Jihadists are the worst nightmare for any country and people. They're not just self-interested dictators. They'll make discriminatory laws against women and non Muslims, they'll increase the indoctrination and militarization of children, they may attack other countries.
At the beginning of this war Assad was slowly losing and it looked hopeless for him. Until Russia stepped in and with no concerns for civilian casualties essentially bombed rebel held areas back into the stone age. Making existence in these areas not possible for the armed groups. The bombing would stop as Assads troops moved in and took control. Under these conditions it became impossible for the jihadists to win. If they ever took an area they would be bombed back out. Until the fighting got too close to Turkey. Then Turkey declared some areas near their border under Turkish protection and enabled a base for rebels. In fact the rebels mostly were not really rebels, they came from other countries to fight for their brand of Islam. Turkey gave them aid, safe haven, and enabled them to continue. If, as stated in this video Russian support is a lot less than in the past, the tide will again swing against Assad. And as correctly stated in the video, world events have left all Assads allies with other problems on their hands and unable to offer much or any help. Never a better time for the jihadists to strike.
If the rebels succeed my convern is Iran will keep sending fighters to fight. Doesn't matter the population of syria is 74% sunni they will want to impose i suspect. So fighting won't stop. I also fear at some point Russia and Turkey will have some tension. One conflict ends another one begins is what i am trying to say
Assad was already killing people without concern. He is the one who started this all. Even the jihadists, did he let in. Only they were meant to make things difficult for the Americans in Irak, but were pushed out. Having nothing else to do, they joined in when Assad started to shoot the peaceful protesters for more democracy. As is said in this interview, and I've heard it elsewhere also, we have yet do see how these people will work out. They seem to have distanced themselves from their jihadist past, so only time will tell.

In my opinion it's not good that Assad will fall. This will create a power vacuum again and ground for more Islamist extremism. We need a strong secular government to be in charge in Syria, and Assad is that.

The ones who fought the Assad regime in 2013-16 were moderates…they saved the very last Syrian Jews who had to flee Aleppo as the city collapsed. Personally escorted them to the border where they were taken by airplane to resettle in Israel. So, if these are the same people who were fighting last time they are western allies. Which makes them a MEMBER of the unipolar world, not contrary to it. Of course it’s possible that they’ve been replaced by hardliners. For those unaware: Jabhat al-Nusra, al- Qaeda's branch in Syria aiming to establish an Islamic state, attacked Aleppo yesterday. Anyone celebrating or supporting them under the guise of opposing the regime is clearly an extremist so be careful with them. This is what make the difference between moderate, secular opposition and extremist Islamists, who unfortunately dominate much of the opposition.
