Julekalender tv shows are a very Scandinavian genre of tv shows that started in Sweden in 1960. The rest of us followed soon enough. Most of the shows are aimed at children or the entire family - The Julekalender (which is originally Danish - you've been reacting to the Norwegian remake) is one of the far rarer versions aimed at adults. These days, in Denmark, the two big tv channels basically take turns every other year with a newly produced julekalender - this year DR offered Tidsrejsen 2, a time travel sf story - and a re-run - TV2 offered the first in their very succesful Tinka fantasy series.

Christmas TV Calendars are 24 episodes shows, running from 1 to 24 December (Where we celebrate Christmas). Denmark have made these since 1962, and there is about a 100 or so danish shows made to this day more or less, and we make a new one each year or second year. They are mostly for the kids, though there have been made some for adults, like The Julekalender. Pyrus might be one of our most beloved Christmas show, at least for the one who grew up with it.
Christmas TV Calendars is a Scandinavian concept, with the Swedes first making it a radio style, then moving that to TV, and the rest of Scandinavia followed suit.
The Julekalender, is Danish made and the one behind it got deals with Norway and Finland to make their own version of the show, using all or some of the same sets the Danes had used for filming.

Danish perspective: These tv-shows are for kids. They used to make a new one every year. Now there is more reruns.
And like one for the smaller kids at 6 pm at one tv channel, older kids at 8 pm on another channel and 9/10 pm for adults. The ones for adults are a younger tradition, it would often be some group of comedians with weird humour or "below the belt" humour. "The julekalender" being one of these.

If you watch the whole Alletiders Julemand, then you'll get the story how Saint Nikolas became Julemanden! ^^
