When to Walk AWAY... Knowing your Limits on a Mountain Bike.

  • This is part of the Black Rock series where I aim to ride 40 features to celebrate turning 40 (not there yet - later this year!) In this video, I had already been riding for 5 days in a row, including a day already at Black Rock.
The trails here are amazing, and are riddled with Freeride type features. I cross the finish line on my journey to hitting 40 features, but I also have to wrestle with the psychological battle of knowing when to walk away instead of dropping in.

I got back into mountain biking again at the age of 47 and still hit quite a few jumps, mostly the naturally occurring kind. Tail whips are so much fun. I totally agree that it's good to set limits and only attempt new features when I'm feeling it. Jumping is only a small part of the sport.

I like this sentiment. Watching YT videos would lead one to believe you're not really mountain biking if you don't do massive jumps and extreme technical terrain. Its like saying one isn't really an airplane pilot if they don't do aerobatics.

I like that goal. At 63 I have started jumping gaps and hitting drops. Having said that, I do walk away from some features. The best part is at my age I don’t care what people think, I am just happy to be riding bikes and living to ride again the next day.🎉 Nice video enjoyed the content.

@@dirtchurchmtb Another day indeed. I’m 41, started riding at 35, living in Morzine and had a big day today. Major mental gymnastics to deal with technique, confidence, fear and bike setup. Ticked off some big ones in the end tho!! A couple clicks of HSC to firm up the fork helped me a lot (and cornering speed thanks to smarter braking). Had to use ALL the tricks but it feels awesome.
