I just ordered a 2024 one and it plays beautifully, everything works and I haven’t noticed any fret buzz or anything yet. The neck feels great it’s thin and flat and the pickups on this one in particular are extra heavy for rock

Those scratchy pots are dirty from the factory. A little dioxite will fix those right up. Even the switch. I had a problem with the SE Paul's guitar. Spent 14 bucks on a can and problem solved. You can use it to clean pedals and pots on an amp that get dirty all the time. Try that and see if it works.

I bought one cheap as a project. The tuning stability was sorted by my guitar tech buddy adding an extra trem spring, locking tuners, careful filing of the nut and adjustment of the trem. Personally I hate the standard bridge pickup which is ludicrously overwound so I fitted a Duncan Jazz which nicely matches the output of the neck. So far I haven't had any issues with pots & switches.

  • @YOJAYO

Well honestly I'm buying this thing in 2022 and have no problems at all with the tone switch, it stays distorted all the time when switching between pickups and same thing with clean!

  • @dustinhammond1380
    @dustinhammond1380 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I have this same model and ran into an issue with the bridge pickup having a low output, I was putting a new bridge pickup in it anyway, so ignored it and installed the new pickup, good clean solder connections and everything, sounded great! Then noticed it was cutting out in the bridge position like yours in this video, and thinking it was me that made a mistake, shelved it to troubleshoot later and work on other projects. After seeing you have had this same issue, I’m going to just replace the pots and toggle, and rewire the whole thing to give it another chance. Thank you for taking the time to make this video! It’s good to know it wasn’t just me!

Seems a lot of the things you pointed out are very easy fixes, eg. a little graphite on the nut and a quick spray of deoxit on the toggle switch and pots probably would resolve your issues. It seems you actually like the parts that matter - hardware, pickups etc. I personally dont think your issues are deal breakers.

  • @jimo4106

I own one and will admit it took some time and effort to get the trem' system set up correctly. You have to find the correct tension and then re-set action and intonation. I also had to widen the nut slot for the low E. But it's rock solid now. No issues with electronics, The pickups are very sensitive to string height. They can sound harsh if they are too close to the strings. All said and done, this is a fantastic guitar!

I have a 2016 PRS SE Tremonti Custom. LOVED everything about this guitar when I bought it (mid 2017). I am a new player.
Lately, I noticed that the pickup switch seemed to start not working all the time, so here I am searching around to see what the deal is and I ended up at this vid. The guitar sat unused for a while due to an unexpected move / house remodel - it was either in the bag or hanging on the wall.
Was going to call PRS (their phones have been down for two days) to discuss and also considered taking it back to the store where I bought to see what they had to say about it.
From reading the comments, hopefully the switch just needs to be cleaned and I don't have to start spending a bunch of extra money replacing things. It stays in tune fairly well, but will probably be getting some locking tuners for it anyway. My pots and PU's seem to be good, at least for now.

I have one that is rock solid, but it happens... I have noticed a lot more complaints regarding the SE quality control over the last few years and I think it's due in part to the supply chain stuff they had been experiencing for so long, as well as struggling to meet demand... I think that factory over there was cranking them out sort of haphazardly to meet demand... then here in the US we've had a real problem with the workforce since Covid. So few people are willing to work and standards are lowered in order to fill positions which may explain these issues slipping through the cracks at the Maryland factory. Then thanks to inflation the prices are rising, and you end up getting less for your money. But it's not just PRS. I bought a Fender last year that was having electronics issues, opened it up to find the most horrendous soldering job I've ever seen... Sweetwater took it back and sent me another that was much better. What I've done is learn to do everything myself. Now when I get a guitar, if I'm not happy with any aspect of it, I just fix it.

I had the same issues (electronics and tuning stability) on 2 PRS CE 24 (made in USA), but with the same tuners / tremolo. I ended in seeling both of them. Luckily, I own a PRS 408 and not issues at all. 800$ is not cheap, at this price you should'nt have those kind of issues on a BRAND NEW guitar. I know Emerson provides wiring kits for PRS SE. But if you spend 100$ for electronic wiring kit, 200$ more for a true usa made PRS tremolo, 200$ for PRS usa made locking tuners , you end up with a 1300/1400$ guitar and for this price, I think you can buy a second hand USA made PRS ... I wanted to purchase the guitar you are showing us, because I am a huge fan of Alter Bridge and Mark Tremonti, but I don't want to have to spend so much more money in order to get it right. For this price range, Ibanez and Yamaha can give you more for your money... I don't have enough feedback on Shecter and ESP/LTD to give my opinion....

There are many factors I think. First might be how shipping was handled which is a huge factor because they are shipping it from the other side of the world to maryland and then to many parts of the world. When I ordered my standard 24, the pot shaft was bent, it wouldn’t stay in tune and it wasn’t playable out of the box. However, I believe the nut, pickups and pots are all extremely cheaply made.

Given that it's a Korean model, it's definitely fairly old. I can bet you bought the guitar second hand, so it might've been abused or kept in improper conditions (likely saw enough dust in its lifetime). if you got it for cheap, it's likely the reason the seller tried to get rid of it.
Flipping the switch on and off does not clean it. taking the back covers off, loosening the components and spraying them with air might. Worst case scenario, you replace the switch and the pot, and you end up with a perfectly fine guitar.
Can't see why PRS is at fault for how a guitar was maintained. On top of that, in time, components sometimes do go bad, that's normal, especially after years of abuses. Replacing them once in a while is expected.
Also, PRS hardware on these guitars is usually great for tuning stability. Make sure it's set up properly as trems do need correct setting up in order to function as expected. Lastly, if the tuning issues persist after a proper set up, in 99% of the cases, the nut is the issue. It might've been worn out (you never know what strings were used on it without proper filing of the slots, and they might've cut into the nut). Also, if you've stringed the guitar with thicker strings that the nut slots, you'll also run into issues as the nut will hold onto the strings. Fixing the nut or replacing it may solve the tuning stability issue.

solving a tuning problem is a simple cheap fix... change the tuners! clearly the turners are not strong enough to hold the wham... and when you have a trem system never get it without a locking head! unless you lightly use the trem w/ proper gauge strings...

"OMG I bought a budget, Korean-built budget guitar and I got a budget, Korean-built guitar." These fools need to realize they aren't going to get a real PRS until they get into the, minimum, $1500 price range. I have a real PRS Tremonti II guitar. It was over $4000. It's both a work of art and a perfected instrument of music science. Don't buy a budget, foreign-built, beginner-level guitar and expect to get the same quality as an American built Gibson or PRS. Obviously, some Japanese guitars are the exception to the foreign-built caveat as there are some excellent built Japanese Jacksons running around out there that can keep up with the PRS or the Gibson American models, but they are going to cost you about the same as their American competitors and have similar quality. Don't buy budget guitars expecting the same fit and finish as their American/Japanese made upper-end counterparts.

I just bought one 2nd hand and noticed the same issue straight away 😢. The switch doesn’t work in 50% of the times I use it. Guess I’ll have to do some replacements. 🫤
