Josh - all of these recent videos have been absolutely monstrous - what a huge effort and transition you've had to go through from "just" gigging and throwing things on TH-cam every once in a while, to a full online setup and onslaught - it is a huge achievement to have set this up and to have kept the momentum going, when it would be much easier to throw the towel in and just hibernate until you can play out again - though I get that the laying low option probably wasn't even an option, financially! Just wanted to give you a massive thumbs up for your efforts - I hope your subscribers and views keep shooting up and that TH-cam becomes a proper money maker for you. Cheers!

Incredible playing Josh and great versatility. I know you as a blues player but I didn't know that you could hybrid pick like Johnny Hiland. That was an eye-opener. I think the reason you are so good is that you have a passion for music and all things guitar and great respect for all the great players from the past who have influenced us all.

It’s always weird to talk about who is the best, bc everybody has their own unique sound. But, I’m convinced that Danny was the greatest to ever do it. It boggles the mind how good he was.

I was a bluegrass banjoist and guitarist who wanted to play electric. My electric chops were awful until I discovered Gatton. His playing made a lot of sense to me and changed everything. Whoever uploaded those Gatton lessons where he breaks down his technique deserves a medal. I wish the “telemaster “ video would show up again. Amazing playing and storytelling!

Also a staple in country pickin' as well. I started using it on top 4 and middle 4 voicings in jazz combo to stay out of the bass players way and simulate a keyboard when there isn't one. I've been using hybrid for probably 30 years but this vid gives me 'o-plenty expanded to work on! Thanks Josh!

The interesting thing about hybrid picking is once you start doing or even attempting some lame version of it it starts to become addictive or just the way you play. Now when I play I always use my fingers in some form or fashion all the time I'm just not skilled enough yet to make it sound clean

Your playing toward the end of the video completely nails it. I’m inspired to try them all hybrid picked. It seems so obvious when I hear you do it - thanks. Gamechanging is right!

Love your videos and your playing Josh ! I'm an old school player and can remember dudes like Ray Flacke, (HWY 40 Blues) Ricky Skaggs etc. Just now starting to use more of this in playing.
To me, it adds two things. that feel that you get from playing without a pick and right hand ease of motion. Why wear your right hand out trying to alternate pick when your middle and third finger are right there? You're my favorite picker and your videos are the best on TH-cam
Thanks bro..Can't wait for the Danny one !

Loving all your videos Josh! I've been working really hard on hybrid picking the past month and a half or so and while I'm still in baby steps compared to what you've shown here, I feel like I'm on the cusp of serious breakthroughs in my playing too. It really does open up a whole new world of possibilities. The Hot Licks videos by Danny Gatton are mind blowing too.

  • @ShiningEyeBrigade

I loooove hybrid picking sounds and phrasing. Unfortunately I can only do an approximation by pocketing my pick and using all fingers. I developed a “bad” habit early on of holding the pick with my middle finger and thumb, rather than index and thumb. I found it gave me better control and tone because I could get more meat of finger under the pick. But it means I have less fingers available to do hybrid.
So now I need to spend some years relearning and it makes me sad every time I try because I LOVE the feel of picking with middle finger and thumb and it feels so... thin, with the index instead of middle. Maybe this video will be the thing that pushes me over the edge to bite the bullet and woodshed.
    But this one

    • @daganumos7002
      @daganumos7002 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I had a related issue and changed how I hold the pick. It used to ‘dangle’ out the side of my thumb and index finger and that lacked control. I changed to curling my index back and gripping the pick from between the first knuckle and the thumb. It was weird at first but I quickly adapted - much more swiftly than I expected. I think that previous techniques mould into the new version rather than being lost and starting again. Anyhow - my flat picking improved and now my hybrid is much stronger.

i did hybrid picking most often when i was fairly good at guitar but got lazy or something so its just fingers now. i still do a flat pick depending on what i`m playing to but dont often hybrid pick these days.
anyway, i noticed something about those mind-blowing hybrid pickers like Albert Lee or Johnny Hiland.
They use the pinky finger to pick where, i could never quite get it. not being able to coordinate my little finger on my right hand i sorta gave up on hybrid picking because of that. lol

The triplets idea across three strings is awesome, what’s the mechanic for 3 notes per string? Any other drills you can cover would be wonderful. Perhaps a lick with those exercises at its core so there’s a musical application from day one. Much respect and appreciation sent from this Brooklyn picker.🤘🎸
