I think it's wonderful that you decided to surprise your parents. My dad was going to be 81 in June but he passed away in February. You always think you have all the time in the world and the truth is you just never know. Cherish the time you have together and make every moment count. Enjoy your trip and make some fantastic memories with your parents.
7:58 Love this so much! Take every opportunity life throws at you. We lost my mom very suddenly when we expected her to live many more years. Life is unpredictable. Take the trip together, answer the call, say I love you. Every time. Hope your time with your parents is unforgettable! ❤
I highly recommend the Bose QuietComfort headset. I routinely take 12-14 hour plane rides to Asia and these are so efficient I often have 70% battery life left. Also the noise canceling is the best I’ve found. They pack into a nice tight carrying case that is included. #1 on my travel essentials. I have AirPods Pro 2 as a backup as well
Same here - I discovered NC headphones only a couple of years ago and I absolutely need them when I'm flying. I can never sleep on flights no matter how long the flight is, how comfortable the flight is or what time of day I fly out. Its torture and NC headphones have helped make it less painful. I got the Bose QC 35 II and I only use it when I'm flying. I have no use for them otherwise, but they are still well worth it.
God the last part made me tear up and I might start again just while writing this. It’s obvious that you cherish your time with your father and appreciate that he is still in your life. Get across that pound and surprise the heck out of them!! I lost my father on Mother’s Day morning in 2020 to The Vid , he would have turned 70 that July. I spent most of my adult life chasing and acquiring that almighty dollar and just figured I would catch up with my dad “later” and see some sights with him. I’d trade every dollar I’ve ever made to have him back. Wishing you the best time ever in London with your parents!!! ☀️ thank you so much for sharing that last video part with us.
3 extra things i always bring 1: large beanie - great buffer for my head from plane surfaces/ hotels & hostels pillows, large enough to pull down & cover my eyes so blocks light, also great for bad hair day. 2. Microsoft surface duo phone- an affordable 2020 foldable phone which is triple functional as a backup phone, media player, & e-reader in compact form instead of just an e-reader 3. Tiny first aid kit- better to have it & not need it than need it & not have it. Includes various size bandages, wipes, tweezers, latex gloves and nail clip. I just attach to my bag with a carabiner so doesnt take up space
My husband and I will be traveling to Melbourne in October. Our trip will include stays in Queenstown, New Zealand/ Hobart, Tasmania and Sydney. We are visiting his brother who has been living in Melbourne for quite a long time and has established dual citizenship. With the exception of the Bahamas, this will be our first long haul international trip. I continue to find your videos very helpful in planning for this adventure 😊
New subscriber and I like how you break down your videos. I’ve traveled extensively so here are some other things I bring. It sounds like a lot but packs small….. A mini surge protector with multi plugs and usb outlets. Can be very useful if stuck for hours in an airplane lobby and I need to share outlets with others. Also great in hotels… In addition to a thermal bottle for water from airport I bring a thermal mug with non slip bottom and lid. Handy in airports, airplane, and hotel after I’ve arrived. Also holds more than what the flight attendant will give me on their rounds… Small nice color coded zippered bags inside my day pack so médecine, cables, documents, etc are easy to grab when I need them. Keeps things tidier, too… in addition to tea bags I bring single serve flavor packets - usually lemonade because I don’t drink a lot of sodas…spork and non disposable chopsticks and have used them more than you can imagine… lightweight camping towel because it’s small but can clean up messes quickly…a couple of carabiners so I can attach my jacket or my day pack to my other luggage…a small pad of Post-it Notes… 36” or so of duct tape rolled small so I can McGiver a fix when something inevitably breaks…and lastly I bring disposable ear plugs for others - I snore and offer to my seat-mates as a way saying ‘sorry’.
My husband and I are flying to London in September-our first international trip. I’ve been gradually gathering all those comfort necessities you mentioned for our flight. The last audiobook I listened to is The Last Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine. Highly recommend. I’ve read it several times. Enjoy Portugal and surprising your parents. 😊
I'm so glad to know that moist towelettes don't need to go into your liquids bag. I had a bunch of insect-repellent towelettes that I crammed into my liquids bag on a recent trip. Now I know I can save room by not needing to cram them in there.
My go-to books are the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. I’ve read the entire massive series numerous times, but with a bad memory I discover “new” things every time.
I learned to pack a large ziplock bag to place your essential valuables through security checkpoints as it keeps your stuff together & aids a speedy walk through. I try to remove keys, wallets & any metal items to leave in these plastic bags. I have left phone cases behind & now leave them all together. Oh & lastly I keep a few dollars in currency to purchase any last minute essentials I want.
Thanks, Megan! That’s a great idea, surprising your parents in Portugal. You don’t know when or if you could do anything like this again. My next flight is to Bozeman, MT in September for a Yellowstone trip. My next flight to Europe is in April, a cruise in Holland and Belgium. I am not sure how much more travel I’ll be able to do - my age and physical problems make flying not much fun. But you have a good trip!
I'm flying to Belfast on Monday, but since I'm a Texan living just south of London, the flight is only a couple of hours. Love your time with your folks.
If you don't have room for noise-canceling headphones, definitely pack earbuds as the ones they give you can be very uncomfortable - even painful. I also pack Hothands Insole foot warmers that I slip into my shoes at the start of an international flight. They warm up as soon as the packet is opened and last for 9 hours. I get very cold during long flights and these help me stay comfortable until I arrive at my destination.
Not super exciting to anyone else but I’m thrilled my 9 year old son and I get to fly to Phoenix in 2 weeks to go visit my family for a couple weeks and from there we fly to Michigan for a large family reunion with my husbands family. Should be quite the adventure!
Our next trip is Down Under! March 2024 we are doing a six-week Australia/New Zealand trip. It includes a 12-day cruise around New Zealand. We have friends in Australia that we will be travelling with...just can't wait!
That’s a cute thing you’re doing by surprising your parents! I’m flying to Lisbon next month, and I got my ticket the 1st week of March. This year is more expensive, but I feel good about my $1000 ticket from San Francisco.
I am flying to Orlando, FL in July for a visit to Disney World and a Disney Cruise with kids and grandkids. November trip to Hong Kong as my wife has miles on Cathay Pacific airlines that will expire if not used. I also pack in a separate location in my back pack the stuff that has to come out at security. The most surprising thing I pack are my noise cancelling headphones. I simply can not understand airplane videos without them.
I have a small Yeti camp cup with a sip lid (switched to this from a thermos) and I ask the flight attendants to fill that with water or coffee instead of the tiny cups (or I pour the tiny cup in that) so I don't end up with my drink all over me. Bonus, I can keep tea bags or oatmeal packets and when I'm in the airport for a layover, I can ask a coffee shop to fill my mug with hot water and add my own things. Because sometimes I don't want to spend $8 on trail mix but I need a snack.
If I put anything into the overhead bin, I put it in the one across the aisle from me rather than the one directly overhead. That way I can keep an eye on it if someone else opens the bin.
As my trip abroad slowly nears I am starting to watch these videos. I have flown a reasonable amount in Australia , first flight was way back in 1966. First jet flight Melbourne to Brisbane. Any way this will be my first international flight and your videos have been a great help. some really good tips to be had. I have sensitive eyes and you have brought that to my attention. Ears is a issue more than my eyes though. For that I recommend pressure reducing ear plugs.
Thank you for this!! I'm flying in two weeks internationally and these will definitely come in handy! Love your channel, I watch your videos everyday!!
I'm taking my 14 year old daughter to London and Edinburgh in the fall over a long weekend with a ProD day. She's my travel buddy as my husband is more of a home body. Enjoy your trip to Lisbon.
I always bring ear plugs, eye mask and inflatable pillow to catch some zzz during a long flight. Melatonin is a game changer the first night in a new time zone and the first night back home.
I will be flying into Rome in the autumn. You will love Portugal! Been there twice already ( once solo without any problems) and plan to go again in the near future.
I had a layover in Chicago and was flying out the following day. The problem was that my luggage wasn't released so after 12 hours of travel I couldn't change my clothes. I did have a hotel room, so at least I had my carry-on, but now I'll make sure I have a change of clothes, too. Thanks for the reminder.
As far as spillage goes, I worked for the airlines and also had a side gig at a bookstore. My company paid us dirt back then, but we did have flight benefits. The bookstore would let us buy books, read them and return them as long as we returned the book in good shape. Naturally, when I bought an expensive book and took it on a work flight, I spilled coffee on myself and on my expensive book...which I still have almost 30 years later.
Hi Megan, looks like my post got deleted so I'll rephrase my advice: Instead of using unknown USB outlets make it a habit of taking two fully charged, say, 5.000 mAh power banks with you so you don't fall prey to USB juice jacking by which data can be exfiltrated from your device unbeknownst to you. If you need to use a USB port, though, make sure to use a 'USB condom' which makes sure no data can be synced.
This is the third of your videos I've just finished watching. As I'm a bit older than you, I have meds I need to take during my long flights, so I have a padded bag (a little smaller than the one you showed) to carry only those meds or other essentials I might need on the plane or transfer airport. All the other meds are in my backpack and supplements in my carry-on. Although I have over the ear headphones, never have room for them, so bring both wired and wireless earbuds. My passport is always in my shirt pocket along with my current ticket as they are basically the only thing I need to get around, everything else can be replaced. Also, on my last trip back to the US, They checked all the charging batteries for capacity - fortunately none were very high, so I now pack them for easy access by inspectors.
Thanks for watching, Rob! From you comments it sounds like you are a seasoned traveler and have come up with some great hacks of your own! Happy travels and hope to see you back here!
I've been telling folks to carry-on onboard and keep their charges for electronic devices with them but some decided to check them in due to weight and hassle. Well, that check-in bag with all their charges was unaccounted for... so they saved a hassle to get a bigger hassle. 😞
My last visit to Lisbon took place during the end of a transatlantic cruise. Back then, we didn't have the resources nor time to spend in Portugal. So our visit was short, one day, actually one afternoon, then we flew back to California the next morning. I look forward to a lengthy stay in Lisbon. Hope you had fun surprising your parents. I enjoy your post. They all have been resourceful. Safe travels!
Reading keeper of enchanted rooms…a truly creative novel. Heading to Paris tomorrow for a river cruise on the Seine. I plan to download a couple of anthologies of books so I don’t run out of things to read if Wi-Fi is spotty.
This is all new to me since I have never so much as gone on a flight within the United States. As it is, I am working on a trip to Enugu, Nigeria to spend time with a young lady that I intend to marry. Thus, I am doing as much research as possible on all aspects of travel needs and the like.
Please post a vid about your trip when you return. Looking forward to seeing your destination specific current info as we are headed to Portugal in September. Thanks Megan and safe journey!
Going to Germany next week. Been to Europe several times before so I’m not new to long haul flights but a video like this is always helpful as a reminder. Thanks and enjoy Portugal! Oh I’m still listening to Simon Reeve’s “Journeys to Impossible Places” and Garth Stein’s “The Art Of Racing In The Rain” audiobooks.
Safe travels. I always enjoy your travel tips and used some on our recent France - Spain trip. Instead of the large noise canceling headphones consider giving the Apple AirPods Pro a try. I used to carry Bose noise canceling headphones but recently switched to the AirPods Pro and think their noise canceling feature is as good as or better than the full sized Bose. Portugal was one of our favorite trips. Lisbon is a great city. I think it is an awesome idea to surprise your parents.
I am going through Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and loving it on my last trip and will carry on reading it on my Kindle for my next trip. I do not go on social media while traveling but will catch up with your videos upon my return. Stay safe, Megan, enjoy yourself in Portugal annnnd Happy Vlogging!!!!
I will be flying into Christchurch, New Zealand, for my 4th visit to NZ's south island in September! Visiting my cousin and his wife is the primary reason for the trip while a side trip to Doubtful Sound and Queenstown are options that seem likely!!
Great advice once again Megan. I carry a video bag (do a lot of video taking) with some personal things inside as my under the seat bag with the passports and such. I do not put a wallet there as you do, I always keep my wallet in my front pants pocket at all times. I disagree with one thing - It would be impossible for you to end up like trash at the end of a long flight - not the way that you look !! -- hahaha. Enjoy your flight and so glad you will be with your parents -sounds wonderful !!
@@islandboy4445 If you are asking me- Long ago when we had film cameras we were reluctant to put equipment through x-ray machines but with digital there is no problem and with our camera and video stuff we never had a problem.
While in the military, I also had a smaller bag I can pull out with the items I wanted/use during the flight and put the carry backpack in the over head bin. Did the same in a military aircraft, sometimes*no overhead or under seat storage on jump seats🥲
Thanks Megan for the tips, I’m heading to Barcelona, London and Dublin shortly so I took notes of a couple of them, really appreciated. I hope you’re having a nice time in Portugal and you gave your parents a nice surprise 😜 remember to use sun protection!
My next flight is Las Vegas to Amsterdam, via Heathrow. I picked a five hour layover, to insure my baggage makes the connection (it didn't last year.. but it was on the return trip). The last book I read was "No Time for Goodbye" by Lindsay Barclay.
@@PortableProfessional I had a long layover in Frankfurt on the way out, and had no issues with my bags. However, the first night in the Diamond Club on the cruise ship, two passengers came in. They were supposed to have arrived the night before the cruise (like I did). Instead, they got a two days of hell, flying around the eastern seaboard and western Europe. They made the ship about 10 minutes before sailing. Their luggage did not connect with them. They were also supposed to be on the ship for seven weeks. I found out later over 200 passengers sailed without their luggage. Baggage handling in Europe was problematic. I did get my bags delivered to my house 30 hours later. The only things I really missed were my electric razor and my Crocs. But the lesson was learned; take the long layover.
I have that same bag in green and it is THE BEST personal item to pack. Because it holds so much I rarely need to check a bag and only need a carry on. Depending on the length of my trip that may be the only bag needed. Loce that bag😄 Also I just finished reading We Lie Here, and next trip will be to Cali
I enjoy your videos and they are very helpful. I do travel quite a bit. I just ordered an underseat bag from Amazon. I have been using a messenger bag, and I'm thinking this new bag will be more versatile. I'll be leaving for Da Nang, Vietnam in October, then on to Thailand for the rest of the winter. Thank for your helpful videos, well done!
100% on the change of clothes. I had someone lose their lunch next to me and it splattered on my sweatshirt. After we landed, I changed my sweatshirt and cleaned up. Done.
Flying into Hamilton ON from Winnipeg sometimes hopefully on Swoop next week ! Keep u guys updated on this ! When I visited my cousin at Washington DC she and her husband took me to the mall thankfully they helped me pick the TSA approved mini shampoos ! I rather apply for NeXUS / global entry to minimize the hassels! 😂
I'm flying to London. I have a small carryon. (The personal bag is inside the carryon until I get through TSA) The books I'm currently rereading are the Kate Shugak series by Dana Stabenow. (There are 24 books)
I think it's wonderful that you decided to surprise your parents. My dad was going to be 81 in June but he passed away in February. You always think you have all the time in the world and the truth is you just never know. Cherish the time you have together and make every moment count. Enjoy your trip and make some fantastic memories with your parents.
Thanks you so much! I will! My condolences on the loss of your dad.
7:58 Love this so much! Take every opportunity life throws at you. We lost my mom very suddenly when we expected her to live many more years. Life is unpredictable. Take the trip together, answer the call, say I love you. Every time.
Hope your time with your parents is unforgettable! ❤
So glad I watched till the end! That fantastic that you’re surprising your parents in Portugal! Hope you guys have a blast, Megan!
I have no use for them otherwise, but they are still well worth it.
at $350 forget that
Lol

3 extra things i always bring
1: large beanie - great buffer for my head from plane surfaces/ hotels & hostels pillows, large enough to pull down & cover my eyes so blocks light, also great for bad hair day.
2. Microsoft surface duo phone- an affordable 2020 foldable phone which is triple functional as a backup phone, media player, & e-reader in compact form instead of just an e-reader
3. Tiny first aid kit- better to have it & not need it than need it & not have it. Includes various size bandages, wipes, tweezers, latex gloves and nail clip. I just attach to my bag with a carabiner so doesnt take up space
Thanks for sharing that! All great items to have.
Nail clippers n tweezers are generally not allowed as they are sharp n could be used to cause injury. But bandages etc are a good point
@@ThinkDreamBecome maybe that's the case but the ones in the bag have yet to cause an issue with TSA
@@ThinkDreamBecomeNail clippers and tweezers are allowed. Even in international airports that took my tiny scissors the clippers and tweezers were ok.
I also add antibiotic ointment in little packs-don’t count as liquids.

Lisbon, and Portugal in general is beyond beautiful.

I just got back from Thailand and I want to say thank you for all your tips Megan
You are so welcome! I love Thailand!
I'm flying to Israel in November from Lax my first long haul flight ✈️
Hope you found this video helpful! Have a great trip!
I did thank you 😊
I carry all of the items you mentioned + sport towel especially when your destination is a lot more humid than your departure contury.
Sounds like you’re well prepared! Happy travels!

I hope the surprise went well and you had a fun time with your parents.

Amsterdam. Love the Finlay Donovan Is Killing It Series
Have a great trip!
Great surprise idea! We are flying to Portugal Friday! Thanks for the tips!
Wow! Portugal is very popular right now. Thanks for watching, Dan.
You are just adorable! I'm a seasoned traveler, but I always find it helpful to find extra tips! Thanks!
You are so welcome! Glad it was helpful!
What a wonderful surprise! Enjoy every moment and I hope you will share a word about it once you have returned home.
Thank you, Andrea!
Awesome surprise for your parents! I'm sure they'll be thrilled!
It was! We had a great time!
I will be heading to Copenhagen in a few weeks. These tips were so helpful!
Glad you liked them! Safe travels!
More great tips Megan. I keep all the tips from your videos in the notes on my phone. You’ve saved me so much time. Thx‼️🍀

We are off to Holland the day after tomorrow. I've been many other places but it is my first time to Europe. I appreciate the tips!

Have fun! Greetings from the Netherlands 😊
Very cool surprise trip! Enjoy the time with your parents!
Thanks so much!
I just wanted to say, I love your travel videos
Aww! Have fun with your parents!! ❤️❤️
Thanks! Always a good time with them.
Have a wonderful trip, Sarah!
Traveling to Munich in July. Last couple of long haul flights were so noisy I’ve decided to get the noise-canceling headphones for sure.
They are a game changer! Enjoy your flight!
Great tips! Thank you! Let us know how your surprise went. That’s so sweet ❤️
Washington DC this summer! Great ideas and video. I hope you have a wonderful adventure with your parents. ❤
Thanks so much, Tammy! Enjoy your time in Washington!
Very helpful. Thank you
You are so welcome, Ted.
I never leave home without an emery board - because I always break a nail at some point, and it drives me crazy.
I am in total agreement with you on that one!
I will be flying into Christchurch, New Zealand, for my 4th visit to NZ's south island in September! Visiting my cousin and his wife is the primary reason for the trip while a side trip to Doubtful Sound and Queenstown are options that seem likely!!
That sounds like a wonderful trip, Patrick. Enjoy!
Any tips on traveling with camera equipment?? I've heard horror stories 😬
Thanks for watching!
Thanks Megan for the tips, I’m heading to Barcelona, London and Dublin shortly so I took notes of a couple of them, really appreciated.
I hope you’re having a nice time in Portugal and you gave your parents a nice surprise 😜 remember to use sun protection!
Never leave home without the sun protection! Thanks for watching and enjoy your trip!
Collapsible cup is also a good idea to bring that way hot and cold liquids can be used in it..
Another great option!
Thank you for your vids!
I'm enjoying being subscribed.

Your travel tips are becoming very useful.
So glad you find it helpful! Great to have you on the channel, Amanda!
The next country I’m flying too is London, at the end of the year. I’m so excited (I’ve start a London 2023/24 TH-cam series.)
Singapore in July. Best advice today: pack a change of clothes. I had a guy vomit on me during a 14 hour flight.
That is so sweet. I hope you have a wonderful time. If time and budget permits take the train to Porto.
Thanks! I hear Porto is beautiful!
I'm super Excited, we are traveling to Portugal in April!
That is exciting! That is when I was there last year and loved it! Have a great trip!
My next flight is Las Vegas to Amsterdam, via Heathrow. I picked a five hour layover, to insure my baggage makes the connection (it didn't last year.. but it was on the return trip).
The last book I read was "No Time for Goodbye" by Lindsay Barclay.
Thanks for watching, Jeffery. Have a great trip and hope your luggage arrives with you!
Rome in 14 days exactly. Can't wait. Great video
Glad you liked it! Have a wonderful time exploring Rome!
I agree! It is my favorite bag also! So practical! Happy travels!
Which brand is this? I love it too! Would love to purchase. Thanks in advance for the info.
@@IvankaB Nordace is the brand
I read and really enjoyed The Nightingale.
Done.
Not a nice situation but you were prepared!!
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is a must-read. So is A Thousand Splendid Suns. I recommend these books to everyone. A close 3rd is Shantaram.
I traveled with my noise cancellation headphones and they help me a lot . Great video
Great to hear! Thanks!
Great to hear from you, Adam! Enjoy Canada!
Have a wonderful trip! My next flight is to Zurich in a few short weeks!! Great tips here!!❤
Thank you, Sabine! Have a great time in Zurich!
I'm going to Italy in September on my first international flight. Thanks for all the information. Enjoy your time in Portugal with your parents. Linda
I hope the surprise went well. Have a good holiday
I'm flying to Bangkok on Monday and this video really helped thank you
That's great! Have a super trip!
The last book I read was "The Apollo Murders" by Canadian astronaut (and CF18 pilot) Chris Hadfield. (I HIGHLY recommend it!)
Thanks for the recommendation!
The life of Pi is a beautifully written book and is perfect for a long flight
I'm flying to London. I have a small carryon. (The personal bag is inside the carryon until I get through TSA)
The books I'm currently rereading are the Kate Shugak series by Dana Stabenow. (There are 24 books)
Sounds like you are well prepared! Happy travels, Abigail!
Next flight: Republic of Ireland
Book recommendation: Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus
❤
I will certainly check out that book. Thanks and enjoy Ireland!
Safe trip to see your parents. I know they will love it.
