    The book "Bias Cut Blueprints: a Geometric Method for Clothing Design and Construction" details sewing fabric yardage into a bias tube, like you did, and making dresses top and pants from the tubes. But I never would have thought to do this to fabric to facilitate cutting out the pattern pieces for bias garment. Brilliant!

      Bias tape can also be cut using the same method to make a bias tube and just cut the bias tape width in a spiral around the tube. As a costumer I kept bias tubes in popular colors and just trimmed off a length as needed.

    Delivered! In somewhere near 60 years of sewing, I’ve never been fond of bias, and now all I can think about is finding a pattern that makes the most use of bias! So glad I found your video!

      yes, I have a bias dress (skirt part) to cut and don't feel like I have enough info to use this technique. I want to try it though. It seems there are a lot of layout decisions to make once you have the little house, and not clear how to make them. But I love it!

    I love it! I especially like the reassurance that a lot of professionally made garments will have those seams. Ive considered piecing fabric together to sew on the bias before but thought it would look unprofessional so i just resigned myself to wasting a lot of fabric or just not sewing things on the bias. No more! I am so excited, this video definitely delivered

  • @lazygardens
    @lazygardens ปีที่แล้ว +15

    The advantage to this method, compared to laying out pattern pieces on the bias and piecing the large pieces, is that you don't have to do a lot of pinning and sewing on the bias edges.
    Piecing fabric to use less, or when a piece just won't fit is 100% TOTALLY HISTORICALLY ACCURATE ...

    DELIVERED!!!! I love bias cut. All of you remember to hang the garment overnight (I leave it two days) before hemming. I haven’t seen this mentioned in any videos I have watched about sewing, but it is vital to the final drape. You may find one side of your garment is longer than the other. You did NOT make a mistake. Thereʼs a technical reason for this, I am sure. Anyway, even out the bottom and continue.

    • @DowntownTailoring
      @DowntownTailoring  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks 💕 You are quite right. The technical reason is related to the grain and the weft. They both behave differently, so the true bias is in fact, a little different in the opposite way. It's hard to explain on a comment, but I might explain this better on a video. Cheers 😊

    Delivered! Thank you so much! I cannot wait for your video on bias sewing!!! (I have some questions: First one: How wide do you make your seam allowance? Once I used half an inch and they disappeared! Second: since the fabric shifts (and seam allowances „disappear“, how do you mark the stitching line? Thread marking? Now the last big question: some people say that you have to cut the pattern pieces so that they „mirror“ each other because the fabric will pull against the body: this means you always have to have a center front seam and center back seam 😫 Do you agree? Thank you so much! ❤❤❤❤❤

    That is an amazing sewing tip, thank you! I am not sure where you are located, but here in the US you can usually find Dye Catchers, which look like dryer sheets. All they do is catch that extra dye and keep it from running onto other garments or smearing on the item in the wash. They are often on the shelf near the dryer sheets in the grocery store. I use them with all new garments or fabric now, and they have saved me so much frustration.

      Wonderful! I'll be looking for it on Amazon as I'm in Canada. Thanks for the info 😊

      Shout Color Catchers are AMAZING!! They allow me to mix new fabric in (fully unfolded since I'll be ironing it anyways) with similar colors of old clothes in the way I plan to wash the finished garment. And if it can't wash, I don't buy it! 😂

    I wish I lived near you and your family and shop. I love that you need out on geometry and all things spatial! I'm still fighting my brain to understand how things will look aspect to aspect and from 2-d to 3... I wonder, do you teach at all? You could do a class that would be so fun. But I digress. Again, I wish I lived nearby but also thank you for the info. One day I'll get my mind around it. 😂💜 ❤

      Yes you technically can, but I have another technique I recommend over this one for bias tape. You can watch it in this video at 7:31 :

    It is magic. It's magic that someone thought of that technique. But my definition of magic isn't what most think of as magic. You're awesome and magical and thank you for sharing your knowledge and beautiful energy with is 🤯🙏🥰
