Step 1: Sell lovelocks with you having a universal key. Step 2: Unlock and remove them a few days later with your universal key. Step 3: Rub off the marker and sell them again. Step 4: Profit!
Actually you don't even need universal key. Those lock are very easy to lockpick even for amateurs. And I'm sure that some of them do this to resell them.
This shitty tradition even came to completely non-tourist spots. In my hometown there is a bridge over one of the busy streets and even there people put those locks.
We need to just have undercover police officers and signs that say "200 euro fine for damaging property with locks". They'll pay for their salary with just 1 or 2 people caught and eventually people will get the message. If not, it just becomes a huge revenue stream.
As I posted here yesterday and the replay isn’t here anymore. Maybe don’t use Nazi methods but put someone there who actually explains to people what is happening. And put up a place where it is allowed to put those locks. Politicians, corruption, rich companies and people in charge put way more damage on things and the environment than these locks. Make art out of them, including them.
I'm with you on this one. No, it's not up there with the idiots that carved their names in the walls of the Colosseum, but it's still vandalism in my book...
I agree 100% the locks are vandalism. When I was at the Sacré-Cœur some years ago there were no locks. It's such a shame to see them there now. The train/pedestrian bridge over the Rhine in Cologne Germany is covered with them also. They should fine the people selling them.
The difference is that in Cologne, nobody minds them. It’s a railway bridge that can take a whole lot more weight than the locks add to it and as long as the (very ugly) fence that they cover up holds, they can remain.
It's cheap, it's fast and you can take a picture of it. That's much easier than washing the dishes every uneven week of the month for the rest of your life.
Clearly cities can afford to have someone come by and remove them. It brings in tourism money to the locals, more jobs for removing locks, and the permanent stress is only caused when it's ignored for so long so keep it to weekly cleaning. (or more if needed. If a TH-camr and a couple others can volunteer enough time to do it for free, governments can pay a couple people to spend their working hours going around and cutting locks. It also takes money out of scammer's pockets.) I see no issue with it if cities keep up with cleaning them and see no downsides to cities removing them. People will pay tax one way or another, this way there are more jobs for the people at the least.
Long overdue, unfortunately they are indulging the people that do it by providing them with somewhere else to do it. It's not a tradition, it's a recent invention.
I agree, it’s vandalism. Those locks look disgusting and take away the beauty of the surrounding area. I hope a law is passed that allows the police to fine people caught doing it.
This is s stupid tourist behavior. They're doing this on the Brooklyn Bridge too. Ugh. There are signs indicating that it's a $100 fine. Wait! Can the sellers just remove them every day and resell them to the next couple?
Actually, in Prague, all of them were removed, and there is a barrier now. The sad news is that the fence where people use to put the locks is collapsing
I was recently in Paris, and yes, thousands of them on the railings by the Sacre Coeur, and at least half a dozen hawkers around the area at the top of the funicular approaching couples selling more locks - and lots of people buying.
I was just on Charles Bridge and you passed by. I was going to say hi but you looked like you were in a rush. Love this channel keep up the good fight 👏

I love that commenters were getting so mad at the removal of locks due to it being a "local tradition"... x3 You have my respect, lads! The sheer level of brainless entitlement it must require to rock up to a foreign country and effectively litter (albeit elaborately) and scream about how's "tRaDiTiOnAl".
Im on board with cutting the locks. If things like tik tok and you tube didn't exist, it would be niche and cute to do locks. A secret, as it stands it has nothing to do with love.
The original love lock tradition is allegedly in Pécs, Hungary (dating back to the 1980s). Pécs has leaned into it, though, and built an extra fence just for locks.
In Bytom those locks are even on a bridge over one of the main streets. Although not as many but it is weird to see something like this on non tourist place.
Love locks should be placed on a specific spot in each country where the structure can handle it. However if it weights really 700 kg or 1400 pounds... It's getting ridiculous. A bridge that collapsed because of love locks is stupid. Than they have to remove everything, fish the locks out of the water or the locks may pollute the water,... and they have to build a new bridge all because of some tourists that likes to put their lock on bridges... You can even say that the love locks is starting to become a scam on it's own if someone guesses the combination or use an universal key and resell the lock again later.
The only thing I find funnier than Janek’s hatred for Love Locks is people getting mad at him about it 😂 Maybe in parts of the US they do this but in the South we’d usually carve initials and dates in a tree. But I guess not many people carry pocket knives in Europe lol

These locks are a waste of energy and materials and cause cities damage and maintenance costs. They are really just a form of littering and are no better than if everyone started sticking chewing gum to a bridge for some reason, or all tourists putting graffiti in one place.
