I think someone who tries to remain close to his/her family if they're that kind of family is a hell of a lot more unhealthy than being realistic and understanding there's no point in pursuing anything any further with them. And what about people whose family literally abandoned them as children and they don't even know who the fuck their parents are? It might not necessarily be your job to fix them, but we all have our problems and issues. Nobody's perfect, and if you want people to put up with your stupid shit you gotta take some of theirs too. Err on the side of caution, but don't write off someone because of their parents.
