to clarify, Hinata Shoyo (Sho-chan) and Kageyama Tobio ("King") were from different junior high schools (middle schools). They had that tournament the last year of their junior high and Hinata Shoyo's team lost.. for high school, he decided to go to Karasuno High School (where this Little Giant went) and he was surprised because Kageyama Tobio aka King also decided to go to Karasuno High.. so instead of rivals, they'll be teammates in the same high school

What makes Haikyuu one of the greatest animes and tv shows of all time is it's re-watchability.
The story, emotion and artistry holds up and moves me every rewatch.
Lifts my spirits and pushes me when I'm in a rut in my life (which as an adult is more often than not).
    My favourite of all time.

Oh, I hadn't realized you may not know this!
In japan, there is something called "Honorifics". Examples of that are "-chan" "-kun" "-san" "-sama", etc. They are used at the end of someone's name or title to show...something, I don't know how to call it xd For example, "-chan" and "-kun" are used to show affection towards someone you are closed with, and "-san" and "-sama" are used to show levels of respect("-san" is how you would refer to someone you just met and "-sama" to someone with a higher status than you, the only equivalents I can think about in english is "Sir" and "My lord" in english, but that might be very wrong, my first language is not english xd).
They all depend a lot of the context, the person, the connection between the people, etc. You can use them or not, although some times you might come off as rude if you don't, or cheeky/sarcastic, depending on the tone and context...Like I said, it depends on a lot of things, but that's the basics.
One that is used a lot in this anime is "-senpai". It's used to refer with respect to people that have been longer than you doing something or that are more experienced. In school, first graders may call like that second and third graders, but second graders would only call that third graders, and refer to the first graders with "-kun". It's weird

The yellow number is the set they are currently playing. 3 set matches. Each set is played to 25 points with a 2 point lead. First to win 2 sets wins they match. In tournament play, the final rounds play up to 5 sets. The 5th being played up to 15 points or whomever has a 2 point lead.
When he started Junior high, Hinata was the only member of the Boy's Volleyball club. In his last year on Junior high he finally had some freshman join the club. Add his 2 friends, and he finally had enough players to enter a tournament. So it was literally his first and last Volleyball game in Junior high school.

Eipsode 1 is middle school setting transitioning to first year of high school. The main character is Hinata (family name) Shoyo (given name). "Chan" is a Japanese honorific. Attaching "chan" to a friend's name demonstrates closeness. "Sho-chan" is Shoyo's first name shortened with the honorific "chan." Also, senpai is an honorific attached to names to indicate an upperclassman. You'll also hear "kun" and "san" attached to names, too, like "chan." "Kun" is an honorific used by someone with senior status toward their junior among male friends. "San" is attached to first or last names and it's equivalent is Mr. or Ms. and is respectful. Like in Korean, Japanese name order is last name first and first name last. For example, Kim Namjoon of BTS and Hinata Shoyo in Haikyuu!!.

Hinata, on his bicycle, in the opening scene, is in elementary school watching the high school nationals on TV. He admires a famous high school player for Kurasano High named "The Little Giant." This famous high school player is Hinata's original inspiration to play VB and someday attend Karsuno himself. "The Little Giant" is in the past...a former famous Karasuno player.

It's a small detail, but before losing at tournament and meeting "King", Shoyo was embarassed to be associated with Girl's Volleyball team. After the loss and "What you were doing all this time?", he understood that he can't just get by with desire to play and win, so he started to practice with girl's volleyball team for the remaining time in Junior High.

Hey guys! Thanks for the reaction! Haikyuu is one of my all time favourite anime, and even if I never played sports, the performing arts/artist side of me could still relate a lot to the story. Especially the team aspect when performing in theatre or a band ensemble. I cannot wait for you to get further into the series and watch this masterpiece of plot, character development and theme unfold before you! Also very excited for the continued Death Note reactions and any other potential anime!
Just to help you out, you literally just pronounce every single letter in the word. You guys were saying "Haiku" which is a form of Japanese poetry lol. Haikyuu is pronounced basically the same, just add in a "y" sound between "K" and "U". Haikyuu. Also, Junior High is the same as Middle school. In my part of Canada, it's almost synonymous with Middle School. In places like Japan or Korea, it is instead of middle school. So Middle School is grades 7 to 9 and then High School is grades 10 to 12. Hope that helps! Finally, the main character's name is Hinata Shouyou! Most people just call him Hinata, but his given name is Shouyou. His friends called him Shou-chan as a sort of nickname, considering -chan is a Japanese honorific used between close friends or to address children/grandparents/young women. It's sort of a term of endearment, but not in the Western sense...? If that makes sense.
Anyway, thanks so much for the reaction! Looking forward to seeing more! ^^

SO excited you guys are watching this, it was my first ever anime and still by far my favourite!! It's so lighthearted and fun yet it also deals with a lot of struggles that volleyball players on the shorter side (like me) tend to face. I'd like to share some basic terminology since I've played volleyball for most of my life. I suggest you pull up a diagram of the court while reading this explanation since I'm not very good at explaining things through text. I just sort of picture everything in my head and think that everyone else sees the same thing as me, so having an actual physical photo might help both of us out a lot LOL.
    Basic Info:
    - Setter: sets the ball up for the hitter to hit over the net (exactly what you guys said)
    - Libero: only in the rotation to pass the ball to the setter, they leave the court when their position reaches the front half of the court and the middle comes in, and they're also usually the shortest on the team
    - Hitter: the front right, left, and middle positions, usually tall and extremely powerful, if they're not tall then they have a great vertical that allows them to reach over the net
    - Middle: most of the time the tallest player, they're good for blocking the other team's hits and hitting through the other team's blocks, and they usually aren't good at passing (hence the reason for the libero)
    Other Info:
    - If your team loses a point and then gains the point back in the next play, players on your side of the court rotate clockwise one spot so everyone gets an equal opportunity to serve and also hit in the front row (except for libero lol). This doesn't happen for every point gained, though. Only when you regain the ball after the other team has possession.
    - Volleyball games have 2 or 3 sets (depending on who wins the first 2) and the point system is: 1: 25 points to win; 2: 25 points to win; and 3 (if they tie the first 2 sets): 15 points to win. You also switch sides of the net for each set and for the third set, you switch again after one of the teams reaches 8 points.
    - There is only 6 players on the court at a time (12 including both teams), but most lineups will have 7 players since the libero counts as an extra player even though they're not on all the time.
    - As your age group gets older, the height of the net changes. There's also different heights for the boys teams vs. girls teams since boys tend to just jump higher or are taller in general.
    - The libero comes on and off the court depending on where the 'middle' player is. So if the middle serves (meaning they're officially in the back half of the court) and loses the point, the libero comes in, and once the libero goes through the whole rotation in the back half of the court and it's time for them to move to the front half, the 'middle' comes back on until they serve again.
    - There's a middle line (or mid-line) that separates the front half of the court from the back half. This is to stop someone in the back half from coming to the front and hitting the ball, which is an illegal move.
    - The name of the position you're in is usually a number. The numbers go from 1-6 depending on where you are on the court. Here are the positions from the perspective of the net (front = at the net, back = at the back line of the court):
1 (back left). starting server and setter, usually the best server on the team, the setter starts here if you don't have first serve
2 (front left). opposite hitter, they hit from the left side of the net; this was my position lol
3 (front middle). middle, which i explained above
4 (front right). outside hitter, called this since usually the set comes from position 2/3 and is pushed to the outer edge
5 (back right). also an outside hitter, they play a more prominent role in the defense, they can only hit from behind the mid-line
6 (back middle). libero, which i explained above
Hopefully this made sense and if there's any questions you still have, or I just made things even harder for you to understand, then I'm more than happy to explain again but try to do a better job. Can't wait to rewatch the series with you guys!

What I do when I watch sports animes and I don't really know how the sport is played is: I google the sport and learn how the game is played, the rules, the positions and all this stuff. I doesn't give me spoilers but makes the watching experience ten times more enjoyable and exciting because I know what's going on! and the "playing the game" part is a very important part of a sports anime after all (obviously). Can seriously only recommend you guys (and everyone) to do the same!
(..You don't have to go to the extent I did when watching one of my favorite animes of all time and my absolute favorite sports anime "Ace of diamond", a baseball anime. I knew almost nothing and found myself researching so many details of all kinds of pitches and plays because I got so into it..)

Haikyuu! is absolutely life changing. It's not just volleyball you know? it teaches you to grow, how to welcome people into your life, how to accept change, and grief, and to take on challenges. im tearing up as i type. i miss haikyuu so much.
The whole show just feels like it has so much LIFE poured into it? Every character has their own journey and their own inspirations and it feels like there's so much heart and soul in the whole show. Even in the difficult moments it feels like a breath of fresh air
Even characters that could be perceived as ‘just side characters’ have their own little journeys and hurdles they need to overcome in order to be great at what they love, you dont often see that in anime and shows in general these days.

You guys are going to have the best time watching this series ! And I promise all those questions will have answers 😂
Time frame to help you guys lol
The beginning is him right at the start of middle school , watching “Little Giant”. So the flash backs are all those middle school years of him trying to find a team to play with ! Leading to the makeshift team you see in the episode, and since they lost in his last year of middle school that’s why he says “first and last” 😢 flash forward montage to him at Karasuno , same school he saw on TV where he runs into “The King” 😅🤘🏻 it’s really just keep getting better I’m so excited to follow along with you guys !

Oh my god! 🤯 You're only the second person I've seen react to a full anime series on TH-cam! 😭 Usually for youtube, bloggers cut anime episodes in half.
I'm so happy right now! I loved watching your reactions to BTS and now you've started watching Haikyuu too! It's probably my favorite anime of all time! I've rewatched it so many many many times! It's a very cool anime! I really hope you continue to watch it and look on TH-cam full of reactions. 🥰
    Thank you! 💜
I played volleyball in school. Not that I was very good, but I liked it. Now, unfortunately, I can't play anymore because my health has deteriorated.
I started watching this anime when I was in 5th grade and I played volleyball the second year. This anime really motivated me to practice more back then and I loved volleyball more. 💖
Now since I can't play anymore I watch this anime very often with even more pleasure and a little sadness.
(My English is not very good and I used a translator. So I apologize if there are any mistakes.)🙏

watching haikyuu (kyuu with the y pronounced like "you") is such a core memory for me. probably the best in its respective genre, even if the genre itself isnt usually my cup of tea. its super fun and enjoyable watch.
having said that, i do hope that you get to demon slayer eventually!! i havent watched fma so i dont know how it compares to kny (abbreviation for demon slayer), but i will die on the hill that kny is one of the best starter animes. the action, storyline, and emotion is all perfectly balanced and i truly believe that series only gets better and better and better with each season!!! its ranked 8 on my own personal list with death note at 3 and haikyuu at 27 (still good considering the list has 100+ animes) so i hope its something you guys get around to one day!

A pretty good anime to start watcing anime. Pretty realistic story, funny, heartwarming, exciting... You wont get bored.
I love how the "cool genius" (Kageyama) is an idiot, unlike the cliche.
And, also against the cliche, the 2 "rivals" are in the same team (usually in sports anime, they are in different schools that compete against each other)
I actually heard that a lot of japanese volleyball clubs started since this anime came to be

As far as sports go in anime Jared/Jordan...here are some of what I've gathered from Crunchyroll... that I hope you will enjoy. All with unique stories and backgrounds...not to mention the excitement you get from being able to resonate with the different characters as you watch, as you have done with Deathnote...which has a short spin-off (Death Parade)
You'll find many opening and closing songs as well as mid-way as the stories build up... from Kpop artists even our very own BTS. I love💜 you guys....enjoy!!

So I have played volleyball for 6 years, Kageyma Tobio(king of the court) is the setter for his team here, the setter in short words basically sets the ball to the hitters (the other players in the front row) so they can spike the ball over the net. There is 6 different positions in volleyball and they all have their own playing styles. I really like haiykuu because it really explains volleyball well so people that have never played it can understand the basics.

Also at 25 mintues when you guys said what is the yellow on the score board that is the set so in junior high its best 2 out of 3 sets and each set goes to 25 points. When they get to high school and have normal games I believe it would be best 3 out of 5 at least that's how it was for me at my school.

o and one more piece of information to make it more pleasant for you to watch, namely the judge's gestures. If the referee shows 2 fingers after the whistle, it means a double hit faul , if after the whistle he raises both hands towards each other, bent at the elbows, it means that the ball hit the out-of-bounds, if before the serve he waves his hand from one side of the net to the other, it means permission to serve, however, when after the whistle he puts his hand on the net on one side, it means that the player on that side touched the net.
