Have to admit, I love the app so far - apart from the fact I can only run it on my mobile, so the screen size is rather restrictive. I've tried on a number of tablets but they appear to be too old to run the app. The ones where I've managed to load it don't show text in the buttons and appear to hang before a quest kicks off (also none of the narration can be heard). I'm contemplating the purchase of a Lenovo M10 HD tablet - has anyone successfully loaded and used the app on such a device? Many thanks.
I’ve used the app on an iPad and cast it on a TV with an Apple TV. World of difference from an iPhone especially after the landscape view update for tablets.
For the moment, I've taken to running it on my pc using Bluestacks, emulating a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, which is one of the devices they definitively say they support (although there's obviously others that will run it too). The emulator brings it's own issues though, in that whenever you move a character, even left or right, the map auto scrolls up or down. It gets a bit frustrating. I believe this behaviour happens on chromebooks too.
I found it very interesting! I would acquire the expansion for the scenario and the figures. As for the tiles and tokens, I am planning to photo-reduce and remount on card, at least for the newer pieces, I would just reuse older door, block, and other utility pieces. But it was good to see the new pieces in situ. Thanks!
Some of your videos may not be exciting, but they are still nice, relaxing and provide a lot of wholesome feels. Thank you for that. While 'scale creep' might cause discomfort, it is rarely game-breaking. These HeroQuest issues remind me about different editions of Space Hulk. Old editions had small squares that housed models on 25mm bases. New editions (as well as tiles that used to be available on GW website) have 30mm squares, and those are good enough for models with 32 mm bases. Of course, that don't save you from 'modern' terminator/tyranid warrior bases.
As I have 2 sets of the original HQ and all the expansions I am sticking to those, but the new versions do look nice. I have somehow lost 1 Ogre from the "against the ogryn hoard" expansion but that only really impacts on one quest.
while waiting for the remake to ship after the pledge ended, I ordered myself a custom made board through boardgamesmaker, taking a scan of the classic board blown up so that the squares were 1 inch in size (and quad fold, with matte finish, which had less glare on camera) and I quickly saw it would be no big deal to use classic elements in the Remake. the other way around is a little trickier (I have some larger reaper figures that gave the same problem... they're just a little bit large to squeeze a bunch of them together in a small room). the remake tiles are also a little big on the classic board. if you don't mind some overlap, it's okay. rarely will you have to put a bunch of tiles in one room, usually just 1-3 at most, so you can shift things around so they fit, though they're more comfortable on the remake board.
Yeah, the video shows the new tiles on the classic board. Obviously the resize issue becomes more prominent for the tiles that cover multiple squares, like the throne room overlay, or when you have several tiles together.
Really helpful thank you. I've got the EU original main game and the return of the witch king. Thinking of picking up the new expansions and until this video wasn't aware of the scale differences. Will also try and find out the differences between the NA and EU versions of the quests
I have a video on the channel talking about a lot of the differences between NA and EU editions. You can find it here: th-cam.com/video/bpkuSHsQxGQ/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for making this video as I own the old Heroquest and the old Return of the Witchlord but recently bought the new Keller’s Keep. I was of course thinking I could save $100 or more trying to get the old one. Sadly those new tiles are an improvement over the old ones.
I’m surprised you didn’t talk about the cards here. Some expansions have additional treasure cards. With the change in card size and the card back artwork, you can’t exactly hide the new cards in the old deck.
Because this is an old video and at the time only Kellar’s Keep and Return of the Witch Lord were out, neither of which had cards to mix into the treasure deck.
I had the opposite problem with my neoprene board - the squares are so big none of the room overlays fit! No big deal, doesn’t matter for homemade quests 😜
yes indeed, this was a big worry for many fans in the lead up to the release. I have to remind myself most players out there didn't get a chance to pledge, so the retail version is the first time they're seeing it all. the "new heroes" are online for all to see even if one never purchased the Mythic box (Avalon Hill's web page and in the companion app). it's a bigger challenge to adapt NA stuff to EU and vice versa (many on YeOldeInn have done just that with past releases). the board is big enough for the classic pieces, and the furniture in the remake is the same or sometimes smaller than classic. I already use reaper minis mixed in with my classic pieces, so it's not as big a jump aesthetically as it is for some (some want all their models to match precisely or they don't want to play). the rules are so similar between classic NA and remake that it's hardly any trouble at all (unless trying to cram larger pieces onto the smaller classic squares). good to hear your perspective!
The new sizing was something I talked about during the crowdfunding, so I thought it was worth doing a follow-up video showing the physical placement of those elements on the old board. I might talk about the new heroes in another video, but they weren't relevant to the subject matter here. Might do it if I ever get my guardian knight, which I ordered but am not entirely confident I will receive.
Great video!! Arghhhhh Why on earth did they do round bases and went up in scale?? Such a bummer. I would love to get the new stuff but the incompatibility issue makes me wonder if I should. Maybe the only way to play the expansions is to completely swith over to the new system...thank you for your videos, super helpful!!
I recommend to buy or made a new maps 1inch and play with old mini. It's help a lot when there is a lot doors and monsters. And then you can buy extension
The new Hasbro board is a really nice size. I know some places were doing neoprene mats at one point. Not sure if Hasbro will clamp down on that. They should offer an official one.
the classic minis are just slightly bigger than the classic squares, so you run into crowding issues in some places (iirc, ROTWL near the end had some pretty cramped rooms!), but it is worse in the remake I agree
It's funny my only complaint is I wish everything was a pinch bigger. As far as the intonation rules are concerned there must be an addition on line somewhere
I'm not sure what you mean by intonation rules. All of the original rules, cards, and assets for original expansions are easily available online, but I'm talking about buying the new expansions and what you get in the box.
Ok, I have the original but I think if I just get a second hand new edition (bigger) replacement board everything will work fine. My old stuff with fit nicely and the new stuff will fit correctly. I am excited to play this game again after having found my original box with all the stuff and it is in superb condition. Just left it on the same shelf for almost 33 years. Since I got it for Xmas in 1990,
Really, I appreciate these videos of yours not only from HeroQuest but in general from which I also discovered things I was not aware of, and please what I am about to say now is my very personal opinion that does not want to create absolutely any negative discussions with none but it is simply something I want to say, I appreciate your videos because it shows that you are a person who loves to play but above all have fun with board games ☺️ while around I am seeing many people who are hating this new version, I can understand criticisms for the price or even subjective criticisms related to personal opinions and tastes and absolutely nothing to say about this indeed as such must be respected, but on the other hand there are people who hate it with the most disparate reasons ... related to new style, gender of the characters, for its extreme ease for which it must not be bought as there are better games or even to complain about the new characters they have created ... but maybe I'll be strange I don't know 😅 not to find extreme problems in addition of course to some small defect that you also talked about in your videos ... I'm so sorry for these words of mine if this comment bothers you I will delete it immediately, anyway thank you very much for everything 😋😊
You are more than free to leave your thoughts in the comments here, and thanks for the kind words. I don't think Hasbro's edition of HeroQuest is perfect, but I think they did a really good job, and they preserved the heart of the original game, which is a solid achievement. I will admit, I didn't like the new characters they created during the crowdfunding - I thought the orc bard was silly, and the other too seemed weak as well - but I did order the guardian knight character. I'm not entirely sure if HeroQuest can really handle swapping out characters, as the original four all seem so essential, but I guess I will find out!
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Ohh no, thank you very much to you for allowing me to express myself and as far as your words are concerned I can only say that it is fine as well, as it is right that something can not please everyone, for example for me the new characters I also like the Orc bard for the simple fact of being something absolutely out of place and nonsense that personally makes it fun for me ... The playthrough on my channel using my original copy was done in conjunction with the app, and as I play through I talk about the differences a bit. Some of the things you can fudge quite easily, because the app is more of a companion rather than something that is doing all the number crunching for you. For example, every enemy in the app has a "kill" button that you can click to remove them from the board, so it doesn't matter if you are playing the European rules where everything has a single hit point.

I think they both have merit. First of all, if you are doing this, make sure you buy the right size for the version of the game you have. Some upgrades are for the original version. Second, the game already has treasure chests so you don't need to buy upgrades for those. I have no idea how many of each tile are ever used at one time. I'm not going to go through 30+ currently published official adventures (way more if you include fan created adventures and adventures from original expansions that haven't currently been remade) counting how many of each are used at any one time. Besides new adventures may use more, and if you create your own adventures you may use even more again. Best bet would be to buy as many upgrades as there are tokens in the box.
i have a quick question, the dollar tree masters of the universe figures & the Disney figures could they be used for heroquest if able to find a converter to create stats for them?
I don’t live in the US so haven’t seen them personally but people seem to say they are 2 to 2.5 inches and the bases look very wide so I think they would be too big.
The best thing to do is to get the the new hero Quest board it's bigger anyways so it is better and then the expansion will fit on it and just try to 3D printing miniatures the new board is bigger so you have more room it's the way to go the only thing I'm mad about is that they didn't include the custom Boss characters like ulag and wardiz ect ect
They are the roughly the same, but monsters, furniture and doors are sometimes slightly repositioned, the number of enemies in each location is sometimes different, and traps are sometimes in different places or of different types.
