Initially referenced by Boethius in 523 AD to "O Sapientia," the 7 texts form the acrostic ERO CRAS ("I will be tomorrow") for each of the 1st letter of the "O" antiphons: O Emmanuel (God with Us), O Rex (King), O Oriens (Rising), O Clavis (Key), O Radix (Root of Jesse), O Adonai (Master Yahweh), O Sapientia (Wisdom). Each Antiphon is a cento of biblical quotes organized around a theme, sung each day from 17 to 23 December, anticipating the Nativity. Charlemagne attempted to standardize Chant and tapped Frankish bishop and liturgist, Amalarius (775-850 AD), who mentioned the Antiphons extensively. By 900, they appear in various Roman antiphonal codices. Director Eric Newell set choral anthems for each Antiphonal theme:
