    It’s so relaxing to see what you do in your workshop. Very professional and thorough.
    You make it all look very straight forward. But I’m sure it’s more complex than at first view.

    Hi boys , thanks for the video. Is it possible to test engine oil to verify if fuel / anything else is present indicating a problem (before it breaks!) ?
    Have you heard of this? I see a mech in Florida who regularly tests his oil after a change to see if there's anything bad in it.
    Additionally, would it be possible to "trawl" a magnet on a flexi rod in through the oil drain hole to see if it "picks up" any metal pieces ? Nice to find out before removing the sump. Is this a really poor idea?

    Hi Guys thanks for the video very well filmed and explained.
    I'm figuring out that I have a very similar problem on my AXD too (low oil pressure) but less bad since i dont think my piston is missing bits and the oil jet looks fine from the bottom...
    In my opinion, another reason for this mess apart from the dodgy water pump, is actually the plate that you guys put back at 14:00 : Surge lock 070115220C, it's clearly missing the "cantilever " side just like on mine, that would explain how the oil stick got ripped of too.. what you think ?

      @konni6694 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In theory, it's not particularly difficult. Accessibility is okayish but it requires three special tools (around 50-60€). In practice, the pre 2005 pumps have a very nasty tendency to fuse to the block and that's when things can get really nasty.

    • @richardsutton01
      @richardsutton01 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@konni6694 It's not particularly difficult if the engine is out, as ours is at the moment. The special tools are not required as it's not difficult to just knock something together out of common workshop tools which will do the job. However, I would think twice about doing it with the engine still in place unless the pump had been recently fitted and you were therefore 100% sure that everything would free off easily.

      If the head was skimmed with different size headgasket, the cam gear backlash is a must. If it has no backlash the gear will get very hot and damage.
      For important stuff like timing, injection, all internals i like to use torque wrench even if reusing old bolts(checked for stretch, otherwise replaced), Autodata is very good and has a lot of important torque specs.

    • @kristianvrum8979
      @kristianvrum8979 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well, this engine is reliable in the sense that you can rely on that it'll cost you a lot of money!
      The main problem with this engine is that the seatings for the injectors wear out, and you'll need a new cylinder head. I'm actually quite surprised that the guys in the video doesn't seem to know this.
      What happens is this: when the engine runs the injectors actually moves a little in their seatings, and over time this leads to a leakage of fuel into the cylinder head. It'll also make the engine hard to start, and you'll begin to notice this from somewhere around the 150000 km mark and upwards.
      The internal fuel leak will over time thin out the oil, and this will of course lead to excessive wear on camshaft lobes, crankshaft bearing surfaces, and cylinder walls. One solution is then to replace the cylinder head with all moving parts, and just hope that the condition of the crankshaft bearings and cylinder walls aren't too bad. The other solution is a complete new engine...
      Be sure to replace water pump while you're at it, because any leakage of water from the pump will also end up in the engine oil. If you haven't replaced the couplings on alternator and AC-compressor, it might be wise to do them as well.
      And just to be clear about this: you'll need a brand new cylinder head, and a refurbishing (like they do in this video) is false economy at it's worst!
      If I needed do this job again on my car I'd probably fit the bridge clamps on the injectors to prevent/reduce injector seat wear (Google "T5 PDE-brücke"). Actually, I think that I might retrofit these to my engine anyway, as it's only done appx. 30000 km since it had it's head replaced. Keep in mind that the intake has to come off to be able to remove the cylinder head cover, and this is a costly process in itself (about EUR1000 here in Norway), and it certainly pays off in the long run to renew all involved parts (glow plugs, glow plug cables, all sensors, injector cabling etc.) when you have the chance.

      @@kristianvrum8979 Oh finaly someone who knows thing or two about this engine. They also havent touched timing gears bearings. Officialy its not a serviceable part but be sure they are worn out with oil filled with shit like that. Then as they said "may go". Last time I did this one I had to had CNC made gear holders since those were shot as well. Why TF did they put timing case cover on AFTER putting on the head? That will never seal properly. What in the hell is that grease on MLS gasket? You seen that done where? lol There are shaft seals and bearing for alternator shaft, did not touch those. You will come back to that in car? Would gladly watch that cursing session. This engine is speacial in a sense that it makes like half a milion kilometers but then you need to refurbish it proper, no expense spared or it will come and bite you in the ass hard. Almost everything is hard to get to. This repair was exactly that, small details that may come back soon.

    Why did the engine have the low oil pressure ? im just doing a mates 174hp T5 engine. Needs liners and pistons .... tell me why cant you rebore to plus 0.5 as there is pistons available ?

      @@VAGTechnic Ahh ok this engine im doing had that before the liner problem full of silicone. This time the water pump bolts worked out and WP gear was loose putting water in oil. Took the sump off loads of bits in the sump. Took the engine out checked bearing all trashed thou crank good just needed micro polishing. Then seen NB 1 coating had come off the cylinder walls so engine was stripped. Just finished cleaning engine ready for new liners and pistons. Why cant you rebore the currant bores rather than new liners ?

    When you say it had low oil pressure, was the “stop” “low oil pressure” light coming on the dash at 1600rpm or was there some other warning or indication? I have a 2.5 AXE which is showing a stop engine low oil pressure light only when driving at 1600rpm when engine is hot, I paid a shop to diagnose the problem, they said the ECU wasn’t showing any low oil pressure codes and the sensor tested fine. But without fail, after 30 minutes to 1 hour of driving, if I pass up or down through 1600rpm slowly I will receive that warning light on the dash. Fresh oil, correct level on dipstick. I just want to know if it’s likely if I have a partially blocked oil pickup, worn oil pump or worst case scenario worn bearings requiring a rebuild, I have already spent a large amount of money on new cams/buckets, refurbed injectors, fitted injector brace, new tandem pump, new cast exhaust manifold etc and I really hope I don’t need to rebuild the engine now but need to diagnose by removing sump. Just curious what signs of low oil pressure engine was showing. How did the crank and rod bearings actually look and how did the cylinder walls look?

    • @VAGTechnic
      @VAGTechnic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It was random , we thought it might be the oil pressure switch , change that , check oil pressure from there but it happens again , so we took off the sump and find what you seen

    • @FiShPiG6
      @FiShPiG6 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VAGTechnic thank you for the reply, mine is very consistent at 1600rpm only. I’m hoping it is a weird quirk and a partially blocked pickup is causing a momentary low oil pressure reading at a set 1600rpm oil pressure checkpoint but I’m afraid what I will find when I remove the sump. Only one way to find out. Thank you again

    Isn’t it cheaper to replace the engine by a second hand one ? Instead of reparing this one ?
    If you count new parts, cleaning time, desassembly and assembly time ? And all the space it takes in your shop thant can’t be used for an other repair…
