Story behind the song
Hello/Lacrimosa (or "Chello," as it has affectionately been called in the studio) is a musical experiment bridging 18th-century spiritualism and 21st-century secularism. Imagine Mozart and Adele in the same room in an intense co-write session, quill and pen in hand, respectively. Picturing this hypothetical hangout helped to spark the creative combination of the two.
Haven't heard "Lacrimosa" from Mozart's Requiem? It is a powerful piece of music. Listen here: • Claudio Abbado - Moza...
As you can hear, both tunes' divergent traits presented challenges. One wallows in a wide, painstakingly minor 12/8 time and the other drives a poignant bi-polar major/minor common time. One draws its power from the fullness of a grand chorus and orchestra, the other from the isolation of a lone voice and piano. One conforms to age-old counterpart canon and musical theory, while the other is conveyed via verse/chorus pop song parlance. However, they share the same fundamental feeling -- "Lacrimosa" (meaning "weeping" or "tearful") mournfully bemoans spiritual death, while "Hello" gripes about relationship regrets. Different centuries. Different realms. Same emotion. Perhaps we aren't as far from our predecessors as we think we are.
You'll hear towards the end of the tune an attempt by both motifs to meet in the middle as the two textured melodies intertwine. In their respective stories both plead for reconciliation. Neither seemed to find it apart, but together they sing of a second chance.
The sounds you hear were created by 100 tracks of acoustic and electric cello, an instrument that has been emoting for centuries - an apt candidate for the task of tying together "Hellocrimosa" (our alternate affectionate title).
This video was filmed at one of our favorite locations: Tuacahn Amphitheatre, utilizing different patterns and settings of giant mirrors, diffused light, and some very cold fog. How is the camera not reflected in the mirrors? Simple. Magic!

It seems that nobody can get away from this song.
true...but to me, this remake is really refreshing and puts a new spin on it
+K IRA
The PG versions are always way better than the original songs.
It seems to me that instrumental is better for most songs
+K IRAhow's it going in hell with L huh?
this is a hello from the other side btw
hello
The Piano Guys can make me fall in love with songs I don't remotely like otherwise
Right?
Same here
Yay! I'm not the only one.
+Gatlyn Anderson Yes, like What makes you beatufiul from 1D. Their version is amazing. The original is... well not amazing at all.
I aggre
It will never cease to amaze me how beautiful music can sound.
Me neither. Every time I play my violin I'm in another world.
+Stephen Guilbert and then the REAL music..not the one made behind a desk ;D
+Sourya M keep up with the times
why should i >_>
+Stephen Guilbert Just wait until machines detect what mood you're in and instantly play the right sound waves to make you as happy as you can be.
Best version of Adele's "Hello" ever!!!!! And the combination of this song and Lacrimosa - Mozart was genius! I love you guys!!!
These covers really bring back the beauty into modern music. Not that Adele isnt a beautiful singer but in a day and age where most music comes from a computer I really appreciate these.
This channel is definitely a great way to take a break from all that techno music which does sound cool and all, but a few clicks on the computer here and there doesn't even come close to the heart and soul you can clearly see being put in by Jon and Steve when they compose and perform these masterpieces.
I wish more people would learn to appreciate classical instruments. It's where the music that we know today come from. It's a completely different feeling when you hear the song like this.
If you think electronic music is limited to simply a few clicks here and there you are quite mistaken. Classical music can be just as mindless, easy, and boring depending on the composer.
Genre isn't the issue - the composition itself is, and quite frankly (and sadly) too many EDM artists don't do much "composition," if any.
+Pakken11 Maybe it was narrow minded of me to just assume that electronic music is simple and no thought goes into it, but I just find it easier to appreciate people like the piano guys and the music they make, granted I'm no genius when it comes to classical music (or music in general) hence why I have no clue how boring classical music can be.
I do see what you mean about composition though, and how it effects the quality of music, whether classical or electronic, and don't get me wrong, there are some awesome EDM songs that just get me moving, but this channel made me realize what I was missing out on, in terms of the high quality classical composers
+Pakken11. 112346687790
Can we just take a moment and appreciate how the bow epic-ly glows in the dark?
Yes!!! I WANT ONE!
+abi King Who doesn't want one? And I don't even play the cello! I play piano, so how about glowing piano keys! Yes?
Torilinn Cwanek If you're talking about color glowing piano keys, then you're a kid, but white glowing keys are cool.. How bout making the cello strings glow too? Hopefully that doesn't take much friction to do...
Who knew Mozart and Adele could be made into a piece of beautiful art. Absolutely breath taking!
While taking the difficulties of Adele‘s As-Major for Cello and pepper of Mozart‘s 12/8 beat.
It’s hard to play without loosing orientation - in both: beat and tonality …
so one might be thankful for the baseline, played by another cello, and silky interaction to improvise on… so why not performing on a loopstation instead? Tough.
I think this might be their most clever overlapping of two pieces of music to date. It's not just another one of these where they start with one song and switch halfway through, I can hear lacrimosa throughout. It's subtle and unique.
Its brillient but they are always besting themselves.
I love music mashup like these. Taking something made and making something new out of older puzzle piece cut outs.
While trying to understand what’s going on I realised some music theory in that:
It’s played in terms of a loop station, underlined by the video in all those great symbols.
The pieces itself are both written in a very rare 12/8 beat, forming a long beat line over 12 notes.
So while each of those might hide the beat structure yet a bit, performing at once in a loop points this out.
More than that the text or content is about hello/good bye/ funeral in a loop repetition, which might contain religious beliefs, can’t let go, being afraid that nothing lasts forever…
just huge.
@@sonocke I'm just a consumer of music, and I might have a good "pallet" but you seem to know the math behind it. is it your profession? do you compose or write music?
Dont u guys ever stop this is unreal its magic it feels like fantasy
***** dont u like it?
'
it feel like a cock in my arse first the first time... so good that it hurts
+chow main well that escalated quickly
For real man. How do they do it. They are amazing!!! To say the least.
Steve Nelson and the whole Piano guys group, are some of the most down to earth people I have ever worked with. I spent a week in Salt Lake City on the Batman shoot, great times I will always remember, hope to cross paths again soon.
+Harold Tapley That must have been an incredible experience to work with them! Especially on that video. :)
Wow! you are so lucky!
+Souvik Saha Really he's such lucky not only to see them live but to work with them
Wait, they are involved in Batman soundtrack?????
they should hello you at least don't you think so ?
Turned out amazing guys!!! As always, mind blown!
+devinsupertramp Just trying to keep up with you over there, but it doesn't seem to be working. :-) Love you brother!
+ThePianoGuys you guys are extremely amazing at what you do. I'm so glad I found this channel!!
+devinsupertramp were you the one filming this?
+Skandranon Banefire Nope, just read the description. Same team as always and a great job!
+ThePianoGuys my head teacher loves your music she puts you on nealy EVRY assembly
I love the pure joy on Steven's face. I think if what you do doesn't give you that feeling, you're either not doing it right or you should try something else
Cello from the other side!
😐😐😐... Funny 😂😂
+Jenna Ostroff I found this way too funny, thanks for making my day xD
YES!!!!!!! LOL :)
Best!
+Jenna Ostroff Get out.
I WONDER WHY THERE'S 1K PEOPLE WHO DISLIKED THIS MASTERPIECE ARE THEY DEAF?
they are simply trolls that doesn't have a life
+markhanna agreed
that is under 1% of those who liked/disliked. That's a very small amount. And it's okay if people don't like it, don't preference-shame. Not everyone likes the same music as you.
I totally agree
Even deaf people enjoy masterpieces. Just ask Beethoven
You can see how much he loves the beauty he gets out of his instrument. Touches the center of my heart and lifts up my day.
4 years later im watching this again and all i can do is smile it absolutely touches my heart.
Incredible level! It's very organic, and sensual!
Thank you very much!
I never clicked a video so fast in my life...i think i broke my finger...and the mouse...this song is worth the pain =w=)

Maybe the mouse had a disease already that made it weak. You should not use a diseased mouse, thats how the bubonic plague spread.

+Kevin Smith mouse and rats are not the same thing
Several years later and still coming back to this on a semi-frequent basis. Arrangement, production, and performance are all just incredible...
This is incredible! Wonderful work fellas.
+Paint Jon!!! :) so many videos so far this year =)
HEY JON COZART!!!!!!
Omg I love you Two talented people
HI JON !
Right? I'm a huge Mozart and Adele fan. This is a dream come true.
I LOVE IT
I just love it
It's amazing
I hope they later do 7 years
It's my favorite song
that would be awesome
Yes!!! Do 7 years!!!
My two favorite songs of all time together. When I saw this, I almost had a heart attack. Omg, this is my favorite Mozart requiem, and Adele is my life. I'm dying. The Piano Guys... you're AMAZING.
The cello is my favorite instrument. This whole video and aesthetic and music is just so gorgeous.
hola
What a magical masterpiece! The cinematography, the music, the precision, all of it was perfect. I loved every moment! Thank you for presenting this to us!
I think all artists that pianoguys have made their songs as covers should be proud . Only the chosen songs can turn into such a beautiful music
Lee. YS they can turn crap into good music.
Nikita Chen oh ya make sense too lol
that moment when music gives you wings
next moment both legs are broken, and wings are gone, because the great song has ended
That sounds like a Red Bull commmercial.
"Music gives you wiiiiiiings!"
How the hell does somebody composes a piece like that! I mean, its perfection. Classical music with Pop. I think Mozart, Beethoven and all the other composers of the classical era would be very proud of both their legacy and the piano guys.
Edwin Soto
not really, just no
Exactly the opposite. Our music has been getting worse and worse since the middle of the Romantic era after Chopin's era, and possibly the Classic or Baroque eras, even.
Obviously, Mozart and his contemporaries would be disappointed in our music today.
como es que logran esos efectos tan increíbles wow yo la verdad disfruto mucho de su música, me encanta.
This is incredible. Beautifully done once again!
Your best work is the blending of new and old compositions.
I can not resist a cello , the tears fall heavily. Fantastic! Exciting! Speechless! ♥
The beauty of the cello.
Years later and I am still cycling back to hear this on a fairly regular basis. This arrangement is just... it's just so damn good, and these guys crush everything they do.
I can hear every single word of the song in it. This is incredible
Quite possibly the most perfect piece of music I have ever heard.
Pure raw talent, to everyone involved in this. The music, the imagery. Just wonderful. Thank you for this, what an awesome way to start the weekend!
the cello is the best sounding orchestra instrument by far
Wow, I absolutely love how all ur work is soo unique and original! The way it was definitely “hello” by Adele, but u could here the Lacrimosa in it all the way through! Ur honestly my favourite artists, far more then all these typical pop stars (Ariana grande, Taylor swift, u name it), love u guys’ work!
I loved it! A great combination of two songs. It flowed so beautifully. This shows just how beautiful the cello really is.
So lovely music, Mozart and Adele with cello-the best music you'll have!!!
Amazing video! :) I loved it!! This is one of my favorite songs and you made it even better! :) At 3:00 the flashing was AWESOME!! :)
+The Piano Gal Yeah, that was cool! I love the light saber-like bow!
+The Piano Gal - Another great video!
+The Piano Gal - No piano in this one! I wonder if Jon was taking a nap?
+The Piano Gal - Wish they could make videos more often!
+The Piano Gal - :)
I love how he would also play the cello like a guitar! Genius!
Just as the bows are glowing in the dark, the same way, music is a light in this dark world! Thanks for blessing us with your musical creative power❤😊
Amazing and hauntingly beautiful. Definitely has the ‘tingle factor’ for me. Thanks for uploading and introducing me this wonderful music

+Shaye Scott IKR? This is amazing quality!
I love how you guys find a way to "marry" current popular music to classical music. It's awesome!
I will have this song in my wedding. love it!
Me too!!
I'm a 12 year old violinist and I'm working my way up...I want to play as good as you!

And these kids have more talent than me... *sigh*
Well, um... nevermind me.
+A sharpener you and me both my talent is computers if that counts
This is how exactly i imagine Mozart meeting Adele. Great Job PianoGuys
I listened to this song with some Bose headphones (which made the sound quality superb!). I just close my eyes and let it clear my mind. I suffer from anxiety, so whenever I need some time alone, I just listen to this. I've not long discovered ThePianoGuys. I love all their songs, but this one really just gives me a really nice feeling after listening to it. Covers like this are honestly just amazing.
If only i could like this video more than once
+David Bailey if*
+Alan Melloni oh wow lol my bad thx

+Dan Peal omg lay off! jk, er'y body on here way smarter THAN me lol
Just the right mix of haunting and passion!! Love this remix!!
I got chills so hard I felt warm for I don't even know how long. Amazing truly amazing!!
This is how you take a song & turn it into a stunningly triumphant piece of art. Absolutely beautiful!
I can see how much passion he has for music as i look at his face! Its so heartwarming! :DDD
Exquisite. The electric cello has gorgeous sound.
Its much better that the original song..!!
+Jazz Nair i agree
Agreed
you are so right I think adel is a terrible singer
+Leah Skidgel yep 100%
OK, let's not go crazy
Gotta say I love the lights on the bows. It adds an interesting dynamic to an amazing song.
WOW AMAZING!!!! i have like no words to say but amazing!!! theres just so much talent that blows my mind!!!!
Hannah Rose Browne Yes they are really good!!!
***** that is true but yes still amazing!
It really doesn't matter what song or genre they play.
The Piano Guys play music that is therapeutic.
So great, love you guys :)
Okay, after watching this one for the ... well, I won't admit how many times... it might be one of my top 5 favorites! :-) Great work with the mirrors, lighting(safely!), & camera "magic"... After watching the 1st time or two, I started to notice cool subtle details... the apt change of wardrobe, just a little bit of dust on the surface of the "classical" cello, the reflection of the lighted bow on the surface of the "modern" cello, & the way the light hits just enough of Steve's face to see his emotion & love for the piece. I will admit that after stumbling upon The Piano Guys, I have a great deal more appreciation for how much emotion can come out of a piano and a cello! I am mesmerized by Jon's skillful fingers on the piano keys, and Steve's ability to make me emotionally feel the music from the cello! Thank you so much to all of you!
So talented it's a shame they are not known by a lot of people. I stumbled across them thanks to TH-cam and so glad I did.
Do full lacrimosa love u guys great work 😘
Listening to this really relieves so much stress! Especially since I have finals going on xD Great work!
The reverb and blend of the cello is amazing!
CELLO FROM THE OTHER SIIIIIIDE
I'VE PLAYED THIS SONG A THOUSAND TIIIIIIIME
I have a loss for words that was just so great
IM ALL ABOUT DA PUNSSS
Ether you stole this comment or you think inauthentically, either way I pity you.
OMG... hahahahahahahahahahahahahah
I'M DEADDDDDD 😂😂
"I Listen to this All The Time" xD
This was an amazing song, but the camera work was absolutely incredible as well. The shots and lighting were perfect and whoever is behind that camera should be commended for that.
this deserves as many views as the original music video
no. this deserves more. lol
when this interpretation will receive more views than hello, then we will know for sure that ppl's grade of intelligence has rose up
This makes me cry no matter how many times i listened to it.
Why can't I like this again! Every time I listen to it I want to hit the thumbs up button. :)
For the first time in 50 years, I can listening to Lacrimosa without wanting to gag. I had an overzelous music teacher that dissected and picked and plooped Mozart into shreds. Just this week I discovered Adele. What a combo! Dry, retching Mozart sweetened up with the juice of Adele!
cello it's me
My new favorite Piano Guys video! This arrangement gave me the chills it was so beautiful!
I want that bow. MAKE EVERYTHING GLOW!!!!!!
DEFINITELY
I hate to say it but among the piano guys, the cellist is my favourite :D
+Edward Kothalawala Me too! :)
+Edward Kothalawala haha you are not the only one :D
I only came here for Mozart's Lacrimosa anyone else?
Moi aussie.
Isaac Matthew ouiiiii
Désolé pour le erreur à aussi. Auto-correct.
Isaac Matthew calm down lol I only know a few words. I took French in my freshmen year of high school
+Damn lopez i came here because its a piano guys video
We truly live in the best time for music. Hundreds of years of history and an infinite future...
C’est ma fille qui m’a fait découvrir ce chef-d’œuvre...
Un vrai moment de bonheur !
Je prendre cette musique
Came back here after 7 years. This mix is still one of my favourite songs. God damn is this smooth!
That awesome my music teacher showed me this and I asked her what's this chanel's name and she told me and I'm now a subscriber thats awesome now I wanna play it
Lacrimosa in the beginning is just amazing.
🌸 Hello - Adele
Hello, it's me
I was wondering if after all these years you'd like to meet
To go over everything
They say that time's supposed to heal ya
But I ain't done much healing
Hello, can you hear me
I'm in California dreaming about who we used to be
When we were younger and free
I've forgotten how it felt before the world fell at our feet
There's such a difference between us
And a million miles
Hello from the other side
I must have called a thousand times
To tell you I'm sorry for everything that I've done
But when I call you never seem to be home
Hello from the outside
At least I can say that I've tried
To tell you I'm sorry for breaking your heart
But it don't matter it clearly doesn't tear you apart anymore
Hello, how are you?
It's so typical of me to talk about myself I'm sorry
I hope that you're well
Did you ever make it out of that town where nothing ever happened
It's no secret that the both of us
Are running out of time
So hello from the other side
I must have called a thousand times
To tell you I'm sorry for everything that I've done
But when I call you never seem to be home
Hello from the outside
At least I can say that I've tried
To tell you I'm sorry for breaking your heart
But it don't matter it clearly doesn't tear you apart anymore
Ooooohh, anymore
Ooooohh, anymore
Ooooohh, anymore
Anymore
Hello from the other side
I must have called a thousand times
To tell you I'm sorry for everything that I've done
But when I call you never seem to be home
Hello from the outside
At least I can say that I've tried
To tell you I'm sorry for breaking your heart
But it don't matter it clearly doesn't tear you apart anymore
Thank u for it
Am I the only one that's not a fan of Adele's "Hello"? This on the other hand, is beautiful.
You're not the only one.
You are probably deaf. I listen to mostly rap but Hello is legit as fuck.
repent
I think the lyrics are powerful, but random asf
+SpaceFlye i work retail. I liked it the first time but after hearing it 10 times in a hour I don't like it anymore
As fabulous as the music always is, I have to give them praise for the beautiful cinematography of the videos as well. It's as cool to watch as it is to hear.
This song was already beautiful but the lacrimosa makes this song so beautiful and graceful
You guys should do Counting Stars by One Republic!
I think the same
I love this song
I think they've done that. And if not 2Cellos may have done it idk
+Ashley Light They already have!! :)
+GracePetunia No, they've done Coldplay's 'A Sky Full of Stars', and One Republic's 'Secrets', but they haven't done Counting Stars.
I agree, I think they should do more One Republic. Their songs are very lyrical and transfer well to instrumental.
I'm a cellist myself and I would love to play like that one day it's amazing
+Bffs Bkc Me too!!
+RVMontecello what grade r u I'm working on my grade 5
I am a sophomore in high school :) I don't what grade that puts me in cello study, but I've learned the majority of The Piano Guys music by ear. I've posted a couple of videos on my channel if you want to check them out :) They were from a year ago, so I'm a lot better now
I wish I could be this good too
Hey Pianoguys, I have a question. How do you go about composing each one of your songs/arrangements? Does it all just come to you or do you go through several iterations? And do just you two compose it, or the whole group? Thanks for reading :)
I went to a concert of theirs and watched enough BTS videos to know! :) Al van der Beek writes music with both Jon and Steve in their arrangements. For this one in particular, it was most likely just Al and Steve, but for a piano and cello song, it's everybody except for Paul. Paul only does live performances and maybe singing, but he is more of a videographer more than anything. I hope that helped! :)
Thanks!!!:D
I also went to a consert of their's, and they also said their kids help pick music's 😂😂!
I love the piano.
+Alain Bruno me too
+Alain Bruno best cover for the song Hello by Adele
+Alain Bruno it's beautiful to listen to
Me too!
+andrew mcsweeney super awkward if they actually meant the violin.
Never get tired of this...
I have never in my life heard something better than this piece of art. I always picture myself playing it to the people I love and dream about how their expressions would be like.
How can anyone dislike this masterpiece?
This song is absolutely amazing! It takes me to another world, makes me so relaxed and happy. Thank you! You are truly an inspiration
Never clicked anything so fast....ever
yup, same here 😁
+bavly osama me too!!
+LpsStrawberryFilms - you da best. you loyal.
Same. I've been refreshing my page for the past 5 hours
+Chris Fox - I just randomly clicked on the subscriptions tab, and it was uploaded 27 seconds ago. :P It already had 1,000 views or so.
Thats what I get for not scrolling back in time, almost missed out on this beauty, I love Lacrimosa.❤
i wonder how long (in hours/days) it takes to edit all the shoots to create the overlaping and finished product we see?
It has to be a lot. I mean, he has to play the song all the way through for each part you hear. Then, any reshoots if he wasn't satisfied with what he heard or saw. Then, all the video editing. I just can't imagine. This was really beautiful.
Wouldn't surprise me if it was 100 hours, or more.
@@AG-mt3xs No he doesn't, in all music videos the audio is beeing synchronised in post production from a studio recording ... The shots are all planned in advance so there isn't much more raw material than what we saw (apart from reshoots where he or the team weren't happy with how the scene looked)
Never ever heared such perfect harmony in 2 songs. masterpiece
