usually kamen rider is something like "don't judge a book by it's cover" like the ones which look bright and vibrant ends up being one of the darkest series.. and gavv is one of it now..

Gavv theme is actually very dark , a monster eating humans for a dark Snack , which can be interpreted as dr#gs since they seem to be addicted to it.
Its just overshadowed by the lighter enviroment and gimmicks
Yup learned my lesson with exaid, I pretty much said "wow Kamen rider has gone downhill" when it came out and I ate my words cuz it has become my favorite series in the franchise. I will never judge ever again 😂 and same with gavv rn I was like ??? At the design but I gave it a chance and so far ep2 and it's pretty good

The original concept of the Kamen Rider was that the Hero himself is actually a monster (biological weapon created by the villain), which made the series much more dark and serious compared to the Sentai series. The concept stayed with the Kamen Rider series until the early 2000's. However, the series had made its turn and became kids friendly show these days (for instance, no civilian casualities were made in the recent series). GAVV seems to brought back the original concept, although it looks poppy and cute on the surface, it depicts lonliness of the Rider, who will only be exiled from human society despite of being the savior.
You guys were wondering if this is normal for Kamen Rider and i'm speaking as a huge KR fan: they haven't been normal for more than 2 decades (mostly for the better, sometimes for the worst). When KR came back from a long hiatus, they decided to reinvent themselves for the new generations... and they haven't stopped since.
Also "Kamen Riders are for the moms" is a truer statement than you'd think.

Just so that Monty and Niki know, the potato rider is the same rider, he just has multiple forms. There is going to be a secondary rider later on in the show.
Aesthetically one of the massive differences between Rider and Sentai is the form changes. Nicki is 100% right that he’ll get different suits for different kinds of snacks!
18:24 Yeah compared to Sentai, Kamen Rider usually has more plot driven and complex stories. Most of it usually dark. But there are also some seasons that had more simple story and lighearted tone too.

@@Jay_D_Ashe Yes I am aware. The seasons you mentioned are on my fav list, but mostly Sentai lean more lighthearted or maybe balanced tone. Kamen Rider are most famous for darker story than sentai.

It's just started, but I feel like this season will be a lot of fun.
Honestly, Gavv is a good spot to jump in if you've been enjoying Sentai. The writer for this show is a Sentai veteran with a lot of her seasons being well received. With some experience writing some parts of Kamen Rider.
Lupat is kinda her best work.

@@keatonmcdaniel4962 I see. I just found Lupat the most enjoyable one compared to her other sentai works (even though the second half flawed). Zyuohger was okay though it kinda has wasted plot points and Zenkaiger, kinda on my worst sentai list for me.

Kamen Rider’s biggest strength that has allowed it to endure for over half a century is that each story is a different tone, some are darker and some mix light and dark and others are more fun and lighthearted. While a good chunk of the main heroes were themed on bugs like grasshoppers, the series loves to experiment with designs and concepts for each season. For example, last year up until a week ago, we had a steam train grasshopper alchemist and the year before we had a tricky sharpshooter Fortnite Fox who became a god.

Gavv is a cool way of reusing the whole cyborg thing that showa riders had.
I'm more of a Sentai guy, but I know that Ichigo was a pretty skilled dude that was captured by Shocker and turned into a cyborg with grasshopper powers, and all the monsters of the week are the same but with other animals.
Gavv is half granute half human, making him technically a cyborg. And apparently the monsters of the week are full granutes.
That's what a Kamen Rider is, someone born from evil, with evil powers, that talks about justice

The Gochizos are like blood cells. They are born, they serve their purpose and then they die. The moment blood cells deviate from their purpose in order to survive, they become cancer cells. And the dark snacks will have the same theme here I believe.
This reaction actually made me finally decide to check out Kamen Rider for the first time. I've always heard of it, seen clips and gifs from it, but since this is a new series I decided to just go in on it as well. So thanks guys!
You guys are pretty correct in most of your thoughts. Each season is varied for Rider as it is in Sentai. This is a lighthearted tone show with a grim undertone at least so far. We just got off a season where it was a lot lighter in both and the season before that was dimmer in tone.

Another trend apparently no one else has picked up on: beginning with Gaim, each Rider series has derived notable elements of its conception from that year's Sentai series.
Kamen Rider is not like other stories. You can't tell from the outside what it looks like. The story is darker.
Idk why eng translation sometimes translated it a bit different than what they really mean,before gavv finish the enemy,he give them choices either stop eating dark candy or get defeated by him,yet the translation said 'get beaten to the ground',i admit im not a Japanese speaker but i quite confident with my basic anime knowledge
Been loving your guys reaction to BoonBoomger and excited to see you react to Gavv as well! I think Gavv will be the first Kamen rider show I'll be watching weekly while it's airing. Zi-O was the first Kamen rider show I attempted to watch by Sougo wasn't doing it for me, then I tried Zero One but covid hit so the show took a mini hiatus and I lost interest after that. Gavv first ep really impressed me esp with how colorful everything is (like you guys mentioned) the fight scenes were amazing, and I really like Shoma as a character so far. I think he's the first main rider I've seen to have ptsd right off the bat and I think that sets up his character very well. His little "minions" are called gochizo and I think they're cutest little gimmicks I've ever seen! I'm excited to start the same Kamen rider journey with you guys! Can't wait for ep 2!! Tokusatsu (that includes super sentai, ultraman, metal heroes, kamen riders, kaiju movies etc.) are divided in 3 eras: showa (1926 to 1989), heisei era (1989 to 2019) and the reiwa era (2019 to today).
The original kamen rider debuted on the showa era and they normally have one base form (with some cases like strong that have one extra form) and BlackRx (3 forms aside from the base form)
Up to the start the heisei era the riders could had one to 3 variant forms, on the second half of the heisei era the riders start to develop even more forms.
And up to the reiwa era they have at least 10 diferent forms.
The rider forms today can be divided in:
-base form (kamen rider initial form)
-combined alternative form (when they use the gimmick of season to recieve other kind of arms, depending on the rider they can have 5 to 10 alternative modes)
-upgrade form (first major upgrade from the basic form)
-berseker/incomplete super form (an kind of upgrade form that could hurt the rider and his allies)
-super form (second major upgrade on the basic form)
-final form: the most powerful version that rider can get, some even with god like powers

Going from Power Rangers & Super Sentai to Kamen Rider was such a huge difference for me. My first Kamen Rider season, after getting caught up with Power Rangers, was Kamen Rider Build, and Build blew me away on its storytelling and characters in comparison to what I seen in Power Rangers and even Super Sentai. Still my favorite Kamen Rider season so far among those I watched so far.

It’s a power up
KR may be silly, but the story the shows tell can get darker than any SS/PR. More than one KR show starts with lighthearted tone and get grimmer and serious the further it goes.
It also depends on what story they want to tell and the Theme too. Some shows are mostly lighthearted with some serious moments throughout, while others are more serious from the get go.
Gavv, I bet is going the Gaim and Build route. Silly and slice of life comedy focus at the beggining to then hit with some serious sh*t. Specially for its concept being "Aliens that devour Human happines" and our MC being half those monsters.
Here in Gavv, Granutes may not be human, but it still kinda reminded me to OOO and its concept of "Human Greed" the bad guys would use People's desire and twist them for the worst to get, in OOO's case, Medals. Here is the Gummies taken from Human Happines.

With regards to the video's title question: I feel like Zero-One would be a better starting point series for Kamen Rider (and it's available legally in the U.S.!). But Gavv is showing promise.
You guys also gotta have to check out Shin Kamen Rider (2023)
Highly reccomend to those new to Kamen Rider. A modern retelling of the original Kamen Rider in a feature length film.
