very well! I hope that everyone can learn a lesson from this video and I wish nothing but the best to everyone ELSE on the charter and the Conway Scenic Railroad as a whole. I want to especially thank the director of this photo charter for being an amazing guy. I hope, wherever he is, he is doing well and, apart from this little hurdle, had smooth running on the charters. Anyway, I hope you all enjoyed laughing at this buffoon and I hope you all will tune back in for the full video from that day.
    Keep ‘em rolling!
    -Ben

"If I don't get my shot, no one gets their shot." Very juvenile, elementary-school behavior. Maybe even pre-school level.
Irony, by staying where he is, the shot loses the framing of the depot and the curve that will show more of the train.
The obvious intent to anger/frustrate others is obvious when the request of the organizer is blown off as well.

@@MWilliston as someone who was present at this charter, we kindly asked the people blocking our shots to move out of the way. we repeatedly kindly asked for them to move and they did not. we asked the charter director to help since we did not want to engage any further and have more authority take care of it, so we could have a smooth rest of the ride back to Conway. this is where this youtuber started filming as to show what interaction would come of it. photo charter etiquette says that everyone should make sure that no shots are obstructed and everyone gets a fair shot of the train. this train was marketed as a "photographer/railfan" special. not to say these folks aren't railfans or photographers by any means, but if they are, they should at least learn proper etiquette before returning to another charter. it is lucky this was not a professional charter by folks such as Mass Bay RRE, or the 470 Club, as the organizers there are much more strict on this type of situation.

Sucks it happened on a paid charter, I can't imagine they'll be allowed back anytime soon. I've been fortunate to either be on trips that had a very tight rein on squaring up photo lines before the subject train made its pass, or trips where some polite prodding had the desired result. Seems to me like folks who actively try to ruin others' shots on trips like that find themselves railfanning in unintended solitude real fast.
