£20k, plus tax on imported cars into the uk - £42k... plus VAT...circa £50k to buy. Why do all cars in the UK cost so much more than in other countries?!
Screen obsolete? Software stop working? That's not how any of that works. Go turn on a TV or phone from 10years ago... yes, it's fine. It just need an input. Software may cease to get updated, but it will still perform the functions built into it. Outdated and obsolete aren't the same. If the hardware breaks, it breaks, but it's not just gonna stop working because of time. It can be outdated, and connectivity may get discontinued, but the thought of "throwing it away" after 5 years is dumb. Now the privacy and viability of this product is a different story.
He might be thinking of how lots of company's intentionally "brick" older electronics with updates. I literally stopped buying tablets for that reason.
I'd be more worried about replacement costs. A custom made 48" screen for a specific car model is not going to be cheap to replace, especially if it's not just a screen but a module with all sorts of hardware built in. It only takes an unfortunate bump, or even a few unfortunate dead pixels, to require a swap. If you had two smaller screens and physical buttons the cost would be much lower. Honestly, that could be more expensive to change than the battery.
If it's still running the original software, maybe... but as we've seen with e.g. mobiles, more and more features etc get added over the years as 'free' updates - resulting in first-gen hardware slowing down to the point of being unusable... and not every company provides a way to uninstall those updates, or roll back to an earlier (faster) version, etc.

Given some people think the batteries are thrown away after 3 years a comment like that is really not smart and encourages the "car no good after a year" lot
I took it to be that you won't be able to get a replacement screen when it breaks if it is bespoke for this model. And the whole car depends on the screen so if it went kaput and couldn't be replaced the car wouldn't work any more.

I would worry about two things: software security updates (wouldn't want to drive around a botnets spreading virii), and the fact that that screen has about 10 times more pixels than that old laptop, so 10 time more likely to get a dead pixel. Also:if it's OLED (don't remember if he mentioned the tech) it will lose brightness and get burn-in. If it's a normal LCD then I hope its backlight is well engineered, because modern TVs are usually blotchy after 5 years.
If I want to see a screen, I'll sit and watch my TV or go on my computer. In a car, I just want the info I need for driving and that's it. A few analogue dials should do it.
Some people prefer the info on a screen. The screen will offer the option to have GPS and different camera around the car. Honestly, when it comes to fully utilising all the functions, more screens the better.

@@netrox1345 Putting all of the controls in a screen doesn't necessarily make it safer. Side mirrors, signalling stalks, AC vents etc.. should be adjustable without going through menus, there's such a thing as being too minimalistic.

Look at the BMW and Mercedes aftermarket, complete screen replacements with better resolution _and_ more features, while retaining OEM controls. Saying you might have to junk a car in 5-10 years due to screens/software is nonsense.

@@oddjobsandrandomprojectsYup. It wont come here because of anticompetitive legislation that the Big Three think will protect them from having to actually be competitive. Chinese companies are building factories in Mexico, so now legislators are pushing the same "fear factor" narrative with Chinese EVs they use with Chinese cell phone manufacturers that prevents us from having cheap smart phones in the US. Really its all just American manufacturers shooting themselves in the foot. We had a chance 15 years ago to be the leaders in EVs, but we let China take it. Really just pathetic.
@@truebrit3670 a lot of people forget that the Chinese government subsidize evs sold locally to help get people off diesel and petrol, that reflects the low retail price there. In the UK etc the opposite applies apparently.
Thank you, Elliot, for showing us the new Geely Galaxy E8... I thoroughly enjoyed your video presentation. Amazing and fun to watch. And about that screen possibly becoming obsolete in like 5 years or less, you are quite right. We can't change NEVs, the way we change phones every so many years... It'd be quite an expensive proposition.
Before complaining about Chinese cars being more expensive in the EU, think about what Ms von der Leyen said: "Chinese electric car price is kept artificially low"
Speaking as someone whose Hyundai i20 touchscreen has stopped working, I sympathise with the worry about that huge E8 screen. How do you get them fixed?
I need: a speedometer, a battery meter with a rough distance estimate, an odometer, and a place to put my phone so it's visible and accessible. Everything else is just more stuff that can break. I'm not opposed to safety driver aids, as long as they stay quiet and out of my way unless I actually do something stupid.
I am getting really tired of these interiors. Bring back buttons and knobs and some colour that's not mostly black, grey and white. I remember when cars used to be a inviting space rather than a liminal space.
I may be old fashioned but I prefer the analogue approach with dial controls. As you say what happens when all these fancy screens go out of date plus they can be too distracting.
One of the main advantages of a screen is that the interface and controls can be expanded and modified over time. The Tesla user interface has had a number of additions and revisions which add features to the car that didn't exist when I bought it! If the dashboard consisted of fixed switches you wouldn't be able to do this. There's therefore less chance of a screen going "out of date" than a traditional dashboard control layout.
Sad that this won't come to canada cause we don't want competition for our overpriced evs. Wouldn't mind them coming here for around the same price as whats already here thus keeping competition alive. They can come and take over the market anytime since they are not big trucks or SUVs that are selling right now
You can add at least 25% to the price if it comes to the UK. Look at the ORA prices elsewhere compared to the UK. I have an MG ZS EV and appreciate the chinese cars, but the depreciation means, I won't be able to change it for a new EV without taking a huge hit. If they can do it for £20,000 then taking the hit is made a bit sweeter.
I think this car is going to be taxed and fee´d and then you can buy it for 30.000 Euros in Europe ... that still would be a fantastic price for such a decent sedan with lots of horsepower and nice interior !!! I would definatly buy one when available for under 25.000 Euros in Germany.
It seems impossible that they can profit from selling this for £19k less taxes!!! - Add a max of 25% for UK sales and it will be a runaway success! - Huge battery, range, size and performance for 'peanuts!'
This won't be sold for that price in Europe. You cannot take the Chinese market price and just convert it to European prices. You need to add penalty tax, sales tax, transport, type registration and local adjustments to the price and maybe even more stuff. The price will then be more like 40-50K €.
To all the people debunking the screen bit: He kind of has a point, in 5-10 years will Geely be making these screens anymore? If this is a one off kind of part for a car, they won't be very available. Imagine if those 3D, curved TVs of 10 years ago were a key component of a car, they don't make them anymore, they can't be replaced. If this screen bakes in the Brisbane/Sydney sun for 5 years is it going to last that long? Heck even the buttons/screens in my Skoda from 9 years ago are extremely expensive to replace with genuine parts. Imagine what this widescreen will be!
Hopefully, their software will be updated so that ALL of their models use the same (easier to maintain 1 software for all than 1 per model). I don't see the use for such a big screen. A lot of it is hidden behind the wheel so you'd have to move your head to see.
I hope grandad does not go for the sub 3.5 second version. I watched this and for the first time in a while I see a car I want, even with all the potential future unknowns like the screen. (Its like the engine noise in the Ionic 5N, it is childish but I like it.) Have to see it in the flesh. Agreed with everything you said. Thanks Wing Commander ~Richards. DES
I was about to write that I would like do see a 8 to 10 year test of this car when Elliot questioned himself about the durability/reliabity of all the tech 😁
Drove an Oldsmobile Trofeo with one of the first computer screens... Sure it's an obsolete computer by today's standards, but the instant mpg and engine data displayed in real time is still not as useful as a car gas pedal and brake. Put the big screen distractions in the house and live a lot longer.
With EVs, it's allllll about the platform and software. And sharing those to create scale to reduce costs or maximise profits depending on your point of view. The car itself is a tad generic apart from the bonkers screen. But the same comment about that could easily be made about the one(s) in the top end Mercedes after all. It's a thing the modern world needs to get to grips with.
My first thought on that screen was, how much to replace it? Three standard size screens might not impress in the same way, but would be much more sustainable. A very impressive car - Apple could have just paid one of these Chinese manufacturers to produce their car.
is in some years the screen dont work anymore you go and replace the screen with a new one. kinda same as with buttons.. 🤨🤔 what if the CPU running this thing is broken i hear you say? well you replace the CPU and reinstall´the system. isnt that hard. i am driving a car with 2 massive screens for 3 years now. no reason to think why that suddenly would make my car undrivable
I heard a colleague last week, he replaced the screen on his son's ipad. It cost him 11€for the spare part alone.... Its absolutely mind boggling, everything gets more expensive, but tech keeps getting cheaper....
there si a video of a guy driving a tesla model 3 and while driving he smashes the screen to pieces with a hammer. oyu can still operate the car completely.
Great review, I can’t wait to purchase an EV & a Chinese model will be no doubt what we go for! The only thing I don’t get with the Chinese automakers don’t seem to cater to the useable hatch back vehicles 🚗. Not too sure about the rest of the world but Hatch backs have been the most popular vehicle type for Australia/NZ, other than utes.
Thank goodness all this investment is going into a scalable transport solution that is good for the environment and has minimal impact on the design of cities
You cannot be more wrong stating "buttons can be replaced and the screen thrown away". The screen displays what system tell it to so it will be relevant for many years. Buttons are sometimes wired to individual functions.
I was in this car not long ago, the rear seats were designed for kids below 10years old. Astonishingly limited room for the support of legs, too high the floor was. That makes an immediate pass.😂
There really should be a requirement for all control interfaces in vehicles meant for public roads to be open source, both hardware and software, and ideally compliant with some set of common standards (again, both hardware and software). That's really the only way you can resolve the issue you mention about the control displays going obsolete before the car does.
Yes, if all the settings/controls are only available via the screen what happens 5-10 years later when it breaks? Can it be replaced? Will the UI burn-in? Will the heat warp/crack it?
looks amazing not sure if it'll still be that price when it makes it here but I still prefer my mid suv size vehicle, there's not much point having a huge boot when the aperture is so small

Yes. I hate all the touch screens and no real buttons.
I want screen.
thats just your opinion and that shows you are old enough but even then screens are better then monologs and sometimes safer as a matter of fact but ok keep driving a monolog car thats less safer then a smart car that can literally save your life. in case you dont know what im talking about you will see in the near future(if you still live then) what im talking about

Putting all of the controls in a screen doesn't necessarily make it safer. Side mirrors, signalling stalks, AC vents etc.. should be adjustable without going through menus, there's such a thing as being too minimalistic.
This is a beautiful dream. Very pleasant even to look at. I wouldn't feel bored at the back seat.
Elliot. You did not do the usual sign off. Did not know I had reaced the end of the video until it just stopped. Hope to see you in Sydney next year, hopefully with that lovely car.
If this thing goes on sale in the UK for anywhere close to £20k, I'll eat my trousers.
Your trousers are safe😂
That interior is amazing for any car, let alone one that costs 20k. Great to know Geely is planning to enter Australia market this year!
5:55 That's where the aftermarket steps in. You can get CarPlay, for example, for cars built in the 2000's and 2010's. Look at the BMW and Mercedes aftermarket, complete screen replacements with better resolution _and_ more features, while retaining OEM controls. Saying you might have to junk a car in 5-10 years due to screens/software is nonsense.
£40k+ when/if it reaches the UK
Yeah you are not allowed nice things. Its part of the Brexit deal, even if its not from the EU you cant have it if its nice. Part of the dikensification of Britain
@@oddjobsandrandomprojects That's what I am sitting here thinking, "Never in the US"
@@oddjobsandrandomprojectsYup.
AFAIK A single shipment has about 4500 cars, and the U.K. applies less than 5% tariff on China.
Where would the 100%+ markup be generated?
@@truebrit3670 a lot of people forget that the Chinese government subsidize evs sold locally to help get people off diesel and petrol, that reflects the low retail price there. In the UK etc the opposite applies apparently.
The amount of construction in the background mind boggling 😨😱😳😊😍
First thought was: huge, electric Citroen
Thank you, Elliot, for showing us the new Geely Galaxy E8... I thoroughly enjoyed your video presentation. Amazing and fun to watch. And about that screen possibly becoming obsolete in like 5 years or less, you are quite right. We can't change NEVs, the way we change phones every so many years... It'd be quite an expensive proposition.
I'm a big fan of how it slips through the air... much more focus needs to be on that
This is your funniest review EVER Elliott; crumpets, you in the boot, you closing the frunk😂...
Love to see a review of the new Xiaomi EV. 😊
I love it. If it's priced under £40k then it's well worth it.
Omg that intro sound made me look around thinking a large fly passed by my ears! 😅
Yes, I'm on headphones...
Strange Yello vibes.
"This car will be going overseas very soon" = yes, but definitely not before the 38%+ protectionism, I mean import tariff hikes they're planning 🤔
Yeah
Still better
Nice car let me know if you need a test driver when you bring it to the UK.
Crumpets and chill made me spit my tea out.
I need: a speedometer, a battery meter with a rough distance estimate, an odometer, and a place to put my phone so it's visible and accessible. Everything else is just more stuff that can break.
I'm not opposed to safety driver aids, as long as they stay quiet and out of my way unless I actually do something stupid.
looks great I'll have one
If this car was sold in usa for 20k as shown every American would have 2 .
I am getting really tired of these interiors. Bring back buttons and knobs and some colour that's not mostly black, grey and white. I remember when cars used to be a inviting space rather than a liminal space.
Ford's lawyers will love the Galaxy name
It's in a different category like a Samsung Galaxy so it's not an issue. Geely make cars, Ford make jokes, not the same at all.
Ha.. when grand dad hops over to Mabel's for some crumpets and a quickie, he can do it in style.
Hatchbacks are always better I think
Hatchbacks are more practical, you just won't get 0.19 Cd value, you would get less range.
Just replace it when you need too NOT when you want to, it's worked really well for me.
This car won’t go for less than £45k in the UK. It will probably go for more.
Excellent work again Elliot 👏
Looks great, i can see some BYD seal in the front and perhaps some MG4 in there too.
Love the design and the screen
A LCD touch screen is just a screen/monitor. When did you last worry about your monitor being obsolete?
The front camera literally serves as the bumper. Push a shopping cart, and you'll need to replace your camera. Uhh...........
Elliott smashing it out of the funny park😂
China's progress is formidable.
That screen that screen ❤
I’ve just had my central screen replaced on my 9.5 year old Tesla Model S to bring it more up to date. Hopefully Geely will provide the same service.
A big iPad with wheels attached on it ,so if comes to Europe make sure define it as a electronic device to reduce tariffs
Brillant E8 under the same group as Volvo, polestar, Zeekr..+ others.. 😊 the Zeekr 007 is the other sedan worth considering 😊
And Geely is doing great job love their Polestar brand
To all the people debunking the screen bit: He kind of has a point, in 5-10 years will Geely be making these screens anymore? If this is a one off kind of part for a car, they won't be very available. Imagine if those 3D, curved TVs of 10 years ago were a key component of a car, they don't make them anymore, they can't be replaced. If this screen bakes in the Brisbane/Sydney sun for 5 years is it going to last that long? Heck even the buttons/screens in my Skoda from 9 years ago are extremely expensive to replace with genuine parts. Imagine what this widescreen will be!
Don't pretend that this is going to be £20k in the UK, that is just absolute bull ***t
China car NOT allowed to sell cheap in Europe.
OR will be ban/tax higher
That's a uk thing
Wow this is fantastic!

People talking about how much it costs to buy a car, come to Australia, where the average car costs 50-70% more than every other country.
Screens last forever, and if it’s 8k, it’s not an issue for well over 10 years.
I was about to write that I would like do see a 8 to 10 year test of this car when Elliot questioned himself about the durability/reliabity of all the tech 😁
That upside down pants building in the background got all my attentions
Over the years,I have tossed two premium washing machines away because the screen replacement cost as much as a new machine!
You need to tell us the charging speeds !
Slow
Drove an Oldsmobile Trofeo with one of the first computer screens... Sure it's an obsolete computer by today's standards, but the instant mpg and engine data displayed in real time is still not as useful as a car gas pedal and brake. Put the big screen distractions in the house and live a lot longer.
Forget the car, where can I get the screen to just sit under my main monitors? All the weather and notifications I could ever want. :)
what if the CPU running this thing is broken i hear you say? well you replace the CPU and reinstall´the system. isnt that hard. i am driving a car with 2 massive screens for 3 years now. no reason to think why that suddenly would make my car undrivable
I like the fact that China automakers has no problem making EV sedans like the US automakers and don't tell me about what the numbers say.
Thank goodness all this investment is going into a scalable transport solution that is good for the environment and has minimal impact on the design of cities
That feeling when you reviewed this car 4 months ago and this video gets 5 times as many views in two days.
You cannot be more wrong stating "buttons can be replaced and the screen thrown away". The screen displays what system tell it to so it will be relevant for many years. Buttons are sometimes wired to individual functions.
Tesla screens fail all the time
05:09 - I know this experience from when I see 80085. So focused.
Since when did 20,000 pounds become easily affordable. sheesh
Sounds promising. This for not much more than £20k. Not sure it will be that but the tech is good!👍🤞
Nice one Elliott, another good video. Saloons do nothing for me. Hatchbacks and estate's are far more practical and in most cases better looking to.
Rob's Roast has some interesting comments about FCS blocking, and more.
Well it will cost twice as much in the UK but even at 38 Grand people will buy this. I won’t but I do think it’s pretty cool.
Yes, if all the settings/controls are only available via the screen what happens 5-10 years later when it breaks? Can it be replaced? Will the UI burn-in? Will the heat warp/crack it?
Cool Camry. Thanks Elliott.
Using mosquitos as background music is not a pleasant surprise. :)
you can always replace the screen in the future. software can be updated over the air
looks amazing not sure if it'll still be that price when it makes it here but I still prefer my mid suv size vehicle, there's not much point having a huge boot when the aperture is so small
If it's anything like BYD that £20k is gonna be more like £35k at least.
That whole granddad analogy completely went to pieces, didn’t it?
Grown men wearing woolly hats look ridiculous, by the way.
