Submarine Tour - HMAS Ovens

  • Submarines have held a fascination for people of all ages, ever since men took to the seas in ships. As part of the Maritime Museum in Freemantle, Western Australia, the beached H.M.A.S. 'Ovens' forms a impressive exhibit. One of the now obsolete, 'Oberon' class of submarine, tours take place most days, Richard, our tour guide, takes us on, and into, this former member of the Australian Navy. It's sobering to feel the claustrophobic confines of the craft, and the utilitarian design of the fittings, which restrict your clear passage at every turn as you progress through the craft. As an ex-crew member said, "After a few days bumping into things, you get to know the projections instinctively, one tended to miss them then".

I served on Ovens 1975-1976, did the K2 exercise with the Yanks off the NE Qld in 1976, Terry Roach was the skipper of this boat back then. Brings back memories seeing this now, thanks for uploading it.

I went on a tour of this sub back in 2010 when I was in Australia for a months holiday from Ireland that ended up only being 3 weeks but what a great 3 weeks they were. Visited my cousin and sister in Australia too at the time. I have to say Perth is a beautiful city. I fell in love with it.

Perth is isolated within Australia but is a great city.

In 2001, I visited Australia to watch the V8 Touring Cars at Bathurst, NSW. We left Australia via Sydney and a memorable visit to the Marine Museum out there around the harbor somewhere - too long ago to remember now though. Two points of interest were the immigration lists from the early days. I was hoping to scope a relative but none were visible to me. Must have known about my visit.
However, the real treat, even more so than Bathurst, was visiting a Submarine alongside, or perhaps up on the Hard, who knows, but what an amazing experience to be inside a vessel from the Silent Service.
Of course, the Submarine was a conventionally powered diesel electric boat from the old, pre-nuclear days.
I am hoping that if the world opens up again to overseas travel, then one day I can return to The Great Southern Land and visit the Submarine permanently consigned to shore duties.

@@trevorpallant5726 Hello. My favourite boat was HMAS Orion. You would come home from a three month patrol, stinking of diesel, have a hot shower and by the time you finish a cup of tea you would stink of the diesel coming out of your skin. Yes it takes a special person to be the wife of a submariner. A big hello to all those that did not see us coming.

This is the only Australian O-boat I never got to go on. I was lucky enough to to go onboard the other 5 as a kid when they visited Hobart. Maybe a trip to WA is called for when we can travel again to finish off the 6! 😆

The boat I was on hosted the Ovens in Pearl Harbor for RIMPAC, and I got a tour. In the aft torpedo room there was nothing but cases of beer. No weapons. When asked about it, the reply was "it's not sporting to shoot at something you're running away from."

There a sad sight in Victoria, the HMAS Otama, another Oberon class sub, sits moored off shore at Crib Point rusting away. Eventually she will sink if she is not moved to shore & set up as a maritime museum like the Ovens has been. I flew around her recently & she is showing significant rust. 😢
