    Hello Mike,
    Being a fan of old bikes and you I feel at home in your shop so Thank You for taking us along. If I have to roll my 47 Indian off the bench to work on a "modern" bike I cringe.
    As age has caught up to me I went to clear pitchers with gradient markings! I transfer all fluids to these pitchers before adding to my older bikes as well. Just an idea that has helped me keep a bit neater and definitely sure of the amounts of fluids I do add.
    You are in my prayers
    Hoka Hey

      Thank You. I think I'll make that "adjustment" to my habits. And, thanx for coming along. I do appreciate you. I miss my Indian. I had a 52 Chief. 80 inch, and it didn't have the Bonneville cams when I got it, but I found and installed them. Hollow muffler and big trans sprocket. It was a high speed traveler.

    How funny, Yesterday I changed the oil, primary, trans, and filter on my buddies Heritage. That Dyna looked easier than his Heritage. Finding the trans plug between the shocks underneath was tight. A few years ago I had another buddy show me how he uses tin foil molded around the bottom of the old oil filter making it like a trough to catch the old oil running out. I have been doing it that way for a few years now, I like it!... That was a fun video....Thanks Mike.

    I have a Softail, but much the same procedures. I do let the oil just run everywhere and clean up after. One difference is that I use a Scavenger puck to remove all the old oil from the engine, and I have used High Performance Mineral Diesel oil from the first service. After 226,000 kms (over 140,000 miles) my 2006 FXSTBi Night Train is still going strong and the motor has never been apart. Love your videos, similar to a guy I follow that builds electric guitars, you have a style. I'd probably watch a video of you painting a barn haha!

    Mike when I do the fluid change I use a plastic measuring cup with al of the measurements. I got it years ago from the Tire Shop where I get tires. Oh a 2 liter soda bottle with bottom cut off is good to use when removing the oil filter, the extension fits nicely in the top..

    good stuff on the oil filter. When I got my new to me twin cam, it had the evidence of sloppy filter changes. the front and underside is covered in oily road spackle. Its a bit cold for a serious degreasing, this spring it will get a thorough cleaning. And the oil filter required some serious grunting to get it off, and then the seal tore completely loose when it did come loose. Gents and ladies - hand tight plys maaaaybe a smidge if you are worried + 1/8 - 1/4 turn - no more. its not going anywhere.
    Ive also never filled the filter on any bike. if you think it through, its just a ritual to make yourself feel better. the oil in the filter isnt going anywhere until there is pressure enough to move it. the only thing you save is a second or two as the filter comes to capacity. On a change, there should be plenty of oil in the bearings, etc to handle the few moments it takes to fill the galleys. That said, it doesnt do any harm to fill the filter, so have at it!
    heh - oil or grease or dry seal on the filter. The one thing that is certain, never dry. This is a great example of considering the purpose of the action. Which is to ensure the seal is intact, flush and not creased or torn. Whether you use grease, motor oil, or vegetable oil - it doesnt matter as long as the seal is lubricated for its fit. Ive never seen a hand-tight filter come loose and leak. But I hyave seen a torn or creased seal leak.
    Thanks Mike for the calm instruction! even if Im familiar with the process its always good to observe how someone else goes about things.

    I had a friend that was my good riding buddy and since he was older and wrenching bikes longer than me, I used to defer to a lot of his experience. I used to ask him how tight something should be. And for some things like an oil filter, he would say: "we're gonna use German torque on it". He was German after all, so he had me confused.
    What's German torque? I bit... He'd say, like I was ignorant, "gudentite"! with a German accent. "We're just gonna make it good and tight"!
    "Butch" was quite a character. Funny as you can get. Always had an anecdote of some kind. He was a tank and heavy track and wheeled equipment mechanic in Vietnam. He succumbed to Agent Orange complications a few years ago.
    RIP, brother Butch... See ya on the other side.

    I hate to correct you here Mike but on the Twin Cam engines the oil filter is on the feed side not the return.
    The feed side of the pump sucks the oil outta the oilpan under the trans and through a passageway in the crankcase to the cam support plate and then to the feed side of the pump, which then sends it through another channel to the crankcase and then the oil filter. Then it comes back through the crankcase into the cam support plate for distribution to the rest of the engine.
    The scavenge side of the pump pulls oil from both the cam and flywheel compartments and pumps it through channels in the cam support plate, back into the crankcase and then into the oilpan.
    That's how my workshop manual describes it.
    You may like to enter Harley oil Scavenger into your computer's search engine.... a company called Rogue Chopper LLC ( www.roguechopper.com) has a system you can buy that enables a total oil change - even the oil in the bottom end of the engine - which can amount to over a pint of used oil. It's quite simple and stops the (old) oil that collects there when the engine stops from contaminating the new oil when you next start the engine.

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Mike, always a great video..... Quick question : I just watched a video on Harleys having speed wobble problems with the "rubber" mounted engines. Have you ever run into this? I've personally owned dozens of Harley's, metrics, and British bikes. I can remember first hearing about it way back in the '60s, but I've never had it happen to me. My' 07 Dyna Lowrider is my first bike with the rubber mounted engine. I got this late November, so I've only ridden it around town a few times. Best, Queasyrider

      Speed wobbles can happen from so many reasons. Rubber mount Harleys are wonderful. However, if you look in your service manual, Harley explains chassis alignment. It's really good.

    The bike is supposed to be on the side stand for an oil change. Makes it a lot easier when replacing the filter.

      And, working on the floor is easier?

    • @joewood7225
      @joewood7225 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pacificmike9501 You can still use the side stand while on the lift. Makes it easy to re-fit the filter which SHOULD have some oil in it, if in doubt read the Dyna service manual.

    Transmission oil should be checked while on the jiffy stand, I find one quart exactly fills it, engine oil should be checked on the jiffy too when bike is hot, just sayin.

      Then check the level. Then finish it. You can't just go on the capacity in the book. The amount varies with how much stayed in the case, on the gears, etc. Thank You.

    Those oil filters are real PITA! Shouldn't Harley have engineered it bit better?

    • @t.s.racing

      Donnie, no oil tank on the Dyna. Under the transmission is a engine oil sump. The drain plug that's horizontal is for engine oil to drain while bike is on the Jiffy stand, and the other plug is vertical for draining the transmission fluid while bike is upright. Hope that helps.
