- Papua New Guinea bids a heartfelt farewell to one of its greatest statesmen, the Late Sir Julius Chan, GCL GCMG KBE PC MP.
On Friday afternoon, January 31, 2025, Prime Minister Hon. James Marape, Speaker Hon. Job Pomat, State Ministers, and Members of Parliament stood in solemn unity at the APEC VIP Terminal in Port Moresby. With heavy hearts, they received Sir Julius' casket on behalf of the State from the New Ireland Provincial Government and his grieving family-marking the final transition of a leader who dedicated his life to the nation.
In a moment rich with cultural reverence, two New Ireland Maimai performed a sacred ritual, their voices and movements echoing -a powerful tribute to a man whose leadership shaped Papua New Guinea’s history. This was more than a handover; it was an emotional welcome, a moment of deep national mourning and respect.
Watch this video to share in the emotions of this solemn occasion. As the nation pauses to reflect, we remember Sir Julius Chan not just as a political figure, but as a father, a leader, and a guardian of Papua New Guinea’s past, present, and future.
🕊️ Rest in eternal peace, Sir Julius.
