- Documenting the build of my monome Norns Shield.
I've wanted to get into the Monome environment for years, but could never justify the fairly exorbitant pricing. The Shield is finally a great entry point into the ecosystem. So I'm super excited to build it and start experimenting with the apps and hopefully create some decent music with it!
Monome shield is a DIY version of the Norns - which is a sort of mini music computer, designed to store different musical apps that interact and affect sound differently. It's a beautiful mishmash of different sound tools, and I've loved playing with it for the first few weeks I've had it.

Very cool track and thanks for showing the ease in building it!
Glad you like it!
Thanks for posting this! Very excited to get my hands on one now
Nice! Keep an eye on this channel I’ll be going through some of the apps soon!
Beautiful!
Thanks!
Beautiful!! Thanks so much for sharing, os that background music is music the Norns only?
Yes, it is! It's the Compass app - which breaks up your audio and treats it in different ways (reverse, octave up/down, speed etc)
Neat ! Does it only work via Computer or can you hook it up to other USB devices for example Bastl Instruments? It creates quite unique sounds in your video. Does it require the Apps you mentioned to make sounds? My computer broke so haven't got another yet...💡🐙🤙🌌
Hey thanks! The design of all mobile stuff is to enable music creation without a computer. But... you’ll need a computer to flash the SD card so if you could borrow someone’s for like 30 mins. In terms of connections I know the USB is for midi. I’m not sure if you can connect it to other instruments like the Bastl with USB. You can definitely connect other instruments via audio cable - so the Bastl can run into the shield via audio. The apps I mentioned are the tools to create sound and they are all included in the shield. There’s a community of creators that are constantly adding new apps to the library.
@@AndyDollerson Thanks for the info! I've got to look into this little Sound Machine a bit more now. Ciao~💡🌌💥🎵🙊
@@EleniEliades_ I'll hopefully have more videos coming up about the shield over the next few days/weeks, so keep an eye on my channel!
for power is that a standard USB charger? thanks for the video
Hey you’re welcome. Actually when you buy the raspberry pi a power supply comes with it. I don’t know offhand if it’s a standard 2.4A supply like usb, but I’m assuming not.
How was the import tax and duty to the UK? Thinking of ordering from Monome soon, but would be good to get an idea of the total cost.
Sorry I can’t quite remember. I think it was around 40quid with fees? Maybe less than that? There are customs calculators online that will give you exact amount. You can buy all the peripherals like raspberry pi etc from U.K. or wherever you’re based.
@@AndyDollerson Thanks, good to know. Now to just wait until they restock next year!
@@rowanbishop im in the same boat :)
@@rowanbishop saw one go for 350 on ebay. Good thing i am patient
great, is this somewhere available?
Thanks yeah - here: monome.org/docs/norns/shield/
@@AndyDollerson Thanks! But sold out there...
@@lab-by-the-sea As far as I know that's the only place you can get it, unless you look for it pre-built on Reverb. They seem to come up with new stock fairly often so just keep trying!
hi there. i just got a pre built shields and as soon as i turn it on i can hear crackling non stop. not a constant hum or buzz but crackling and popping digital sound. if i turn down the overall volume or the engine volume it stops but if i turn those up again the crackle is there again but it doesnt show in the vumeter. any help? thx!
Are you using dedicated power supply or computer usb power? Docs say it could be that
Beat me to it!
