    This is the perfect jazz drum sound in my opinion, snappy snare and airy cymbals

    IF you close your eyes, and listen to this video as a song, and not a video, I think the compositional genius of this song really shines. Just a beautiful piece of music.

    Those cymbals sound incredible. RP has so much presence in the music yet you can hear everyone clearly.

    Who disliked this???? People that were disappointed that it wasn't some djent-y metal guy bashing on the extremely dry, unlathed trash can lids that make up some of Meinl's videos? I'm not a jazz guy, but this is a great showcase on both classic jazz drumming AND other, more musical, lines of Meinl cymbals.
    *Edit* guess it's in the hands of the players. This guy makes those extra cymbals I was complaining about sound very musical...when other videos? Not so much. Kudos!

      And yes, as others have mentioned, that piano playing is top notch...heck, both of these other cats are awesome.

      1. djent isn't a thing
      2. not being a jazz guy doesn't make your opinion anymore important
      3. 'trash lid extra dry cymbals' lol
      4. cymbals are preference. Matt Gartska uses VERY thin cymbals and look at the band he plays in... who fucking cares. cymbals are cymbals. you can be like Matt Gartska and use extra dry cymbals in super-high intensity, progressive metal music (Look up Animals As Leaders), or be like Ralph here and use it for jazz. get real kid

    Im guessing its colored lights aimed at the cymbals, and not some special refracting brass or bronze, right?

    Lil tiny bass drum, where's his dad?

  • @agee23
    @agee23 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Am I the only one who hates the way jazz drums sound? I get the sound in the old days because they did what they could, but they're just being choked out to me. I don't get how that's a good sound. I'm not hating on the playing, or the drums, just jazz drum tuning.

    • @nested_King
      @nested_King 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You're not the only one. But it is the sound that has been a part of jazz since bebop. Larger drums and lower tunings are fine for more rhythm based playing like swing, rock, or r&b, but the higher tunings make articulation and interplay with the other instruments in modern jazz more possible and easier to hear.

    • @Riddim4
      @Riddim4 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It fits the music. Max cranked his drums so they'd project better and not clash with acoustic instruments in the lower registers. Others emulated his choices. Shorter, dryer sounds generally work better here than a wet tuning and toms that sustain for 4 bars.

    Man, what happened to jazz? ignoring the drummer, who is amazing, what is this tune? Where's the theme? Where's the singable melody? When does the tune stop and the soloing start? This fragmented nonsense is the reason everyone hates modern jazz!!

    • @tlucario14
      @tlucario14 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Matkat Music look up Hungry Ghost by Mark Guiliana, and and look up Concert in Japan by John Coltrane. check the dates. Tell me which one is modern jazz.

    • @vladeguignimusic
      @vladeguignimusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Here's your melody bro... th-cam.com/video/9_8cwXgWW6Q/w-d-xo.html Same Drummer....! Jazz is always moving forward my friend.. is not meant to be the same... the idea is to make it fresh every day.....!

    • @Riddim4
      @Riddim4 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Please do not confuse your inability to hear with someone else not saying something. Listen to the melody until you get it. It won't hurt to look at the chart either.

      You commented this two years ago. I hope in all that time you’ve grown enough to respect the musicality in experimentation.
      Or you can just be a close minded fool who’s gripping on to the past while others are innovating and reinvigorating jazz so that the music stays alive instead of being lost in time.

      Hey Matkat Music!
      Stick to posting recordings of your truly beautiful music rather than posting "fragmented nonsense" like this comment of yours.
