True story: Years ago, my dad was a chief engineer (maintenance manager) at a large building in Chicago. In every women’s washroom, there was a ‘sanitary product’ vending machine. Each night, the janitors would empty the money from the machines and refill them with products. They kept the money, in a bucket, in a janitor closet. When the janitors started noticing money missing, they notified my dad. The only other person, with keys to that closet, was a mechanic who worked the night shift. My dad went to a store in Chicago, called “The Spy Shop”. He bought some powdered fluorescent dye, sprinkled it on the coins in the bucket and told the janitors not to touch the coins. A few days later, the janitors reported that money was missing again. My dad called all of his mechanics in, had them hold their hands out and shined a handheld UV light over them. The night mechanic’s hands glowed like a full moon and he was immediately fired. He already suspected the guy, but now had undeniable proof. I don’t know if he got the idea from Dragnet, but I thought that it was pretty clever.
I like that! It’s something I would do, and actually do, rig something to ID the culprit in some way they won’t notice when they’ve set off the trap. He may have got it from Sherlock, or other such stories, Sherlock would do that as well. Good on your dad for nabbing the jerk. I’ll bet it was so amusing for your dad to see the man’s face, priceless:) The other guys probably got a little joy from it, too.
He may find a small recorder or mini cam useful for security situations as well, especially when someone claims they weren’t somewhere or didn’t say what they said, especially when you want to catch what they say. They’ve come quite in handy for me, liars caught by their own words and actions. Keep it running 24/7, and those crazy surprises and blatant lies all get caught on record. Oh, so useful!
The fluorescent dye is way more fun in that scenario, though:)

I like how they broke into the guy's apartment with no warrant. The courts in the 50s must have been lax on 4th amendment protections, these guys commit illegal search and/or seizure every other episode, lol. Usually they have a hotel manager or landlord let them in, exceot that such people cannot legally give consent to a search or even entry.
