I can't figure out what movie one of the scenes was from. One that you used for Authoritarian parenting. Around 1:56-2:10, the one where the dad had just hit the kid, and says, "this is for your own good boy. you have no respect for other people's things. You can't just go around doing whatever you feel like..."
      What movie is that from??

I’m definitely authoritative and so were my parents. My parents were always asking for our opinion and advice and they always explained things to us when we had questions. We weren’t allowed to do whatever we wanted but we also didn’t get punished for no reason. But I totally believe that even when you are an authoritative parent you might still use the phrase “because I said so” every now and then lol. I love having conversations with my kids but I’m also going to discipline where ever it’s needed. Discipline doesn’t have to mean punishing your child. But if you don’t have boundaries it can get overwhelming for the child because you are putting them in charge instead of taking the responsibility of parenting.

My mom was authoritative 100%. My dad was authoritarian, slightly authoritative (10%), permissive (5%), but uninvolved 95%. He was in & out of the picture, tried to impose rules when he was around, kind of bipolar.. just never knew where we stood with him. Was frustrating because we were really used to listening to our mom mostly..

Mother of 3 boys here (12, 5, 3). I'm an Authoritative parent and as you said, it is difficult to implement. I find myself slipping into a more authoritarian mindset after long difficult, high strung weeks when I have been going over the same issue with them over and over for days and they aren't cooperating. I believe that we need to make space for and build up the individual, while guiding the path and teaching them about action and consequence, and I've found that the biggest factor for success is practicing what I preach. If I am setting an expectation for my oldest that I don't even put that amount of effort into myself.. I can see when I'm being a hypocrite, and if I can see it, you know damn well they will too. If not now, then eventually. I'm big on asking questions that promote self awareness, mindfulness and critical thinking.

My mom was an Authoritarian parent... Very demanding and controlling.. she did A lot of yelling and screaming and flying off the handle. She punished us mostly physically but also withdraw from us by shutting herself in her room. She would not talk to us and directly ignore us if we tried talking to her. Sometimes she'd withhold basic necessities like food and toiletries as a form of punishment or to get her point across. We had to do exactly what she said and wanted because she said so and because she's the adult ..... Didn't know there was a name for that parenting style. You learn something new everyday 😉

*Thanks a lot for sharing these precious Tips! I did'nt even realized that most of authoritative parents do'nt even explain the reason why they are mad about their child. So, at the end of the day, the child will not learn from his mistake, but instead, will just listen to the parent by fear or respect.*

To your point, authoritarian parents don't realize that at some point, once their kids get old enough to make their own decisions, there is a real risk of rebellion and undoing everything they taught their kid. I've seen this personally happen a few times. Big mistake. Thanks for watching. Next video "9 Tips For Setting High Expectations With Your Kid" comes out tomorrow. Subscribe to get the weeky video.

that is what we call "conditional love" in our house. it makes me sad to hear parents withdraw love as a punishment.

had to do a psychology assignment about my own experiences with reinforcement and punishments, we had to do 3 examples of both positive and negative reinforcement and only one example of positive and negative punishment. I had no idea what to put for reinforcements bc I was only ever punished for anything, I now realize my parents were definitely authoritatians

My dad wasn't in the picture but my mum was authoritarian and the uninvolved one depended on her mood. She has bipolar so it wasn't just her parenting styles that were at the extreme. She even once yelled at me and blamed me for getting hit by a drunk driver.

Not a parent myself, just interested in parenting styles. I feel like my mother was kind of authoritarian, but not 100% My father has more of a permissive style, but, even though it worked for me, my sister isn't like that and she literally does what she wants. I don't support permissive parenting, it's really frustrating...

  • @ameliamena4670

A mix of authoritarian and neglectful. Basic needs met, but extreme expectation of adherence to "rules" and blind obedience. We cooked and cleaned for the house and led our own education but were somehow always getting punished as well... Totally not allowed our own opinions. I really hope i can do better when my little one comes..
