A gamete is a reproductive cell of an animal or plant. In animals, female gametes are called ova or egg cells, and male gametes are called sperm. Ova and sperm are haploid cells, with each cell carrying only one copy of each chromosome. During fertilization, a sperm and ovum unite to form a new diploid organism.
Gametes are formed through meiosis (reduction division), in which a germ cell undergoes two fissions, resulting in the production of four gametes. During fertilization, male and female gametes fuse, producing a diploid (i.e., containing paired chromosomes) zygote.
A male gamete is called sperm (spermatozoa) and is a haploid cell formed through Spermatogenesis.
What is spermiogenesis? Spermiogenesis is the last phase in the formation of spermatozoa (the male sex cells that carry a man's genetic material). During this stage of maturation, the spermatid cells see an increase in the size of the tail and a decrease in the spermatozoa head.
Spermiogenesis is the process by which haploid round spermatids complete an extraordinary series of events to become streamlined spermatozoa capable of motility. Spermiogenesis begins after spermatocytes complete 2 quick successive meiotic reductive divisions to produce haploid round spermatids.
An egg cell or ovum is a female reproductive cell that fuses with sperm in the process of fertilisation. This ovum develops into its mature form via a process called oogenesis. In viviparous animals, this ovum is fertilised inside the body of the females. Whereas, the embryo development takes place in the uterus.
The ovaries are small, oval-shaped glands located on either side of your uterus. They produce and store your eggs (also called ovum) and make hormones that control your menstrual cycle and pregnancy. During ovulation, one of your ovaries releases an egg. If a sperm fertilizes this egg, you can become pregnant.
