The book "Bias Cut Blueprints: a Geometric Method for Clothing Design and Construction" details sewing fabric yardage into a bias tube, like you did, and making dresses top and pants from the tubes. But I never would have thought to do this to fabric to facilitate cutting out the pattern pieces for bias garment. Brilliant!
Bias tape can also be cut using the same method to make a bias tube and just cut the bias tape width in a spiral around the tube. As a costumer I kept bias tubes in popular colors and just trimmed off a length as needed.
Delivered! In somewhere near 60 years of sewing, I’ve never been fond of bias, and now all I can think about is finding a pattern that makes the most use of bias! So glad I found your video!
DELIVERED!!!! I love bias cut. All of you remember to hang the garment overnight (I leave it two days) before hemming. I haven’t seen this mentioned in any videos I have watched about sewing, but it is vital to the final drape. You may find one side of your garment is longer than the other. You did NOT make a mistake. Thereʼs a technical reason for this, I am sure. Anyway, even out the bottom and continue.
Thanks 💕 You are quite right. The technical reason is related to the grain and the weft. They both behave differently, so the true bias is in fact, a little different in the opposite way. It's hard to explain on a comment, but I might explain this better on a video. Cheers 😊
Delivered! I tried it by hand-sewing along with two small pieces of fabric as I watched the video. I’m so proud that we have a world-class TH-cam sewing expert right here in Toronto!
You are entertaining while educating us on much appreciated sewing techniques that save time and money!!! I don’t think you’re silly at all. Thank you for all you teach us. ❤️
I wish you had online sewing courses or would write a book so I could keep for reference. You’re the sewing goddess that set my path down the road of bias cuttings & I’ll never turn back. Thank you! Oh and you’re looking marvelous darling 🫶🏽
Omg! You're so right - I want to run to my stash and make something on the bias!!! DELIVERED! I've been sewing for over 50 years and I LOVE learning new things that make sewing easier!!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏
DELIVERED!!! OMG! This really DOES blow my mind! I am 66yo and first had a needle and thread in my hand at 3yo. I have NEVER seen or heard of this technique, how has this been hidden from me all these years? TY for putting this out there. 🤟
I love it! I especially like the reassurance that a lot of professionally made garments will have those seams. Ive considered piecing fabric together to sew on the bias before but thought it would look unprofessional so i just resigned myself to wasting a lot of fabric or just not sewing things on the bias. No more! I am so excited, this video definitely delivered
Delivered! In 2024! This technique is amazing. I have been so scared to use this amazing silky fabric I have and now I feel like I can get going on the cutting and sewing! Thank you so much for this!!❤
I have sewn a very long time. but this is one of the GREATEST tips I have ever seen. Especially to cut waste when making something on the BIAS. Thank you so much.
OMG. I have watched this video about 10 times, and I am EAGERLY AWAITING your upcoming 'Demystifying Bias' video(s). I must confess, I did it wrong over and over- about every possible way lol! I didn't understand that the first thing you did was take one raw edge, fold it in half, and sew it 'to itself.') Finally I figured it out. I would love to hear more about how you lay out your patterns. You are a wonderful teacher, thorough, honest and funny. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. A fan.
I learned how to true-up fabric yardage in junior high school Home Ec in 1968-69. It's true for me, too. I have not seen or read of it since then. I used it to square up some homemade curtains in a rental when we were first married. They draped much better after being squared up and resewn. This was long before cutting mats and rotary cutters and rulers. When a son was in junior high school, I showed him to square up fabric to make it square. The fabric was cheap and the print was still off, but at least it kept its shape as the grain was true. He was making a Qwillow blanket. A quilt blanket that folds up into its own pocket. You delivered. Truing the bias for cutting pattern pieces you have shared, I have never seen demonstrate or read about. Thank you so much. Thumbs up, shared and subscribed.
You ALWAYS deliver and this video was no exception! Thank you so so much for explaining this so clearly, and making it so much fun too. I can't wait to have a go at it myself.
yes, I have a bias dress (skirt part) to cut and don't feel like I have enough info to use this technique. I want to try it though. It seems there are a lot of layout decisions to make once you have the little house, and not clear how to make them. But I love it!
I’m not going to lie. I skipped immediately to the climax to see what the fuss was about without having heard any of the introduction. I was skeptical. I don’t see new tricks very often. IT BLEW MY MIND!!!! So good. Bravo!!
That is an amazing sewing tip, thank you! I am not sure where you are located, but here in the US you can usually find Dye Catchers, which look like dryer sheets. All they do is catch that extra dye and keep it from running onto other garments or smearing on the item in the wash. They are often on the shelf near the dryer sheets in the grocery store. I use them with all new garments or fabric now, and they have saved me so much frustration.
Shout Color Catchers are AMAZING!! They allow me to mix new fabric in (fully unfolded since I'll be ironing it anyways) with similar colors of old clothes in the way I plan to wash the finished garment. And if it can't wash, I don't buy it! 😂
Oh WOW! Thank you for sharing this. I'm excited to try this technique out on my next boxy top. I've done something similar to this with strips of fabric that were around 4 or more inches wide where you like sew two long strips together along one of the long sides. Then at the short end you fold down one corner to the long side making a 45 degree angle point and then sew spiraling the long side against other long side as you sew just like you did but on smaller strips of fabric. It ends up giving you a spiral bias candy strip like tube to work with. You can make a really fun spiral bias binding with it. But this technique you shared gives you "bias yardage" to work with. 🤗
Holy, moly! I've stayed away from bias cut dresses, skirts, etc. because it just seamed way to difficult. But the little house bias technique opens so many doors! Thank you for the video and for making me laugh.
I've always known about bias but probably avoided it, I've seen the similar methods for quilting with bias binding made by sewing it on a 45 degree angle but you DELIVER so much more.
Delivered! I tried to sew a skirt on the bias for my daughter years ago. It ended up in the trash after a lot of swearing. By the way... your hair looks fabulous!
Wow! How inspiring!! The creative juices are flowing. I’m a quilter who has been thinking of going back to sewing my own clothes again. As a teenager I had so much fun sewing all my clothes including coats and jackets. I loved sewing my clothing ideas. I wore most everything I sewed. It was so much fun! I’m glad I’ve found your channel. Thank you so much!!
OMG - DELIVERED!!!! I go for magic but if you just want to cave to the non magic crowd, then this technique is probably the best way to start embracing bias patterns. Thanks so much and I can't wait for the full bias story...🤣🥰from Nova Scotia

Oh my god...did you ever delivered! Wow, always shy aways from bias cut fabric but no more. Thanks to you and the little house bias it's time to sew bias garment!

Absolutely Brillant!!❤❤🎉🎉❤❤ Love that you are a fellow Canadian who shares your insider tips for difficult and daunting sewing techniques..its more approachable, with your humor, its makes me want to try bias cut patterns again...❤❤😊😊
I have been sewing for a very long time (over 50 years) and have never come across this technique. It is marvelous!! Garments made on the bias have a wonderful drape that cannot be duplicated by knits. The only caution I'd advise is to be careful in the weight of fabric chosen because it is does stretch out some which can make hemming a longer dress tricky. Also the garment should be stored carefully (just like knits) so it doesn't stretch out of shape. I had a blouse at one time that had bias sleeves and it was so nice to wear because it did not bind at the elbows like others can do. Yes, sewing on the bias can be tricky but the garment is so, so nice to wear.
Delivered!! Wow!! I've got lots of smallish pieces that can be 'joined' to make different things. Will be more fiddly than joining larger pieces, but can be used to make hanging pockets, inserts for bags and tops to wear while I'm gardening (who cares if the colours are different?). The weave direction (thread pulling) is genius. I'm learning to be brave! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, and doing it in such a fun and engaging manner. You are a born teacher. 💜
What a great technique. You always DELIVER. I love your video and I refer to these often when I,m not sure how to do a sewing technique. Thank you so much.
Love it! I learned this about 20 years ago. But rarely did I need to use it. Now I am glad you reminded me of it once again. Yaay I had forgotten. Love to see a tie making video one day. YOU DELIVERED YAAY!!
Delivered!!! Thank you for sharing. I really appreciate how you teach super useful techniques in a fun way and still manage to keep it short and to the point.
It looks like the same envelope-like folding used in Salwar making, but you are right this almost isn't on TH-cam and this is a lovely, lovely tutorial for this technique! Delivered!!! 100%
Hello! I'm new to your channel. When I saw your gravity-feed iron I thought "oh yeah, she can sew"! As to your putting the fabric on bias before laying out the pattern? Delivered!!!! Definitely delivered. Thanks for talking about having to be mindful of the seams when laying out the pattern pieces. I was wondering about that as I watched you seaming the fabric. Very good technique.
Wow. I need to watch a few more times to engrave your technique on my brain! When buying fabric to make a bias pattern, how would I figure out how much yardage to purchase? Thank you.
It takes time. It depends on the design. A good rule is to buy 1.25 yards per length. And 50% if it's bias. But keep in mind that wider garments need way more fabric. I hope this helps 😊
Delivered! I have seen some garments with that seam and wondered why it was made that way! I will have to save this video and try it. Thank you so much!
Ma'am, you always deliver. I hope the algorithm blesses the heck out you, because the world needs you!

Thanks so much! You are so kind 💕
Delivered! 100%. I feel like I have to try this to really wrap my head around it, but I'm convinced this is brilliant. Thank you very much for this. 😊
Hope you enjoy it! 🥰
What a great technique. You always DELIVER. I love your video and I refer to these often when I,m not sure how to do a sewing technique. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much! 💞
Love it! I learned this about 20 years ago. But rarely did I need to use it. Now I am glad you reminded me of it once again. Yaay I had forgotten. Love to see a tie making video one day.
YOU DELIVERED YAAY!!
Wonderful! I'm so glad 😊

Thank you for sharing.
I really appreciate how you teach super useful techniques in a fun way and still manage to keep it short and to the point.
Thank you so much!!!!! I’m very flattered ❤️
It looks like the same envelope-like folding used in Salwar making, but you are right this almost isn't on TH-cam and this is a lovely, lovely tutorial for this technique! Delivered!!! 100%
That's right, because the inseam is cut on bias. Cheers 😊
Thank you very much! Welcome to our sewing community 🥰
DELIVERED! you are amazing! Every time I watch one of your videos I learn something great!
Happy to hear that! Thanks 😊
Delivered! and lovely to see you again, so happy and amusnig as well as educational. Some how you had gone missing from my feed lately.
Thank you so sad! It has been a bit of a rough time here on the algorithm so I appreciate your support!
Delivered. Your enthusiasm is lovely! Thank you.
Wow, thank you! 😊
