  • This is a test of the 150 gr Iron Will WIDE Single Bevel, 4 blade broadhead.
    Here is summary of my 2023 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/the scores of this head posted in parenthesis as well.
    Wide SB 150 gr Total Score: 87.04 = 9 Golden Arrows
    1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 15 pts)
    This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 20 & the max score of a Fixed is 16.
    2. Cut Size (20%, 16.03 pts)
    The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
    The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.125" = 5.95 pts)
    The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.125" = 5.95 pts)
    The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.375" = 4.125 pts)
    3. Blades (20%, 19.2 pts)
    Initial sharpness (9%, 175 grams = 10/10 = 9 pts) & Edge Retention (9%, +0 grams = 10/10 = 9 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
    Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
    What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
    A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
    A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
    A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
    Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
    Out of the Box Sharpness:
    0-200 gr: 10
    201-300 gr 9
    301-400 gr: 8
    401-500 gr: 7
    501-600 gr: 6
    601-700 gr: 5
    Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (6/10=1.2 pts)
    4. Penetration (20%, 16.81 pts)
    There are 3 penetration tests:
    Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (8" = 8 pts)
    Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score.
    ( 53 layers=6.81 pts)
    Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (10/10 = 2 pts)
    5. Durability (20%, 19 pts)
    Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (10/10 = 12 pts)
    If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (8/10 = 4 pts)
    If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (10/10 = 3 pts).
    Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
    BONUS:
    +.5 thick blades (.062")
    +.5 single bevel rotation: 38 degrees at 10"
    TOTAL SCORE: 87.04 pts = 9 Golden Arrows
    Price: $41.65/head

    Thanks for another good review. I see the IW’s growing in popularity. Premium steel, A2 just rolls off the tongue and says quality.
    But I’ve recently went back and watched your review of the Slick Trick Magnum. It’s unbeatable to me, scored the same on sharpness, penetrated 20 more layers in the cardboard and handled the steel plate and concrete with grace. And you get 4 in a pack. Price and quality Is unmatched. I just went outside and shot a few. Right with field points also.

      I used the slick trick for years they worked but I will say the blood trails were always lacking even with perfect shots. Always found the deer within 100 yards but often just found the deer by walking in the direction they went with very little blood. Not sure why just my observation.

    Own the regular single bevel and love it can’t go wrong A-2 steel is a great choice looked at the S-7 heads but the price was very high and A-2 is right behind it and for around 1/3 the price if I can remember right it was something like $100 for the A-2 set and around $300 for the S7 when I bought my A-2 iron will broadheads a couple yrs ago and the S7 is overpriced by at least $100 in my opinion. I use the KME sharpening system with the the hand or system extras for sharpening broadheads it works great though it could take a very little practice on a cheap head before sharpening your hood heads but works fantastic and I can sharpen anything with the system not just broadheads but any knife,scissors and axes whether they’re serrated or recurved to a polished hair popping edge.

    I shot wides one season and found after a bear and two deer that I didn't get very good blood trails (do you need one when they die within 60yds 🤷‍♂️) I wonder if that single bevel would help w more blood letting. Love the brand you know you bought quality, thanks for the test john.

    • @reddawng43x91
      @reddawng43x91 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The single bevel doesn’t help blood spray! It helps to penetrate shoulder blades and thick bone by corkscrew cutting through like a drill bit!

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure it would make much difference. But if you didn't get good blood from the Wide, it's not because of the broadhead...you're cutting a lot of tissue with that head and a very clean cut. But there are SO MANY other factors that affect blood letting. Have you seen my video on: Broadheads and Bloodtrails? Check that out, cause it might help.

    Hey John, I have a seiriouse question about bevel direction. My bow naturally shoots left turn, so I fletch left helical. Actually, all 3 of my bows turn the arrow left. But almost all the broad heads.....right bevel. Do you have any thoughts on this?

    • @KountryfriedOutdoorProductions
      @KountryfriedOutdoorProductions ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know you asked John, but if you fletch left you will want a left bevel. I do believe in fletching your arrow to match the natural rotation of the bow, but most manufacturers develop products for a right rotation. There is a lot of debate on if matching fletching offset to your natural rotation really matters, but if it gives you more confidence then do it! Right bevel with a right helical or offset, left bevel with a left helical or offset.

    I know they are completely different broadheads but I am on the fence between iron will single bevel and the tooth of the arrow. I would get regular size and large size for both. I live in Canada and hunt deer, moose, bear, elk. I shoot a bowtech sr80 at 31” draw 84lbs. Arrows are victory rip ss. When all said and done arrow will weigh about 575 grain. Any suggestions for a do it all broad head. If not those 2 mentioned. I only shoot fixed

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Man, that’s a tough decision. I’ve hunted extensively with the large and small models of each in my quiver at times: IW Wide/Regular and TOTA 1” and XL. With your set up penetration is not an issue for any of them. For shots 50 yds and under, I’d only use the larger models of each. With the TOTA xL you’re getting .25” more cut. If you’re able to penetrate deeply with both, that’s a pretty significant amount and might win the day for me. But I also love those IW Wide-just super high quality. You can’t go wrong either way. TOTAs are significantly less expensive, especially with my Discount Code: LUSK19. Unfortunately IW won’t give me a discount code.
