I was in china last summer, the number of EV on the road is unimaginable, there are tons of tesla and many other domestic brands. It is crazy
If this makes it to the UK for £20k I will personally buy one, wear it as a hat and eat it.
😂
And it will eat your foolish down the drain.
@@JoeyBlogs007 Those are all words, just in no particular order.
More like north of €40k, with discount.
Yeah I hate when journalists do that. Oh it's "equivalent" to £20k.
Oh that's nice.
Now import it to my country and add all the import fees and taxes and sales taxes and dealer gouging and **then** tell me the price.
I've not seen a single vehicle make the trip and still be that price.
I was in China a couple of weeks back and the variety and quality of the EV's is astounding. I just wish they brought them to Australia
Especially the baojun cloud, I'd love one because it's well designed and not a wannabe SUV.
If can’t do , proton can use it
Actually Australia is already in a better position than other western nations such as Canada. The reason Teslas are at lowest price outside of China is because we have Chinese EVs competing in the market. Competition is always good for the consumer!
@@markuc I noticed that. Even here, South Africa has tons of Chinese cars nowadays (not EV's though, due to the electricity issues). It's a good thing, because they're just so much better made than the European stuff, but way, way less expensive.
@@markucAustralia western? What 😂
Screen obsolete? Software stop working?
That's not how any of that works.
Go turn on a TV or phone from 10years ago... yes, it's fine. It just need an input.
Software may cease to get updated, but it will still perform the functions built into it.
Outdated and obsolete aren't the same.
If the hardware breaks, it breaks, but it's not just gonna stop working because of time. It can be outdated, and connectivity may get discontinued, but the thought of "throwing it away" after 5 years is dumb.
Now the privacy and viability of this product is a different story.
He might be thinking of how lots of company's intentionally "brick" older electronics with updates. I literally stopped buying tablets for that reason.
I'd be more worried about replacement costs. A custom made 48" screen for a specific car model is not going to be cheap to replace, especially if it's not just a screen but a module with all sorts of hardware built in. It only takes an unfortunate bump, or even a few unfortunate dead pixels, to require a swap. If you had two smaller screens and physical buttons the cost would be much lower.
Honestly, that could be more expensive to change than the battery.
@@sebastiansandvik825 If that screen stops working at any point in time. Your car is toast Yes you may be able to replace it but at what cost?
If it's still running the original software, maybe... but as we've seen with e.g. mobiles, more and more features etc get added over the years as 'free' updates - resulting in first-gen hardware slowing down to the point of being unusable... and not every company provides a way to uninstall those updates, or roll back to an earlier (faster) version, etc.
@@logicalChimphopefully with Geely they'll be more into optimisations. Although having owner a number of Huawei devices, their cars should be super efficient and optimised.
Throw it all away in a couple years? What’s he on about 😂 OTA updates will keep it updated, if the screen needs replacing just replace the screen like you would a button/switch on a old car & you can always update the computer in the future if more power is needed for whatever reason… why’s he saying throw it all away in a couple years??
yeah that comment makes no sense, tesla is still somehow doing updates for its intel atom cars which is seriously old tech
Given some people think the batteries are thrown away after 3 years a comment like that is really not smart and encourages the "car no good after a year" lot
I took it to be that you won't be able to get a replacement screen when it breaks if it is bespoke for this model. And the whole car depends on the screen so if it went kaput and couldn't be replaced the car wouldn't work any more.
I wonder why he still review cars.. He should go back to the UK. Get himself a jaguar..
@@dougbamford took whatever nonsense you believe.. All screens in your goddamn european brands are either made in china, korea and japan..
£20k, plus tax on imported cars into the uk - £42k... plus VAT...circa £50k to buy. Why do all cars in the UK cost so much more than in other countries?!
Rip off UK!
Try Ireland
They want your money...nothing more
Australia is so much friendlier 😢
Try Denmark :)
The price is unbelievable, even for Chinese standards!
"Crumpets and... chill" - thanks for the visual...
Crumpet and old crumpet?
All I took from that was £20,000 and Slippery Grandfather.
So true.. He failed to mention the powerful chip in that car and screen made by Meizu like huawei but belongs to Geely..
Those were definitely the key takeaways for us too.
It's a big screen with a car attached.
Cool. cars are dull
😂😂😂😂😂
A wiiiidee screen...
i remember when they said this about phones
It's a knob with a human attached 😂
Remembering that geely its a volvo owner.
And Lotus.
And the London taxis co
And they also own 50% of Smart.
They also have like 8 brands that haven’t made it to Europe yet
geely even owned benz
"this car is going overseas later this year"
later this year in Europe: Geely Galaxy E8 for 40.000 Euros...
yeah... Chinese manufacturers milking the ev cow in Europe 😢
@@freddykrueger79 Shipping costs, brokerage fees, operational costs to operate in Europe for sale, service and maintenance, supply chains for parts etc. Most people are clueless and stupid, believing that everything is free. None of that even mentions tariffs the European Union will likely levy on these vehicles which may be the biggest part of the price increase for the consumer. So prices in domestic Chinese markets will for obvious reasons not be equal to European MSRPs. Even Tesla's are cheapest in China (Not the US) where the EV supply chains are hyper-optimized and price competitiveness is king.
@@Ilost11 I perfectly understand price must be different... but in some cases it's way too much difference. example byd han in china 28keur... in Europe 73keur... that is almost 300%... at the moment Chinese made cars pay in EU 10% import duty.
@@freddykrueger79 Chinese tax-rate is ~3% for EVs, I think... compared to ~20%-25% tax in the EU?... and that gets added *on top* of all the other factors listed by ILost11... yes, there's probably some profit-inflation too, but not nearly as much as people think - and the only reason the CHinese companies can do that is because all the legacy Automakers are doing the same thing, in order to discount their prices in China (which is why e.g. the VW ID.4 is ~1/2 price - or less - in China, compared to the EU... and VW don't even have to ship their vehicles in from China - they're made in the EU to begin with)
@@freddykrueger79 China car NOT allowed to sell cheap in Europe.
OR will be ban/tax higher
sometimes when you see something and think....so simple...why has it not always been like that forever.....tinted perspex sunvisors, does its job without any vision block at all
I was an over the road trucker in the 70s. You could buy the clip on tinted extended visor. It's an old idea that just went out of style.
Maybe somebody out there knows where to find them. I'll buy one again!
With regard with your issue regarding the longlivity of the screen my 40 plus years experience with computers and monitors, partcularly with flat screens (OLED, LCD etc) is they are very hard to kill. Honestly they seem to function forever, I have living proof of that with the surplus monitors I have in my home. They are just "too good to throw out".
I've still got a gen 1 iPad, it's nearly useless apart from as an artistic piece but the screen is still fine.
@@metricstormtrooperI have an iPad air that's still useful but not as useful if apple supported it still. It's has good specs which is a shame.
I also have an iPad 3 which I use for a smart home panel. Doesn't need to do much.
Correct ... I've got several old laptops starting from 1995 ... a flat screen Apple monitor that's 20 years old ... all the screens work as good as they did when new.
£40k+ when/if it reaches the UK
Yeah you are not allowed nice things. Its part of the Brexit deal, even if its not from the EU you cant have it if its nice. Part of the dikensification of Britain
Here in the US they just won't allow it if it's good, especially if it is competitively priced.
@@oddjobsandrandomprojects That's what I am sitting here thinking, "Never in the US"
@@oddjobsandrandomprojectsYup. It wont come here because of anticompetitive legislation that the Big Three think will protect them from having to actually be competitive. Chinese companies are building factories in Mexico, so now legislators are pushing the same "fear factor" narrative with Chinese EVs they use with Chinese cell phone manufacturers that prevents us from having cheap smart phones in the US. Really its all just American manufacturers shooting themselves in the foot. We had a chance 15 years ago to be the leaders in EVs, but we let China take it. Really just pathetic.
AFAIK A single shipment has about 4500 cars, and the U.K. applies less than 5% tariff on China.
Where would the 100%+ markup be generated?
If this thing goes on sale in the UK for anywhere close to £20k, I'll eat my trousers.
Your trousers are safe😂
Screens are only distracting if you are someone who is easily distracted lol. I have a honda e thats got 2 massive screens, a sepoed screen, 2 screens for the wing mirror cameras and also rear view mirror is a screen
Not distracting infact what is more distracting is passengers and talking to them while driving...not screens because you aint looking at them when driving are you lol
Are the mirrors on the wings though? Door mirrors?
This is so true
@@dna9838 The Honda E has cameras and mini screens acting as door mirrors ... not actual mirrors.
@@MrAdopado good point. Door cameras, but certainly not 'wing', with almost all modern cars.
First thought was: huge, electric Citroen
At least they went and did the screen the way I'd like it. One large, continuous screen unlike the one that Mercedes did where they tried to pass like 3 screens as one by covering them with a long dark glass panel...
On the flip side, merc screens are each a 'standard' size, and probably a lot cheaper to replace individually than that single behemoth screen.
Yeah…. Have fun with regulations regarding media on the passenger display with that
You'd love the Cadillac escalade iq.... Perhaps not
What do you mean "when this screen becomes obsolete"? Elliot, all cars have screens, and huge ones at that. This one isn't going to stop working all of a sudden just because it's wide and futuristic. If you spoke about replacement costs after a serious accident, it would be a different story. But I don't really understand what you're getting at with what you said.
My 9 year old laptop must be a true miracle that it still works let alone is online.
@@Sparky400 Yep ... all my laptops that I have since the mid 1990s still have perfectly working screens!
While everyone its bringing crossovers to the market the chinese still believe on sedans. Love that, hope they bring it to Europe
Sure would be nice if a channel like this could lean on its many years of industry expertise and instead of clickbaiting the price of an exchange rate, instead give us an idea of an estimated UK price based on past trends.
That's easy to do. Just multiply by 2.
Because we all don't come from the UK thankfully.
That screen that screen ❤
looks great I'll have one
Speaking as someone whose Hyundai i20 touchscreen has stopped working, I sympathise with the worry about that huge E8 screen. How do you get them fixed?
Crumpets and chill made me spit my tea out.
Thank you, Elliot, for showing us the new Geely Galaxy E8... I thoroughly enjoyed your video presentation. Amazing and fun to watch. And about that screen possibly becoming obsolete in like 5 years or less, you are quite right. We can't change NEVs, the way we change phones every so many years... It'd be quite an expensive proposition.
This is your funniest review EVER Elliott; crumpets, you in the boot, you closing the frunk😂...
5:55 That's where the aftermarket steps in. You can get CarPlay, for example, for cars built in the 2000's and 2010's. Look at the BMW and Mercedes aftermarket, complete screen replacements with better resolution _and_ more features, while retaining OEM controls. Saying you might have to junk a car in 5-10 years due to screens/software is nonsense.
This is a beautiful dream. Very pleasant even to look at. I wouldn't feel bored at the back seat.
Elliot. You did not do the usual sign off. Did not know I had reaced the end of the video until it just stopped. Hope to see you in Sydney next year, hopefully with that lovely car.
very interesting, does it have V2G and how’s the regen?
I'm a big fan of how it slips through the air... much more focus needs to be on that
Citstion needed. Byd is behind Tesla again. Tjey were in front of sales for one quater and they are behind again. That one quater does not mean they have more market share or have made more cars.
Omg that intro sound made me look around thinking a large fly passed by my ears! 😅
Yes, I'm on headphones...
Strange Yello vibes.
Yes, if all the settings/controls are only available via the screen what happens 5-10 years later when it breaks? Can it be replaced? Will the UI burn-in? Will the heat warp/crack it?
That feeling when you reviewed this car 4 months ago and this video gets 5 times as many views in two days.
Great review. That A-pillar wheel arch line though. 😅
I was in this car not long ago, the rear seats were designed for kids below 10years old. Astonishingly limited room for the support of legs, too high the floor was. That makes an immediate pass.😂
Love to see a review of the new Xiaomi EV. 😊
How would it be if you needed any repairs, motors, but also body panels too?
China's progress is formidable.
A LCD touch screen is just a screen/monitor. When did you last worry about your monitor being obsolete?
That upside down pants building in the background got all my attentions
Rob's Roast has some interesting comments about FCS blocking, and more.
Not even the trunk closes properly , they are paying you but there are no miracles 😂
That interior is amazing for any car, let alone one that costs 20k. Great to know Geely is planning to enter Australia market this year!
It all sounds great... if only I could get that with the Polestar design language, and I'd get one immidiately.
Will probably be almost twice as expensive in Europe. The Zeekr 001 for example costs about 35k€ in China and 60k€ in Europe in base spec.
Cheers Elliot .🇬🇧
looks amazing not sure if it'll still be that price when it makes it here but I still prefer my mid suv size vehicle, there's not much point having a huge boot when the aperture is so small
Brillant E8 under the same group as Volvo, polestar, Zeekr..+ others.. 😊 the Zeekr 007 is the other sedan worth considering 😊
Very interesting the Highlander.😊
A big iPad with wheels attached on it ,so if comes to Europe make sure define it as a electronic device to reduce tariffs
Drove an Oldsmobile Trofeo with one of the first computer screens... Sure it's an obsolete computer by today's standards, but the instant mpg and engine data displayed in real time is still not as useful as a car gas pedal and brake. Put the big screen distractions in the house and live a lot longer.
05:09 - I know this experience from when I see 80085. So focused.
We all know in the UK what a price of $25k USD means when it arrives here, yep £40,000 if we're lucky
DEAR PRODUCERS
Could you PLEASE create a show or two covering V2* Capabilities ! Vehicle to Load is a BIG GOODY and so few know about it let alone understand what it can do. These Capabilities are a BIG Plus you can get from properly equipped EV's and can be a Godsend when "stuff happens" and you are without Grid Power.
Just wondering if the screen was smaller, the car could get cheaper? I don't think we need that size of screen.
Good try
That is crazy.
Cool Camry. Thanks Elliott.
Forget the car, where can I get the screen to just sit under my main monitors? All the weather and notifications I could ever want. :)
You need to tell us the charging speeds !
Slow
I think this car is going to be taxed and fee´d and then you can buy it for 30.000 Euros in Europe ... that still would be a fantastic price for such a decent sedan with lots of horsepower and nice interior !!! I would definatly buy one when available for under 25.000 Euros in Germany.
Would you be able to do a test drive of the Luxeed S7. It's got a lot of new tech on paper.
you can always replace the screen in the future. software can be updated over the air
Be real, we all want to put grandpa in the Tesla robocar😅 I would feel safer😂
Thank goodness all this investment is going into a scalable transport solution that is good for the environment and has minimal impact on the design of cities
Elliott smashing it out of the funny park😂
This grandads car has more HP (636!) than most Ferrari's. Faster accelerating too. It's going to be one of the fastest cars on the average road given the average car.
Hopefully, their software will be updated so that ALL of their models use the same (easier to maintain 1 software for all than 1 per model).
I don't see the use for such a big screen. A lot of it is hidden behind the wheel so you'd have to move your head to see.
Hatchbacks are always better I think
Hatchbacks are more practical, you just won't get 0.19 Cd value, you would get less range.
I’ve just had my central screen replaced on my 9.5 year old Tesla Model S to bring it more up to date. Hopefully Geely will provide the same service.
Excellent work again Elliot 👏
Looks great, i can see some BYD seal in the front and perhaps some MG4 in there too.
Love the design and the screen
I may be old fashioned but I prefer the analogue approach with dial controls. As you say what happens when all these fancy screens go out of date plus they can be too distracting.
One of the main advantages of a screen is that the interface and controls can be expanded and modified over time. The Tesla user interface has had a number of additions and revisions which add features to the car that didn't exist when I bought it! If the dashboard consisted of fixed switches you wouldn't be able to do this. There's therefore less chance of a screen going "out of date" than a traditional dashboard control layout.
Great review, I can’t wait to purchase an EV & a Chinese model will be no doubt what we go for! The only thing I don’t get with the Chinese automakers don’t seem to cater to the useable hatch back vehicles 🚗. Not too sure about the rest of the world but Hatch backs have been the most popular vehicle type for Australia/NZ, other than utes.
People talking about how much it costs to buy a car, come to Australia, where the average car costs 50-70% more than every other country.
I was about to write that I would like do see a 8 to 10 year test of this car when Elliot questioned himself about the durability/reliabity of all the tech 😁
And Geely is doing great job love their Polestar brand
that screen is awesome
A nice car for the money. I am going to test drive one. Software updates, just like in any car. Even replacing the screen will be easy enough. Why make this point about this particular car? It applies to all electric cars - and others.
White interior though? good luck keeping that looking clean in the real world...
Samsung Galaxy, Ford Galaxy and now Geely Galaxy E8. Galaxy family is growing up. Same price as Dacia. So prefer Geely Galaxy E8 to Dacia.
Looks at 2012 tesla. Oh look still suported. Still works. No warn out buttons.
Thanks
Nice one Elliott, another good video. Saloons do nothing for me. Hatchbacks and estate's are far more practical and in most cases better looking to.
Its because the have the economic of scale. I think Geely's is the among the one that heavily sharing its EV platform towards it's auto Group in a large scale for years. Now SEA platform has spawn more then 16 product from it was launch in 2021.
As an example, Ford only have 2 EV's with Mach E was a Cell to Pack in a heavily revise C2 platform while Lightning basically a Battery on frame platform.
GM have 9 cars under their Ultium platform but several cars sales just started in 2023. With its issues, we knew they are far away to reach economic of scale.
If it's anything like BYD that £20k is gonna be more like £35k at least.
The prices in Europe are generally double the Chinese price.
You can add at least 25% to the price if it comes to the UK. Look at the ORA prices elsewhere compared to the UK. I have an MG ZS EV and appreciate the chinese cars, but the depreciation means, I won't be able to change it for a new EV without taking a huge hit. If they can do it for £20,000 then taking the hit is made a bit sweeter.
Just replace it when you need too NOT when you want to, it's worked really well for me.
This car won’t go for less than £45k in the UK. It will probably go for more.
Wow this is fantastic!
Crumpets and chill sent me
With EVs, it's allllll about the platform and software. And sharing those to create scale to reduce costs or maximise profits depending on your point of view. The car itself is a tad generic apart from the bonkers screen. But the same comment about that could easily be made about the one(s) in the top end Mercedes after all. It's a thing the modern world needs to get to grips with.
Let’s speak software support!
To all the people debunking the screen bit: He kind of has a point, in 5-10 years will Geely be making these screens anymore? If this is a one off kind of part for a car, they won't be very available. Imagine if those 3D, curved TVs of 10 years ago were a key component of a car, they don't make them anymore, they can't be replaced. If this screen bakes in the Brisbane/Sydney sun for 5 years is it going to last that long? Heck even the buttons/screens in my Skoda from 9 years ago are extremely expensive to replace with genuine parts. Imagine what this widescreen will be!
It’s great that it’ll be sold internationally later this year.
Not for 20k though, I’m pretty sure.
You have to add shipping costs, service and the EU import tariffs, so half of your money will automatically go to your government.😂
That'd be $21,471.78 in the USA, where it will never see the light of day, unfortunately. I'd jump at the chance to own one,, but I'm an old person, so...
Excellent Point for all New Cars! Digital Junk everywhere 👍🏼
Where can i buy one
China
My first thought on that screen was, how much to replace it? Three standard size screens might not impress in the same way, but would be much more sustainable. A very impressive car - Apple could have just paid one of these Chinese manufacturers to produce their car.
why would the screen ever be obsolete? there is software updates for it and cars have screens for decades now. they're all still functional. i really don't understand this concern
