lol the stern grumpy Anglican realizing he is talking to a "happy-clappy" Charismatic is gold.
“You might say that’s a strange thing for a Calvinist to say…well there you go I say strange things..because I believe that’s true..God does not make too hard a terms with those who seek Him.” Truth trumping doctrine. 👊🏼
If you are visiting Rome the Capuchin Crypt is a place that blew my mind even after I'd done the full Vatican tour. Peter Hitchins is definitely a character and that quote from Swift resonates with me as I'd been discussing with my wife today how it wouldn't be worth us trying to talk to our atheist brother in law about any of the ideas from Justin Brierley's recent podcast critiquing Dennet and Harris' view of determinism. Most atheists wouldn't have the first clue what a deterministic materialist philosophy means. They've just adopted their position from somewhere and not examined the arguments of the apologetics or atheist thinkers.
The “Get Your Guide” app is very good, we used it to book a combined trip to the Capuchin Crypt and the Catacombs of Saint Sebastian. NornIronMan’s recommendation is spot on 👌.
30:53 "You can't reason a man out of a position that he wasn't reasoned into in the first place."
You can't reason with a rationalist that rationalism is irrational.
Rationalism is rationalizing your emotions ... which are irrational. Logical fallacy all around.
Jonathan swift. Scott Adams says your opinions are assigned to you. And then you rationalize after wards
I'm in a strange spot when it comes to God. I wasn't looking for Him, I wasn't seeking Him but He kept jumping out saying "here I am". After maybe a dozen peek-a-boo's I gave up on denial. So the whole intellectual-God thing is, well, funny to me. The whole 'I act like God exists' , while perhaps useful for head centred folks, is funny.
I want to say more but I'll leave it there.
From now on she will forever be known as Elizabeth "Happy Clappy" Oldfield.
Paul, you should do it. You should go pastor the church in England!
Maybe it turns out that the strongest argument is "Follow Me!"
"Come and see".
Some folks are finding their "fear of God" and finding that He's not scary.
Witnessing your own infectious mirth at Hitchens/Oldfield enhanced my own Paul…despite their differences he is gracious in the presence of the feminine; not least because her own charm and intelligence oil the conversational wheels in a way that was never going to happen with Alex O’Conner…who I get the impression in interview is more about presenting his own intellectual credentials…the very clever kid who morphed into the highly intellectual adult but whose heart remains (as yet) untouched or stirred by the pre-existent God he apprehends purely academically; solely as an idea located organically within his brain…possibly why he was able to talk at such length with JBP so easily.
Watching through the whole thing, I just keep thinking the same thing. Our beliefs aren’t that obvious to ourselves, and the tacit framework which we see the world through isn’t entirely subject to our assent to propositions.
That being said, the best way to begin to believe something is to decide to believe it beyond when you feel like you do. Belief isn’t an emotion, it’s a state of being. Living as though you believe is a great step towards full belief.
How you you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
And, as a Christian I think the Holy Spirit plays a pivotal role in the process of belief. As the type of Christian I am, I even think the Holy Spirit shoulders much of the burden. Just take the leap and choose belief.
"A bunch of you scored 0 in agreeableness"
I scored like 60%. Above average.
I'm still stunned.
I think your ADHD is workin’ for me. I would never have watched the Dawkins-Hirsi Ali exchange in its entirety...but I needed to hear that clip.
"Sad clappy" 😂
me irl
Aside from being one of the five percent here, my JBP agreeableness score was 82. But I'm continuing to enjoy not fitting in!
"Christianity is utterly ridiculous, but it's an utter ridiculousness that I want to remain dominant in my corner of the world because it makes my life easy!"
Dawkins annoys me because he's like a freeloader on welfare that despises those with jobs but sees how trends are going and is now worried that too many are getting on the dole with him while too few will be working to keep the welfare system going. So now, he's speaking about about how we need more workers keeping the system going while also sneering at them and calling them stupid fools for having jobs and not living it easy like he does.
Have a great time in Italy Paul. I went back in November to see my cousin and his wife there. It was beautiful
Scott Adams says your opinions are assigned to you. And then you rationalize after wards
Maybe I have an odd view of God, but I don't understand why so many people say you can't prove God's existence. I got this proof from E. Michael Jones who, I believe, was paraphrasing St. Thomas Aquinas, but it's as simple as:
1. Something can't come from nothing
2. There is something.
QED. There has always been something, and whatever there has always been is God.
This doesn't prove the specific qualities of God as outlined in the bible, but surely it's good enough for a general understanding of an eternal creative force in reality.
It's consistent I suppose, but most people won't be satisfied with it because it defines god very broadly: God is just existence, but not personal and doesn't guarantee salvation or justice etc.
It doesn't really accomplish anything and is unsatisfying.
@@smoothinvestigator Well it accomplishes laying a foundation that can't be argued against. You have to have a strong foundation to build off of no matter what it is you're trying to accomplish.
@@smoothinvestigator And I'm not sure what you mean by personal, but if you mean something like "conscious entity", I would attempt to prove that by first suggesting that reality is foundationally consciousness as an alternative to the idea that reality is foundationally material (not provable through logic alone, but I could provide a series of examples that would suggest this is the case), and then argue that since consciousness is foundational, it would only make sense that God could be seen as a conscious entity.
@@rossmcguinn2256 How about that consciousness and materiality are both foundational?
If you start with the premise that the universe was created by an all-powerful God, there is nothing irrational about believing that He can alter it to suit his needs.
Paul we don't mind if you make videos while in Italy but Rome is so old everywhere that you want to sponge up as much as possible. "Over there is a 2000 year old ruin and over here is a 1000 year old church."
I purposely got lost in the Louvre because I'll likely never visit it again.

18:44 happy clappy stuff turned me off from Christianity. But once I learned how they were mischaracterizing the gospel, my mind was opened to listening again.
Mischaracterizing the gospel?
@@Phlebas9202 that Jesus loves me and wants me to be happy
I was happy-clappying a while ago, but Jordan, Jonathan, John and Paul over here were introduced to me.
"The people who are annoyed by it have left the channel"
Oh, no they haven't.
Just think of it by reflecting upon your own family members and when you have those "Here they go again..." moments with their behavior that annoy you.
It's a matter beyond annoying. You love them and have grown used to that annoying bit, even find it endearing at times.
I've been thinking a lot about the justice thing. Heaven is the place where the murderer and the victim will meet and be happy to see each other.
Hello Mr Vanderkley, I don't think it as simple as you give into your immediate desires, asperartions and ego
I think one could also be overwhelmed and give into certain emotions but stall or avoid other emotions and things
Talking from my own personal experience, I avoid most things that could be considered Good for a person, and I stall and avoid certain things to avoid any sort of pain or consequences for those choices i make that could happen in the distant future.
The thing is these choices are more complex than just give in or just avoiding it a combination, and I think other people who are also atheistic or agnostic do the same in their own way hell even theists may do the same to an extent.
Thanks Paul. Wait until you see the long section in part 2 on Taylor and Christianity, which is quite complex.
Please please please come to England Paul!
17:51 "knowing more about the Greek and Norse myths than they do about the Bible" Might apply to some in TLC. .
Definitely! Along with C.S. Lewis, George McDonald and G.K. Chesterton.
@@tgrogan6049 There are those who promote mythos (which Scripture has a negative view of as fables/fiction) rather than Logos. TLC abounds in fairy tales.
@@anselman3156 But they don't care because they are not by any historic definition Christian. That is what is so hilarious about TLC. Started by a Reformed Pastor and does not care about and/or doesn't even know what Christianity is. After 20 centuries??? It is a disgrace really.
My dad had three red Readers Digest Encyclopaedia when I was growing up in the 80s.
There was a section on the Greeks myths I read it so many times, the characters were all listed alphabetically, they can really capture the imagination.
@@markweswhit869 I too first encountered the Greek, Roman and Norse myths as a boy in encyclopedias my parents had provided for us. They were like fairy stories, and never came any where near being considered by us as on a level with the Bible. What is lamentable is the tendency of some in TLC to exalt myths/fables and fairy stories, and to take a low view of the authority of Holy Scripture.
I love Stryper! In God we trust, Yahweh, Rise to the Call and Let Him In.
A knockoff no, an exception yes.
Ecclesiastes 1:9 What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.
I watched the Hitchens interview and was shocked how iritating he can be. She did a good job, eventually, of trying to bring him out but man that guy is subborn in not going along with a, pardon the pun, good faith conversation.
Does each individual duck have to taste the bread to decide if he likes it?

No, it's just part of their programming....
1:56 “attraction rather than promotion”
But have discernment about in what way we should attract. Fr. Heers touches on this point:

@@Phlebas9202 was sad PVK didn't make the tie in
Opinions corrected = orthodoxy. I lean into practice corrected = orthopraxis. Who do you trust? Not the British PM. Father Calvin Robinson is trustworthy.
Peter Hitchens isn't just so disagreeable. He is also so pessimistic, too!
You appear to be joining a lot of very relevant dots at the moment Paul…. struggling to determine what picture is appearing, but I thinks it’s good 🙏
Jesus way is paradox, upside down, and leads us to order our loves.
Aren't they ours (opinions) when we adopt them?
We just THINK we are adopting them....when in reality it's just rather sophisticated brain washing.
Peter Hitchens interviewed on; Socrates in the City: Discussing his book referenced here…Great interview although the Metaxas shtick at the start can be a little wearing. th-cam.com/video/FEJ_dtN0QO8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=_x4hwoEKP-PHTZR2
As I've always said: Peter > Chris.
I was yesterdays old when I realised they were brothers😅
Ngl anyone who speaks in tongues or talks about the lord speaking to them weirds me out too.
Its just too easy for people with issues to justify themselves that I instantly dont trust anyone who brings it up.
Im faithful, but its a much more read the signs in the world than God is talking in my head
37:45 wow, what a line.
To justify their sin.
I’m speaking as someone who knows this.
40:28 "There are more things in life then your immediate pleasure, satisfation, and ambition"
I feel, Paul, that if you truly understood this, you would not engage in the activities you are currently pursuing within this virtual realm.
In what way?
@@matthewbutler71 He must be having too much fun. Can't have that.
I guess raising 5 children and pastoring a church wasn't delayed gratification enough 😂
50:42 Clip it!
revelation is binary, you either get it or you dont
Around 30:00 PVK blames Taylor Swift for UBL 😂
I could see a purpose for you diving into Zak Stein’s new book and perhaps drawing Biblical similarities. Please!
Great video.
Ben's great.

Late night for you Paul.
My ADHD brother!
British intellect is French intellect translated out of a proper language ;-) Moderns assume modernity, usually unconsciously, then concluding that modernity makes sense. Talking yourself into something or faking it until you make it, won't work. It is a calling. G-d doesn't call everyone.
He doesn't need to always, some of us just stumble in naturally.
Paul, what do your subscriber metrics look like? More and more people see you all the time, and yet you're stuck just below the magic 10^4.5 number.
"look like?" Hard to tell. Google only shows me numbers. I want to get back to some more randos convos so I can hear more fresh voices and get a sense of who's listening and what they're thinking about.
