    AL I’ll make a suggestion: lay you 4 pieces of chain link fence or some kind of fencing at least 1.5’ wide on the ground around all four sides of the coop base outside. This will keep raccoons 🦝 and skunks from digging under the coop. This way you can move the pieces of fence each time U move the coop. Because they will dig under the coop at night if they’re hungry enough.

    • @samvalentine3206
      @samvalentine3206 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      Good idea, CC. I can imagine it wouldn't be too hard for a critter to dig under an edge to gain access, and that would be bad. Anything that can be done to inhibit their entry would be good. With some roofing panels to back up the tarp from bear push-in, it would be fairly stout to resist predator ingress. (we hope!) Of course, this video was shot earlier this week - we hope the test chickens made it and didn't become predator meals!

      @@brianharries no it won’t, move the coop and lay 4 pieces of wire on the ground around all four sides ! It’ll take 1 minute or less. This keeps Predators from digging under the cage. I don’t see why you say it would be hard to do a 2 foot wide piece of wire the length of that cage and four pieces of it and just lay it down on the ground beside the cage that’s not very hard to do. 🤷🏻‍♂️😏

    Just a word of advice, you need to have some hardware cloth underneath the tarp. The raccoons can climb up and tear right through the tarp I have just learned this from experience.

    • @kristab7900
      @kristab7900 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Also wrap some poultry net or hardware cloth around the bottom sides of the coup. Raccoons will pull the chickens through the holes in the sides and snack on your chickens that way.

      Yes! I'm a little worried about the top being a vulnerable point, too, with just a tarp and no metal to keep out the critters. AL: Maybe if you could surround the coop with a portable electric fence, that would add the needed protection from predators.

    • @robertlamb5105

    My uncle uses a mobile connect camera since he lives 3 hours away from his hunting property. Make sure to have a heavy duty latch that is racoon proof. They can open lift latches. You may also want to get cattle panels to protect tarp area on the roof in case a predator tears it. A secondary perimeter with a movable electric fence is handy too.

  • @HaroldReece
    @HaroldReece ปีที่แล้ว +21

    I like the look of the portable chicken pen. I, like others, am concerned about small predator critters digging under the walls of the pen. Hopefully those brave test hens will survive. Once you get your shop and welder up and running I'm sure you can build an improved version of something similar. Glad that Gina is recovering nicely, it just takes time. Thanks for sharing this with us.

    Glad to hear things are progressing! Might I suggest surrounding the coop with some electric mesh about 5 or 6 feet around it to train predators to stay away. I've seen coyotes slam against the mesh repeatedly to panic the birds closer to the other side, where another one can bite at the birds. Also have seen a bear peel a car open to get at food. The electric fence also works around the garden with bears too.

  • @janepeiffer672
    @janepeiffer672 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I would think that coons or coyotes could did under the fence and get the birds. Could they possibly even rip the tarp and drop in? My friend lost 38 birds to raccoons this summer . She was so upset she has not replaced them. I wish you well on your adventure. Gina is in my prayers. The backdrop in the beginning of this is absolutely gorgeous !!!

    Love the new coop. I am worried though about bears ripping the top. Also agree with CC Rider, you need some chain link on the ground around the coop so critters can't dig under. Otherwise, it looks like a wonderful sturdy coop and since it will hold so many birds, you will only be having to move one coop of meat birds and that will be a real time saver for you. I am so happy to hear Gina is recovering as expected in the right time frame. Y'all have a Blessed day.

    Really like the mobile chicken tractor! Looks very sturdy. The idea about using fencing on the ground around the perimeter is a great one. A smaller fencing grid opening , like 1” would be good, extending 1 foot from edge and even a little bit under the edge. Predators are vicious and persistent . Loved “Who wants to go with me??? “. My thoughts “ Me, Me!!!😂”

    The new outdoor chicken coop looks good, I trust it will be as robber safe as it needs to be. The tarpaulin roof does not sound totally proof against all comers. We know you have an interesting collection of threats, just waiting for a chance to attack. I guess you could always add wire netting to further beef up any protection if it looks like being needed. Smaller animals might just want to burrow under the edges to get breakfast, lunch or supper according to the time of day. Do you have plans for any other protection measures?

  • @joanswaby-mitchell3214

      That's a good point, Stuart. One would think a roost would be helpful. With all the natural straight small trees there, it shouldn't be too hard to cut a piece that fits in perfectly that could then be zip-tied in place, or lag-bolted from the edge through the fencing panel to hold it in place...

    Good Morning! An ostomy IS a hernia, in that some intestine pokes out through a hole. Very important not to push any more out, or they have to surgically repair it. I would get some chain link fence panels to lay down on the ground all around your chicken tractor. Some of your predators are quite happy to dig underneath to get a nice chicken dinner. Coyotes dig holes under my chain link fence all the time, just so they can hunt rabbits on my property. I think a coop with a wire bottom on it would be more secure, but that kind of defeats the purpose of a chicken tractor. What about laying boxes?

      I think there was some confusion about the puppy that was brought to Gina when she was visited by her sister in the previous episode. The puppy belongs to Gina's sister, so unless they come visit Gina again, chances are we won't be seeing video of the new puppy some time soon, as it belongs to Gina's sister - the pup was a visiting pick-me-up for Gina, thoughtfully provided on that visit - that's my guess.

    You need a steel roof on that, not just tarp. Looks like it would not stand up to a persistent large predator and the opening are too large to keep out the smaller ones.
