@Tripleblade 82 tickets weren't 50 to 150 dollars each in the 80's. My father used to take us (4 kids) to Fulton county stadium to watch the braves, and we'd get the dollar seats, in the upper deck. Now, even those seats are over 20 each.
Michael White it was $2 for a general admission ticket in the outfield for Jays games in the end of the 70s. It went up to $4 sometime after that but I don't remember when. It was general admission so if you went to get a drink or use the washroom and nobody was watching your seat, it was usually gone by the time ya got back. Lol! Exhibition Stadium (Blue Jays home from 77-89) was brutal! The seats along the first baseline were aluminum benches with numbers on them to tell ya where your seat was. The $2 general admission outfield seats were MUCH better! Now we have SkyDome, aka: Rogers Centre with its retractable roof and AstroTurf and it's the 6th oldest stadium in MLB and there's talk about getting a new stadium. I hope it's a strictly baseball stadium cuz SkyDome is multipurpose and is one of two stadiums still using Turf instead of real grass. Tropicana Field is the only other one still using Turf. I miss the $2 general admission outfield seats. Lol!

As a kid living in Minneapolis, the 80s were about The Twins and Puckett. But the others, Brett, Boggs, Mattingly, Gwynn, Clemons, Golden, Strawberry...so many more. We use to READ THE PAPER before school and check out every box score. What a fun time. So blessed.

Same here, but I grew up minutes from Yankee Stadium. But we definitely read the papers and check the box scores. Baseball cards meant more to me then something to be shoved in a bulletproof case and kept in a climate controlled atmosphere. They were just another tool. A memento to remind you of where they came from, and where they are going, and everything they have done for your team. Or haven't done for your team depending on the crappiness of the player.

Late 1970s & 1980s MLB was ( still is) the best ever.. so many multi-talented players , pitchers, hitters, base stealers, glove men, and guys who could truly do it all do it all..player salaries were going up, but unlike today, only the very best made the big $$ ( mostly)

In the 1981 Pawtucket, Rochester game, Wade Boggs was 4-for-12, with 1 RBI, and Cal Ripken was 2-for-13, for Rochester. Bob Ojeda pitched one inning and got the win. In 1986 Ojeda pitched against Boggs and the Red Sox in the World Series.

@One hand Clapping...The problem is youth coaches. Kids are taught to do one thing and one thing only. Pitchers are taught to throw as hard as they can...not how to pitch. Hitters are taught how to swing as hard as they can...not how to hit. Joc Peterson got to the major leagues and had never attempted a bunt...even in batting practice as a kid. John Lester couldn't throw the ball to any base...he only knew how to throw as hard as he could to a catcher 60' 6" away. The modern player doesn't know how to hit behind the runner, bunt, slide, hit the cutoff man, BE the cutoff man or any of the finer points of the game. In short, they don't know how to play.

Now I might be saying this because I grew up on 80's baseball and enjoyed it the most in that decade. Maybe it was because I was between the ages of 7-17. But I love the stolen base. Its my favorite play in baseball. I remember it well when a hitter with 25 homeruns was seen as a homerun hitter. The 80's in my opinion had a good balance between hitting and pitching. Only 1 team won multiple world series championships. 81 and 88 Dodgers. Down on paper that 88 Dodgers team was probably the least impressive world series champ in the 80's. They won it nonetheless.

Loved reading "The Sporting News" magazine in the 80's. Ricky Henderson was the best of the decade. The '86 Mets and the three World Series Oakland A's teams of late'80's were my favorites. Tony Gwynn was great, but I hated seeing him allow himself to get fat and sloppy-looking at the end of his career.
I just found out my drivers ed teacher played minor league for the yankees from 81-86 and in 2021 he has to deal with kids in a ghetto ass high school in Florida he was so close but 35 years later he’s a drivers ed teacher the weight lifting coach and a baseball coach for probably one of the shittiest teams in our division
How do they not feature REGGIE JACKSON? They talked about SCHMIDT and his great career they showed his leaving the game but they didn't do the same for REGGIE! In the all star game they would honer SCHIMDT but they didn't do that for REGGIE JACKSON in his final year. And I think that was fucked up! Loved reading "The Sporting News" magazine in the 80's. Ricky Henderson was the best of the decade. The '86 Mets and the three World Series Oakland A's teams of late'80's were my favorites. Tony Gwynn was great, but I hated seeing him allow himself to get fat and sloppy-looking at the end of his career.
